Just had this call also, asking to speak to my mother by 8pm Monday. I told her my mother was currently away and would be until thursday, and her attitude turned immediately upbeat like she had coaxed me into believing it. Definitely a scam as i also have just phoned the real inland revenue.
Also, something that has cracked me up whilst reading this thread, people who work/seem to know/havepaid etc have found this thread? Unless you had a reason -perhaps to convince others of your scam- to do so. and also these different people are very aggressive in their posts and seem to have put a lot of work in to convince people they do not know that its real and seem to be very disgruntled that anyone thinks its a hoax.

They are committing a crime and will eventually be found out. report it and tell all your friends and family and tell them to do the same so these con artists cant get anyone else in the mean time.

I was called by this number ( 08453021420 ) and a message left on my answering machine to call back by 8pm on the following day. I did at first believe this was a scam and googled it so I contacted the police fraud prevention service and they said they had not heard anything about it. I then phoned HRMC using the number on their letterhead, and they informed me that it was indeed a genuine number and they were trying to get in touch with me, the man took my details and sorted the problem out immediately.
My honest advise to anyone faced with these types of calls would be:-
"DON'T respond to  a phone call or to anyone from a source you are not totally certain of. but certainly do check it out for yourself. In this instance phone the number on your letterhead or from the official government website and find out for yourself. Definitely do not trust information held on a website like this one.
This is definitely not a scam.

    Hansard's Evidence
0845 302 1420 is an unpublished HMRC Tax Credits Recovery telephone number.

This was confirmed by a freedom of information (FOI) request, made public in parliament and published in Hansard:

    http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm20 ... /80519w0019.htm

    "Tax Credits Recovery line  0845 302 1420"

Why HMRC do not state this on their website is beyond me. It just means they lose out on collections.

    Complete scam.

I work for "Big 4" accountancy firm and ex-HMRC Auditor. The reference is bogus - I can tell just from the format.

Also, never claimed tax credits, my self-assessment is 100% up to date, no overpayments or underpayments to claim.

Don't phone them back. If worried - get "contact us" of HMR|C website - www.hmrc.gov.uk/contactus

Dave, argument from authority is a logical fallacy, as is making strawmen arguments.
