It is definitely not a scam.........as I was hoping, as it turns out that it really is HM Revenue & Customs.  Take down the name & dept of the person that calls you and then call Tax Credits who can tell you if the caller is legitemate.  I asked them to verify part of my National Insurance no and also part of my address before I entered into conversation.  It was about a Tax Credit overpayment & so am pleased that I have now dealt with this to prevent further action.  I did also verify with Tax Credits the next morning and was absolutely correct.

Not a scam! Someone called me on this number out of office working hours and asked me to call back 08453021427 quoting my tax reference number. I did this a few minutes ago and it is Inland Revenue and Customs. They were quite helpful and they were calling me re a small amount I owed. I had paid it but they couldn't trace it. They checked again while I was on the phone and found it. It was received by them on 2nd Feb but not yet credited to my account.

I can assure you this is not a scam

OBVIOUSLY NOT A SCAM (Grow up and do some research before posting and stop wasting other people's time)

Just call the official HMRC Debt Management number on their letters (0845 302 1421) and they will tell you that 0845 302 1420 is part of their network of numbers. If you got this call, you probably owe the govt money. Simple.

I never write on these comments pages, but I just wasted half an hour on stupid, uninformed "This is definitely a scam" paranoia from this site.

Thanks go out to the sane ones who posted their reasoned, researched arguments as to why this is genuine. They are fighting against a tide of conspiracy nuts and fantasists.

But just remember, guys: Just because you're paranoid, it don't mean they're not after you...

Hi all, I am the same Vicky that posted the November 2009 comment. I went to great lengths to check if anyone at HMRC was trying to contact me-they were not. I also do not owe them any money. I have just missed another call exactly the same as the last one (3 months ago). The 'this is not a scam' and ' it's genuine and you are making things worse for yoursef' contributors answer me this, why in over 3 months have I recieved not one letter relating to HMRC regarding this very urgent matter on which they called? Exactly, this is a scam and unfortunately this site has been infiltrated by the scammers.

I have received a message, left on the answerphone, from the 'so called' revenue and customs, they asked me to ring them back on 0845 3021420 and give my NI number.  The majority of messages on here indicate it is a scam .... and I really cannot see why people, least of all employees of HMRC would bother to put messages on here to say its a genuine number ... the scammers however do have every reason to make people think its for real.   I shall not be calling to give any personal information and if they are real ... then they will surely send me a letter to let me know what it's about.

the reason you wouldnt have recieved a letter is due to large backlog of cases. As said before phone tax credits helpline and ask if you have any overpayments. If you recieved a call from this number 100% you will have had been overpaid.

Dont kid yourselves and believing what you want. If you really want to find out if its scam then phone tax credit helpline and find out. Otherwise you will just find out again in a year or so.

My son got this call yesterday for me to call 0845 302 1420 before 8pm. I called but wouldn't confirm any of my details and the lady hung up !!!  I called HMRC Tax Credits, girl said they were aware of some telephone and e-mails scams, but she couldn't help me.  I've not had any tax credits for years, as my son is now 24 years old, but I checked the last communication I got from them (like a yearly statement), there was no overpayment shown on it.  Not sure whats going on

i had a call on a sunday afternoon from this number too, reportedly from HM revenue & customs debt recovery, saying I owed nearly £1,000 and the bailiffs were coming round if I didn't pay straight away.  she asked me to confirm my address and other details and told me the debt was from previous years and they'd written demanding money but it must have been lost in the post.  she gave the numbers 0845 3900300 and 0845 3021420 and claimed to be Mrs Nicholls in the debt recovery unit at Washington, Tyne and Wear.

Evil B*****s.  Hope they don't get any money out of anyone.

"Be aware of this number as have been told by the genuine tax credits that this is a false agency claiming that they are a debt recovery service for tax credits"

I can assure you this number is not a false agency, this is the Tax Credit Overpayment Unit, part of Debt Managment & Banking. I work for the department and we do use this number (08453021420) and sometimes 08453021429 to recover Tax Credit Overpayments. It doesn't matter if you don't claim tax credits anymore or haven't in years, if we're phoning then theres a valid reason for it. The 08453003900/3050 number that is left on answer phones is from the automated dialling system we use. There is an automated msg on these numbers which will inform you HMRC has called.

Any info we have about you - Address/D.O.B/Phone Numbers are all details you have given when applying for Tax Credits/Self Assessment etc we can't get it any other way.

You'll probably not believe this and ignore advice but you'll know yourself if you have an underpayment/outstanding balance. Do yourself a favour and phone the numbers, we're always willing to help if you can't pay. The phone calls will stop if you sort it out!

Nicola, if this is the case, why when I have contacted the Revenue and customs via the recognised phone number, do they have no record of anyone contacting me and as I have no money owed to me neither do I owe any can give me no reason for the strange message I recieved!!! The member of staff I spoke to at HRC said she believed the messages to be a hoax!!
DO NOT GIVE ANY INFO TO ANYONE ON THIS NUMBER.... CHECK WITH HMC VIA THE RECOGNISED PHONE NUMBERS!!!
