I would strongly advise to call back asap as if you DO NOT respond the next step is recovery and the possibility of court action and bankruptcy.

I called back on normal tax office number, set up an affordable plan and no futher problems.

I've received 2 calls from the number 08453021427 on my mobile. The second time they left a message saying that it was Revenue & Customs and to give them a call back urgently.

The voice was a Scottish lady. What's this all about then?

My clients are getting constant calls from this number (08453021420). My clients dont usually speak english.

Usually, any government organisation uses a service called "language line" which is an interpreting service that they always use.

My clients know about language line and when they ask for it, the person calling just hangs up. This is something Revenue & Customs will not do, so here is a way of finding out if its R&C or not.

hi, i too have had a phone call today on a sunday from this number saying they are from hm revenue and customs, and i owe them money for an overpayment of tax credit, i was not suprised as i have had letters in the past saying i owed i just assumed the tax credits would sort themselves out by reducing my payments or something, anyway it is a real number, after scrawling all over the internet i found proff it is real not a scam, if you go on the uk parlimentary website, they have a page where they have to record every number registered to a governement department, this numer 08453021420 is on there as hm revenues and customs overpayment and banking department.

so not a scam, dont ignore, i always agree best to be safe than sorry and check these things out.

just called the tax credits advice line today, to double check and they confirmed there is a note on my account that someone called me yesterday, that they have started to call on a sunday now.

ive just taken a call from a scottish guy from this number asking me for details to confirm my identity, i told him i wouldnt give out details over the phone so he should write to me, he said he did on december 14th 2010 which is a lie because i was waiting for a bac payment from revenue and customs at that same time. i also dont understand why he rang my husbands mobile when i have never given that number to revenue and customs. I DO THINK ITS DODGY!!! if its legitimate then the Inland Revenue should have a word with their employees about how they are going about their work..

These people rang me on this same number like an idiot I believed them and they have now stolen money out of my account DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR DETAILS THEY ARE THIEVES

Yes this is a scam I stupidly gave my bank details and now they have stolen all my money from my account

you fools. It is HMRC. Next step is the Bailiffs. You only get a phone call when you ignore the letters. Just how stupid can you lot get.

You will do anything rather than pay back the overpayments you got.

Still, you have been warned, but you always know best....don't you.

The HMRC do not contact customers by phone and would never ask for bank details this way.  We would always contact customers in writing.

Just lookrd the link up and ti staes that it asppears to be a scam number, so that seems pretty official to me!!

There has been some conflicting advice on this thread so I called HMRC Tax Credits helpline directly using the number on the HMRC website, and they informed me that the number quoted 0845 3021420 is for the overpayments team.  They transfered me directly and I was able to talk to the right person and get the misunderstnading cleared up.  Basically they thought I owed them money when I didn't so we went through everytihng and got it all sorted.

Please note that if you are worried or concerned then call the number on the HMRC website like I did.

That way you have peace of mind that you are not being scammed.

HMRC use a service called Big Word; Language line was stopped years ago. HMRC could terminate the call for many reasons when they get through to a non English Speaking person asking for an interpreter.The cost of these calls is a minimum of £80 and they have to be sure they are speaking to the correct person and know what language they want to speak also an interpreter is not always available. This is a genuine number. All you have to do is call the tax credit helpline and ask them to confirm the number for Tax Credit Debt Management contact center. It's really not that hard!
