Although I am X.Directory and have call barring this annoying firm still rang and left a message to a survey. Why are they not banned from making these calls?

Found this number on 1471 several times in the last few weeks. Am XD and very few people have the number. One possibility is that I recently bought a new washing machine from Currys and had to give them the no. for their delivery service. I wonder if they are passing info on to other companies as I am also receiving electrical product extended warranty proposals by mail.

these companies DO just dial numbers at random. If you press 9 then all you are doing is confirming that the phone number they have dialled is live and someone is receiving their calls which just means they are gonna keep calling you. Moaning that you are ex-directory or on TPS doesn't mean a thing to these morons - it's not as if they actually care about if what they are doing is legal or not. BT, the police nor Ofcom can do nothing about these guys (they really don't give a toss!) - all they do is change their numbers regularly so no-one can keep up with them! Just get caller id, save their number then don't answer their calls!

Received a call to our VoIP number, i.e. a number not in a normal geographical range, and known only to a couple of people plus my IAP. Since I trust all these, I conclude that CAG (an appropriately ugly acronym) are dialling at random.

The real blight of such calls is the cost they impose on us, one way or another – whether it's answering them (and cursing), going ex-directory (which is a nuisance to some callers we'd like to hear from), paying for Caller Display or more elaborate technical solutions....

We need better legislation – and regulators with teeth – so that we can publish our details openly without every Tom, Dick, and Diane interpreting this as a charter to pester us!

I received one of these phone calls and pressed 9 before I realised that I should not have done. I contacted BT who said I will probably have been billed for a £20 per moinute call, as a pensioner I am extremely worried about this.

    Allegedly a market research call.

Automated dialler and pre-recorded message wanting the called person to press buttons. This is an offence under "The Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003" : http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2003/2426/regulation/19/made

Note that you have to opt in to receive calls of this type.

When you get any kind of unsolicited call, refer to the entirety of the above legislation, rather than just the regulation listed

When you get calls like these do as i do. Tell them you have to put them on hold, place the phone next to the radio and leave it there for a while... they soon give up calling you.

I just had a message left on the answer phone, some one doing market research, press 9 to be removed from their database. Pressing 9 will put you on to a premium rate line, which is why the gaps are so long are reported by others on here. A call to BT should get this sorted as they are false information regarding removal from their database. Basically a SCAM.

These scum have started calling my number (on TPS) and got the usual automated survey left on my answer service :-

"Press 9 to opt out of further surveys"
    -
"Have you ever bought an item base on its energy rating?"
    -
    "No recognised responce, goodbye"

Later in the day or next day another call by these morons...

08450304400 is part of the Thus (part of Cable & Wireless) number range. You have to call Thus customer support on 08000270000 to get them to send on a message to the operator of the number. They will then ask the company that rents the 0845 number out-not the end user, to stop it. If you insist they will give you the operators name, then they can be found with a simple google search. The Company that rents the number out should be able to get you off the database in a day or so.
    Good luck.

I got the first of these today - fortunately I have a panansonic phone that allows you to block numbers, that will be the end of that. However I am writing emails to TPS and all the companies clients as the opt out does not work and opt out numbers shold be free.

Additional - never give out real phone numbers, even for credit card applications. We bought a cheapo throwaway mobile pay as you go phone we have it plugged in on silent and use that for all phone number entries on the web  - these days even cheapo mobile have number blocking facilities that are a lot better normal household phones :)

Just had one of these calls.  I didn't press any buttons and eventually the robot at the other end gave up.

We too are ex-directory and TPS registered, so I wanted to find out who had given them the number.  So
I rang the number back - but dialled 141 first so that my own number wouldn't be revealed.  I got a recorded message which began in the same way as the original call, but then said "Your telephone number appears to have been withheld.  Please key in your telephone number including the area code."

I did nothing.  The voice then said "I am sorry, that number appears to be incorrect"
