Intimidating debt collectors push Britons to suicide: report

Irresponsible lending and intimidating debt collectors are pushing thousands of people in Britain into depression and suicide, a report said on Wednesday and separate data showed more people are taking their own lives.

Many people already struggling with the economic slowdown, wage freezes and benefit cuts were often overwhelmed by tactics used by some money lenders, including persistent phone calls and threatening letters, said the paper.

"Debt clients frequently feel humiliated, disconnected and entrapped, with the process of debt collection having a clear impact on people's mental health," the report by researchers from England's University of Brighton said.

"The government must take urgent action to tackle the problem of irresponsible lending and intimidatory collection tactics which has left thousands of people trapped in a spiral of debt and at risk of depression and even suicide," it said.

Separately, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) released on Tuesday showed a "significant" rise in suicides in 2012.

The Brighton report, launched on Wednesday by British parliamentarian Molly Meacher, said there were cases of individuals not eating properly and asking their young children for money to tide them over.

One individual who owed money described the effect of his wife's credit card lapsing.

"I was very close to calling the doctor to her because she is that close to breaking because of ... these continual phone calls," the man was quoted as saying.

SIGNIFICANT RISE

The total number of suicides in the UK hit 6,045 in 2011, a 7.8 percent increase on 2010 with deaths among men accounting for the largest proportion, according to figures from the ONS.

I say this Caller is a right ferret of a company that keeps ringing my ex directory number looking for this 'Graeme Character'! My manservant has been disturbing afternoon tea on monday at half 3pm with there misguided calls! I have told them to take the house telephones number of their database/records as soon as possible.

They have been ring for around three years!

I have never seen anyone hound another person, apart from the hounds hunting the fox!

I have received  several call from this company for a person who used to have our phone number. I was able to call them on a national phone number rather than there premium rate one " If calling from a mobile or from within the Glasgow area, then the least expensive method is to call 0141 951 4077 "

Received a call from these people asking for the above name - yet I have had my number only 12 hours!
Also asking re owing electric bill and we are on pre-payment meters.

At the end of the day you are all f**king debt dodging tramps. Unemployed wastes of space. You all are the reason for inflation every year. The economy loses out because everybody pays more because we need to pay companies to cover the write off of your stinking debts. Get a f**kin life and a job . oh and don't forget to look after your 7 kids because if one goes missing you might get your benefits cut.

this number just rang my mobile. i dont answer to numbers not in my contacts so i let it ring. no voicemail left but on googling the number it lead me here. if they did get the right number and right person i would like to ask how the blazes i owe money on a prepaid metre. i CAN and WILL take photos of my damn metre and shove it down there effing throats if they ring me again

Ah PDCS again, dealt with these clowns last year, horrible company, put an official complaint in about their telephone manner, they were two debts from me owed to scottish power, to start with scottish power were paid direct for them both, then pdcs got involved it went down hill, spoke with a manager before xmas, got to say very nice bloke offered a good settlement for one of the debts and promised info regarding the second one for which i agreed a verbal plan to repay, i am still waiting for that info, the other debt was eventually a few weeks ago after two further letters to them asking again for paperwork, you cant pay a debt if you dont know about it, the second debt has been refered back to scottish power but i am still waiting for their response from january, two clown company working together.
I will answer their next call see how abusive they can get this time cos everyone has a spare couple of hundred quid in their account just to make an instant payment.

Oh dear I was sitting on the toilet when my phone rang and got some peter character from PDCS. Is this his company. I immediately pooped when he said I owed money.

I have been called twice by co. called pdcs , they have given case no. but I do not have any debts?

Yeah, those poor gas and electricity companies are really struggling at the moment - everybody must make more of a concerted effort to pay back what is owed to them, otherwise we'll be pushed back into the dark ages....where you seem to spend your life!

I owe loads of money, so I never know if their right, thing is, if you owe money do you want to pay off your debts or hide away. I want to regain my credit so I want to pay it all off over time, but when I don't have any money to pay well they have to wait, and if the keep calling me I answer and ask them to wait a sec while I put the phone in the draw and carry on playing warcraft.

This is a complete scam. They had to change their address because they were caught out. Just ignore them, it costs them to call/send letters etc. They will soon give up

Maybe you should consider paying your bills and not leaving it up to the rest of society. This country would be better off if we stopped paying your dole money and you starved to death along with your children. scum.
