- Phil KnightTwo calls within 5 minutes pretending to be from BT SMS service. Presumably a scam to get you to call a premium rate number.
- Call type: Scam suspicion
- Bill| 2 repliesCalled, but having my wife in acute hospital care this was NOT wanted.
Just plain evil people SCAM - uk resident replies to Bill| 1 replySorry your wife in hospital, hopefully will be well enough to return home soon, so what was the scam they tried?
- B-Edwards replies to uk residentPost go back to 2007, and it is hard to get a fix on the exact scam, other than it is related to text messages and text messaging. Might be a phishing scam. Is possible the number is used by several scamming outfits.
There are also lots of shills are trolls visiting this thread, so you have to be careful what conclusions you reach. The only sensible thing is to not trust calls or texts from this number. - GatsbyThere is much confusion about this number but this number will call when someone sends a text to a landline. It is a BT operated service used by most mobile phone operators to relay an audio translation of the text.
There are many posts on this site/thread going back years that recommend sending a text to your own landline to check how it works before you risk picking up. You have 24 hours to retrieve the text before it's deleted.. When you answer the computer will announce itself and then, importantly, tell you the numbers of the originators of the text messages that you have waiting. These numbers can be checked if not sure. You will be offered various options including listening to the text, deleting the text, blocking the number and changing the hours that this service will call. This is a free service. You can call this number back to retrieve a message but there will be an 0845 business rate charge - 5p per minute plus your network access charge according to the BT Text Service web page. Be aware that the computer translating the text struggles with poor spelling, emojis, links, attachments or abbreviations.
I get the occasional audio text to my landline. As far as I am aware, scammers using this service are rare - you can't click the iffy link on your landline - but may happen so take care and be aware of the safety advice above.- Caller: BT Audio Text Service

- Mick EllisThis number is a mix of both. I have a system set up on my partners phone so that if she is out and gets into trouble, she presses a button on the back of her phone and it dials certain numbers and also sends out text messages to those numbers saying that she needs help.
One of those messages goes to BT as a text message that then gets forwarded to my landline, with the message saying that 'this is *******, and I need help - ******* = my partners name. This message will call you every so often until you pick up the phone and listen to it.
One of the hindrances of this service is that telemarketers can use the system to send messages to you and many other people at the same time.
My advice would be that if you need to have the system available like I do to get urgent messages from a friend or partner for their safety and security, then you will have to put up with the messages from other people, be they scammers, telemarketers or ambulance/accident chasers, but if you do not need or want these calls you can stop them by calling 0800 587 5252 from the landline you are receiving the messages on. This information comes direct from BTs website so whether this will work if you are with another provider I do not know, but you can always call your own provider and ask them.
It is unfortunate but a necessary fact that as communications systems get better and more reliable, there will be ways that people can use the systems to abuse people in their own homes. TPS is useful, but will not stop overseas calls getting through. It seems that the regulator will only take action if enough people make complaints about domestic home based callers. Overall, this number is not a scam in itself, but is open to abuse by scammers and other telemarketers.- Caller: BT Text Messaging Service

- anon replies to sarahNo it's a neucence/scam I'm unlisted and the number is never given to anyone ever, my land line exists only because it's tied to a contract. No texts to me and I shouldn't have to take measures to evade a so called service, it's obviously an attempt to scam and just annoying that landlines make it so hard to block calls.

- OMPITA [UK]This was NOT A NUISANCE CALL. It was a genuine text message from BT [to my landline phone] confirming that an engineer was scheduled to attend regarding reported landline & broadband problems.

- uk resident replies to Robert Fif you're using the BT 1571 service (and for anyone with an ansaphone), no, it won't deliver the text someone has sent you. but if you pick up the handset while it's ringing, there's guidance on what to do next, basically press #1 to listen to the message; it also gives the source number sending the text but very few of us can remember 11-digit mobile numbers that all look similar. try sending a short text to your own landline (eg "this is from my mobile") to hear what it sounds like, what the relay service does, and how to curtail or cancel it. calls from 0845 numbers do not cost anything to receive but if you do call it back, it's NOT a free call.
Note of caution! If you find yourself speaking to a human or robovoice, end the call immediately as that will be an attempt to scam you. (all telephone numbers can be spoofed, which seems beyond the wit of telecomms companies to prevent!) - FrancescaReceived call 7 times in 4 hours.Didn't answer, nobody uses my landline
