- finbopScottish lady claiming she was ringin from revenue and customs, she left answerphone message askin 2 ring bak on Thurs bfore 8pm quoting NI number as its urgent. I rung number straight away and spoke 2 a man he asked 4 my NI number, name, and address. He said I had an overpayment on my tax credits from 2009 and had 2 make an immediate payment or legal action will b taken, obviously a scam as if they had done their research properly i had already paid back an overpayment from 2009. So I quizzed him further about the alleged outstandin amount and he claimed several letters had been sent which i never received so i said i told him i will phone the real tax credits helpline and query this further to which he repied 'ok but make sure you ring this number to make your payments' HAHAHA YEH RIGHT! He asked for my bank details to make monthly installments, luckily i didnt trust this from the start of the phone call and didnt hand over any details. DONT GIVE OUT ANY DETAILS, HM REVENUE AND CUSTOMS WILL ONLY CONTACT U BY LETTER!
- finbop replies to SarahThis is also part of the scam as HMRC never ask for a contact number therefore cannot contact you by telephone. Very distirbing tht there is a similar pattern to all stories on here and upon phoning the REAL hmrc have been told they are part of a scam. Of course the phone calls will stop if u make a payment as the scammers have got what they rang for! Until the next scam eh?? NICE TRY!

- finbop replies to JohnIf its not a contact centre why are we asked 2 contact it? Also has anyone noticed they ask for the WIFE or speak to the woman directly?
- finbop replies to John| 1 replyhmrc WILL NOT contact a local debt company to sort out their payment recoveries as they have the power to put you in prison, so this is all blatently part of this poorly set up scam!!!!!!!!!
- TessIve now had two calls from these, with the 'you must call me blah, blah..'. Had one at a similar time last year too and didnt ring it back and NO letter from HMRC at the time. If the proper HMRC want anything they can write to me.. Their other number the contacted me on was 0121 5356345, if this helps anyone in their detective work.

- John replies to finbopThey wouldnt put you on prison as soon as a debt happens. The debt management department is within HMRC and not an outside agency.

0845 302 1420 - Tax credit overpayment
0845 302 1427 - Self Assessment Recovery.
Standard security: Full name, Date of Birth, Address.
Yes the callers can be to the point but they are trained to recover outstanding debts, not offer you a cruise.
Pay your tax, or tax credit overpayments. Don't ignore letters which will lead to the call in the first place.
Its the 21st century, HMRC most definitely contact by phone, NOT just letters.
IF YOU CONTACT YOUR LOCAL HMRC BUILDING THEY WILL NOT HAVE THE RELEVANT DETAILS AS THEY ARE NOT TAX CREDIT SPECIFIC BUILDINGS.
This site is just scaremongering.
Watch this post go ignored by more idiots.- Caller: HMRC

- sharonthis is a scam.i got message left on my phone yesterday saying i must call before 8pm today.i called tax office this morning and they say there not looking for me and they would never phone anyway it would be done in writing.BEWARE OF THESE PEOPLE AS THERE ASKING FOR ALL YOUR PERSONAL DETAILS.
- HMRCMy god, its a genuine number, funny how yous all have overpayments, letters are sent prior to a phone call, ignore the letters and get a phone call, a contact number is asked for hence the reason you can be phoned.
0845 302 1420 and 0845 302 1429 go to same offices, both deal with tax credits overpayments.
Site full of chancers, pay the money you owe. 3 offices in glasgow explains the scottish accent. - PROOFSection 3 – the 'direct recovery' process (customer no longer receives tax credits or has made a new claim)
Notifying the customer of an overpayment – TC610
When, following the end of an award, a tax credits overpayment has been established a Notice to Pay form (TC610) is automatically issued to the customer. The TC610 advises the customer of the amount due to be repaid to HMRC, within 42 days, and advises them that they can opt to spread the repayment over a period of 12 months. The TC610 also notifies the customer of the Payment Helpline telephone number (0845 302 1429), which they can contact to discuss paying back their overpayment. The Payment Helpline is part of Customer Contact Directorate. An example of the TC610 can be found at Section 5.
If the customer pays in full HMRC will take no further action.
If the customer contacts HMRC for help HMRC can discuss their affordability to repay and agree a Time to Pay arrangement appropriate to the customer’s financial circumstances. Where there is low affordability due to unemployment, or the customer is on sickness or incapacity benefits, HMRC may consider putting on hold or remitting the debt – depending on individual circumstances. Further information is available at Section 4.
If the customer contacts the Tax Credit Helpline to dispute their overpayment HMRC can send forms TC846 and COP26 or the customer can download these from the HMRC website. Suspension of the overpayment will be automatically applied on receipt of the completed TC846. If HMRC receive correspondence, disputing the overpayment, it will suspend recovery until a decision has been reached.
Written reminders
If an overpayment has not been fully repaid 42 days following the issue of the TC610 notice to pay, and the customer has not contacted HMRC, details of the overpayment will be automatically sent to DMB. A reminder letter asking for payment will be sent automatically by DMB's computer system:
if the customer pays in full following this letter, HMRC will take no further action
if the customer disputes the recovery of the overpayment, HMRC will suspend action to recover the overpayment while it reconsiders
if the customer contacts HMRC for help, HMRC can agree a payment arrangement or consider putting on hold or remitting the debt due to low affordability
if the customer does not pay in full, or contact HMRC to agree a payment arrangement, HMRC will issue a further (stronger worded) warning letter
Telephone contact
Following the issue of the reminder letters, if the customer has not contacted HMRC, the Debt Management Telephone Centre (DMTC) will call them. The DMTC will discuss the customer’s ability to repay (as detailed previously) and payment options, including an instalment arrangement:
If the customer pays in full HMRC will take no further action.
If the customer disputes the recovery of the overpayment, HMRC will refer the customer to the Tax Credit Helpline. DMB will withhold recovery action, allowing the customer time to do this.
If the customer sets up a time to pay arrangement then recovery action will stop providing payments are kept up to date. - simonThese are complete TOSSERS claiming 2 b CUSTOMS AND EXCISE they SCARE peopele into believing they owe money and prey on the vunerable ignore their threats and ask for written confirmation

- HelI've had several messages on my answerphone, claiming to be from HM Revenue and Customs, always left on a Saturday afternoon, asking me to call 0845 302 1420 no later than 8pm on the Monday quoting my NI numbers. They're always scottish ladies leaving the message, asking for me by my married name (got married October 09 so fairly up to date). I haven't called them back as I know that HMRC don't call you, they write to you. Googled the number and found this page, so have emailed all my friends to warn them not to give out any info. Sure enough, neither Tax Credits/CSA/Child benefit have any record of anyone trying to contact me and I've had no letters. GGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!

- Jane Jones| 1 replyI got a call at work yesterday to call this number and have my National insurance number ready. Stupid me gave it to them. they said I owed 500 Family Tax credit from 2008. I explained I had no idea what they were talking about. They said I need to speak to someone else, I explained I was at work and if they needed to to send the paperwork through the post.
I have today called them back and they have assured me that this is not a scam and she is sat in a office in Manchester. I asked why they called my work number and she advised I must have given it at sometime in the past. I then said well if I owe you money you can put it in writing.- Caller: revenue and customs

- Very Miserable and SuicidalGuys,
Read this forum when they were ringing me last month, and decided to ignore it. What a tw*t I am. All of the systems are now automated. Yes I received the letters, but life is busy and I ignored them.
This morning I received the CCJ Claim against me. WHAT!? Not had any warning!!! Rang the HMRC enforcement office which has placed it. HMRC were trying to ring me, and I ignored the calls. "Scots woman telling me to call rev and cust on 0845...." If I'd taken them I'd have been able to arrange something for repayment. As is now, I have a debt of unpaid tax in to £10's of thousands due to my nievity and 28 days in which to pay (14 days before I completed my Acknowledgement of Service). My wife has taken the kids and gone to her mums, I'm heading to CAB to see if I can declare bankruptcy - I'm going to lose my house, cars etc - I will also lose my job, as we have to be squeaky clean due to the work we do for companies like Experian etc.
So I do look like I'm now better of kissing a train. At least the wife and kids get and keep the home I've built.
I suggest if you do get these calls, you treat them seriously.- Caller: HMRC

- LauraIt just happened to me and i checked number on net as I thought it was odd the way they give a time limit to responding.
- DavidHad a phone call this morning and things didn't sound right.
Gave them nothing and phoned HMRC to see if they were after me. No record of anybody placing a call to me. Beware, give them nothing and check for yourself.- Caller: HMRC
