Ring the number in the phone book for HM R&C's directly. I did, this 0845 3021420 number is NOT one of theirs.

You will just recieve more letters. As i said 08453003900 is Official number call and ask and you will how you all storing problems for yourselves.

If you ignore you will get letters in a few weeks.

My son got a call tonight re this phone number. They stated he owed £1500 odd. I found this site and started to tell him it was a scam. Got the number for Working Tax Credits people on the internet.He called the number. Turns out it was the wrong department, they gave him correct number. Got through to the correct department and they CONFIRMED what was said when he was asked to call 08453021420. So the number IS genuine, IS the number for Tax Credits people. Upshot is, they have sent two letters, none of which were received. My son is going to Citizen's Advice Bureau to get things sorted. He was claiming Tax Credits up until about two years ago, forgot the renewal, didn't apply again. Hopefully once things are sorted, the Tax Credit folks will be paying him, instead of the other way round.

I can definitely set the record straight on this one-once and for all. This is NOT a scam. I can confirm this 100% (wish it was cos it's just cost me money!! :(  )
Last night (Friday 27th Nov) I had a telephone message left from a man with a  Scottish accent saying he was from HM Revenue and Customs, asking me to call them urgently by 8pm Monday 30th November, on 0845 302 1420.
I googled the number and found this thread saying it was quite likely to be a scam, so I called the tax credits helpline and spoke to them. They had NO record of anyone having called me recently but I knew that I had previously been overpaid Tax credits but I had not heard anything about it since March 2008 so hadn't bothered to chase them. Clearly a mistake. Anyway, so I explained all of this to the lady on the tax credit helpline and she gave me another number to call to ask about it, which is 0845 302 1429. The number ending in 0 is also one of their numbers. Apparently they act as a separate department and any calls they make to you will NOT be recorded by the usual tax credits department you ring.
The call was definitely from them-they told me what date and time they had rung me and it was because I hadn't paid them back my overpayment, so it had gone to the recovery department. I have now set up a direct debit with them to pay them back. If I had ignored this call, the next step (after Monday) was going to be them taking action against me to recover their money. I said that why hadn't they put this writing and their response was that they had-in March 2008!!! I can't deny that because this is true and that was the last time I heard from them. I did contact them to query the overpayment at the time but didn't do anything else after that and as I didn't hear anything further from them, I forgot about it.
So all you people who have had a telephone call asking you to call on that number, it IS for real, i am very sorry to say. Please don't ignore it. Even if you call your usual tax credits helpline number and they don't have any record of them calling you, ask them for the recovery department number. Then you will find out this isn't a scam.
i really hope this helps someone avoid action being taken against them.

I received a call from a so called Mrs. McBride, HMRC in Glasgow. She said she had a matter to discuss with me but would need to know my NI number, full name, address, etc.  I said I was not willing to divulge this information on the phone not knowing who I was speaking to. She was sounding sympathetic and said she quite understood my views but that I was in a catch 22 situation. She told me to call her before 8pm the following day to discuss.  Numbers given were:  0845 302 1420 or 0845 300 3900.  Needless to say I will NOT be calling her.  I say beware of these types of calls and NEVER give out your details to people making such random calls!

Lot of rubbish talked on here, HMRC often phone people to collect money, this number is genuine, I have phoned the number on a HMRC statement re tax credits and they confirmed that this is a valid number. Backed up by the fact that they knew exactly my arrrears.

If you have an old arrears statement ring the number on that and check with them for your own peace of mind.

Had a messgae left by a lady saying calling from revenue and customs and to call back by 8pm tomorrow. Called the number and got very similar recorded messages as the real HMRC helpline but a different voice. Got put through and the lady was asking lots of dodgy questions, saying she was from tax credits overpayment. I told her I wanted to verify it and so I called the tax credits helpline number on HMRC website (0845 300 3900) and got given the REAL tax credits overpayment number which is very similar (0845 302 1429) and spoke to them. No one there was trying to get hold of me and they took the number down to report it to the police.

Thank All Of You for you comments, you know what i just missed a call from 08453003950, when i called back after few bells call shifted to pre recorded message having said that you hav received this call from HM, and they will call you back again when it will be required. I indeed get worried why they called me and for what. I tried to find out who actually called me and from where i put this number into google and come across this page, which helped too much, because today i have applied for the ext of my stay in UK and if i would have received this call today i would have answered all his question. Thank GOD you guys saved me.

i had a message on answer phone on mobile firstly a  woman asking me to phone and give my n.i number which i thought was odd then the next message was a guy asking that i phone before 8pm on the 29th that gives me a day i had to tell him my n.i so i googled the number and it brought me to this page it seem s to be a scam so please watch out!!

Clearly you shouldn't believe what I'm about to say (how do you know I'm not a scammer?) but there are far too many paranoid people here.  I was left a message by a caller from 0845 302 1426, claiming to be from HMRC.  I called back, and was asked only for the reference number they'd left in the message, plus my name and company name.  The agent then proceeded to tell me stuff which a scammer could only have known if they'd hacked into HMRC - i.e. I was dealing with HMRC.  I accept that you shouldn't believe what someone tells you when they phone claiming some identity, but if you're worried then merely ask them what the call relates to, then get a return phone number by some other means (in this case the HMRC web site).  As for asking an HMRC whether a particular phone number is one of theirs - pointless!  They'll have loads of extensions, and out-of-date phone directories.

I have had a couple of calls from this number.  One asking to speak to my husband and explaining that it was a Tax Credit matter and that they needed him to pass security before they would discuss.  If it were a genuine call from HMRC they would have known that any claim had been a joint one and would have been happy to speak to myself.  

I found the previous comments by Jon quite amusing.  On one hand we are to believe that the person was contacted by HMRC and on the other hand we are to believe that as a layperson they know the workings of the HMRC "They'll have loads of extensions, and out-of-date phone directories".

If it is genuine contact the HMRC on the numbers quoted on their website.  HMRC will know if you owe them money.

Just need to know who is this as unidentified number on saynoto0870 as it still doesn't recognise and i have been on hold, your last comments were 2008?? So assume this is a legitimate tel no?? Can anybody clarify please

I too have received several calls from this number, infact, 3 different numbers, all relating to the same issue. They didnt get any info from me but these people are bloody persistant and continually ring

Again the same as everyone else the phone call was received at work by my Boss. He left me an e-mail with the 08453021420 number for me. Googled the number as I did not recognise as HMRC, low and behold you all say the same thing. My next course of action will be to ignore the call and wait for an official letter to drop on the doorstep.

Are we so stupid to think A HMRC member of staff would bother to write a message on here to tell us its not a scam? they would'nt care less. Its the scam artists trying to plant that doubt in our minds.
These people are not silly, they are making thousands from scaring people.
HMRC would never tell you that you owe money and expect to pay it back immediatley. They would simply write to you, its also easy to set up websites that look very realistic

YOU MUST READ THIS IF YOU HAVE BEEN CALLED BY THESE NUMBERS, IT IS A SCAM, DON'T BE FOOLED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have just had a phone call on a mobile number which isn't even registered to me (apparently from HMRC the number being 0845 300 3950).The caller, a Scottish man asked me to confirm my N.I number, which I refused to do until he could confirm that he was indeed from HRMC. He said the only way he could do that was to get me to call another number - 0845 302 1420, which he said would verify the call he was making to me, then I should call him back on the number he called me on. Rather than do that I found this forum by entering the numbers he had given me on Google. Just to satisfy myself I found an old letter from HRMC and used the helpline number on that (0845 300 3900)to confirm or deny that they were in need of contacting me. The man I spoke to categorically confirmed that those numbers, although similar to their own were NOT anything to do with them, and that if any department were to contact me it would be A) logged for all other departments to see and B) that it would indeed be by letter, not phone. I have been advised to just put the phone down on these scammers and it has been reported by the real HRMC, I would suggest you do the same!! I noticed that in one comment here someone mentioned the missing child benefit files from a couple of years ago, I know, having received an apology letter  from them that my details were indeed lost in that fiasco, and I'm wondering how many others of you have been targeted because of that?
