I have already posted on another page relating to HMRC numbers but I work for debt management and can assure you the 0845 302 1420, 0845 302 1424, 0845 302 1427 and 0845 302 1426 numbers ARE genuine.
0845 302 1420 - It is HMRC chasing up outstanding tax credit overpayments which are in direct recovery stages - meaning they are being recovered separately from your ongoing tax credit award (if there is one). The calls are made after 2 letters have been issued but there has been no response.
You wont believe me, but if you ignore the calls the case will automatically drop ont a worklist and the next correrspondence you will get is a letter from a local recovery office warning of legal proceedings.
Debt management is a different business stream within HMRC and further along the recovery route than the 0845 302 1429 number printed on the notice to pay letter. If any of you are ever transferred to what advisors may call 'head office' then that is debt management and so you may not be aware of the 0845 302 1420 number if they just put your call through.
HMRC DO call mobile phones (any number on record is called), DO leave answerphone messages and DO call on evenings and weekends when most people will be home.

Ignore this advice if you like. But if you know you owe something and have had letters concerning an overpayment you really need to sort it out. Call the number on your letters if necessary, arrange to repay and the phone calls WILL stop.

Same here, just had a 2 weeks ago and today again, but i missing the calls! however they are leaving messages on my answer machine asking for a person who has never even lived at my address!! whats that about. Something fishy about that, just leave it! if its genuine they will issue letters. Or contact your service provider and have the number blocked!! like i have.

Got a call about half an hour ago for my other half asking him to phone 0845 302 1420 and give his NIN urgently. The guy had a  west coast Scottish accent and sounded like a bit of a bully, he also sounds like he has been saying the same speel for days if not months on end! My advice after reading what is here, IGNORE IT. I have been contacted before about over and under payments of tax credits and it has always been by letter, on one occasion they contacted me via headed letter to asked me to contact them by phone which I did- so I know that this is what they do if they want you to phone them. Hope this helps someone.

Lucky I checked out the number and came up with this website. I've just had the Scottish guy on the phone asking to speak to my wife. Same story, from HMRC, wife to provide NI number and call back on 0845 302 1420. The guy rang from number 0845 300 3950 and called himself Mr. Nichol. Thankfully, my wife was out. I've seen the comments above re the number being a genuine HMRC department but frankly, they should know better than to ask for personal info over the phone.  If it's important and involves recovery of money, they will send a letter.

just had a phone call (missed the call) listened to answer phone msg was a woman with scottish acsent asking for a miss c ,v and then my surname...mine are infact miss s,v so she got that wrong!  asked me to call back on 08453021420 . she sounded very nervous and was unsure on what to say. she even stumbled when telling me what number to call back on and sounded like the was reading the whole thing out. ive had my letter from tax credits saying that any money owed has been payed back so i know for sure its not them!! if it really is them and its important im sure they would know my adress to write to!

Scottish lady left message on ansafone told me to call back before 21st sept, I tried calling back straight away but no answer, Typed the number into Google because it didn't look like tax credits number, and it came up with this review. So glad I couldn't get hold of them now.

My husband received a call saying an overpayment of £500 plus had been made re tax credits and this needed to be paid back immediately or we would be takin to court. The scottish guy asked my husband to confirm his NI No., address, DoB etc which he did and then continued to ask for immediate payment by debit card. He phoned me givin off about this, which I immediately checked the no. on line to find this website and realised it was a scam. I knew this cause I am actually due back dated tax credits and was about to give them hell for lookin £500 when they owed me triple that. So people BEWARE this is a scam!!!!

i was called several times but did not answer as i was at work they eventually left me a message saying it was revenue and customs and that i needed to call them by 8 pm the following day. i tried to call but got no answer. i looked up the number on line to check it was real and found out it is a con.

Had a message the same as everyone else. Scottish guy telling me to ring 08453021420. Rang it, and it has an answer machine message saying that it is Revenue and Customs-luckily I googled it and know it is rubbish.

Called asking for wife to return call regarding tax /tax credit issues. Its only because I wanted an alternative number that I would have thought it was a scam. Is there any way we could use the return call to trace them? send me an email gerrybeves@hotmail.com

As mentioned previously by Sarah this is not a scam. The 0845 302 1420 and 0845 302 1427 are both from HMRC debt management. the reason that NI number is asked for is due to security and the high risk of giving out the wrong information to the wrong people.

I understand people being wary about this but if you have a look on:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/workingtogether/priority-lines-list.htm (official hmrc site). You will see that the number is very similar to some of the numbers there. The reason the number isnt made public is because it is a debt management number and not a contact centre. If you look on any letters regarding a payment helpline number you will see this.

By ignoring the call you are only storing up more problems in the future.

I was given a message from a colleague at work to call this number claiming to be HM Customs and Revenue and saying I had to call back with my national insurance number. At first it's stressfull, and you want to call to find out if there is a problem, however thought I'd look online first, unfortunately the official HM Customs site's contact page is down and unloadable, so googled the number and hence found this site.
My question is, looking at the above posts, this scam has obviously been running since at least February, so why is nothing done about it? Why are these people still free to run this scam? Who should we contact to put a stop to it?
I've only had the one call so far, so am expecting more by the sound of it, so I'll certainly be letting them know what I think about them!

Its not a scam because if it was it would have been stopped by now. Read my above post to understand what i mean. If u ignore now you will only recieve a letter from your local debt collection ofice

Just had a message today to call this number & as above, scottish man asking me to call back very urgently before 8pm tomorrow night quoting my national insurance number. I called it back & heard the message like everyone above & quite frankly I'm glad I googled this too. I am not in any arrears with tax credits & I know that for sure, so why would they be calling me for arrears.

If you are in any kind of arrears they write to you & tell you how much & they automatically deduct what they pay you in the future, they dont call & make demands of payment as listed above.

I dont care what you other people are saying this sounds totally wrong to me & it hasnt been stopped yet because is to difficult to do so. Police have to prove they are doing wrong & if no-one gives them any info over the phone, theres no way they can be stopped as there're not doign anything wrong in the eyes of the law.

I too received an answer phone message on my work phone yesterday, at the same time an email which had a link to an official looking Inland Revenue page requesting my payment card detail and other personal information.I phoned the Inland Revenue on the correct number who confirmed that they had not rang me and they never send out email. I was told to forward the email and details about the phone call to: phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk

a)Ask if you have any overpayments - which you probably will do
b) Ask for the number of debt management telephone centre they will give 08453021420

yesterday had a call 5.33pm  left a message on answer phone asking me to call back urgently, quoting NI number, found this website!! shall not be phoning them back

got a call on sunday from woman with scottish accent claiming to be from revenue and customs and asking me to call 08453021420 before 8:00am monday if possible with my national insurance number as a reference.

I didnt call. I will check with Customs on monday, but judging from other commenst on this site..its a fake

Thanks guys for this thread, just got back from dropping kids from school. Scotish woman on answer machine, urgent for me both initials and surname to phone before 8pm tomorrow and give NI number-thought this was a little strange so googled number and got you guys-Big Thanks. I wonder if this is as a result of the missing child benfit files?!

This is a genuine number, following up letters which have previously been sent asking you to repay a tax credit overpayment. They may well ask you to pay directly rather than have it deducted from future payments if you have had a change in circumstances.
