had unsolicited text and had a look at it ,was unable to view anything, got 6 texts back saying "thankyou for downloading this video at £4.50 each. Service provider(orange) are unable to do anything as its a third party except to give me a telephone number of the company. this could cost me £27.00 for something that i didnot request or have anything to show 4 it, its outrageous and in my opinion, illegal

I'm an O2 contract customer who got a "thanks for downloading" text after receiving an "important message" with the option "go to" which I selected. When I saw it was a download I tried to cancel, but they still got me.  Apparently it cost me £4.50. Been to Phone pay plus website & complained about them

I had a video message yesterday which I opened thinking it was from a friend realised it was'nt and tried to cancel it. Five min later had a text message from 82355 thanking me for downloading the video and took £5 from my credit. I'm furious that these  people can steal from me so easily and possibly get away with it. Rang 02 they gave me a number to ring to cancel but cant get to speak to anyone left my number hopefully they will return my call.

    just been had
Same thing text than video download followed by credit being removed without permission this is illegal. On tracing found the firm is Venista who rent space from WINS the cable people. Reported to official gov. payphoneplus. who want enough evidence to take action against them.
Only problem told to contact the firm for refund and guess what after several phone calls back to square one, promise of call back like other people but this number is another stop the text not the firm taking the money.Like alot of people can not afford to loose credit as on a pension

This is still going on . I got scammed today for £5 when I opened a text that said service message. It downloaded a video that I cant see and took the credit from my phone. This is theft. I have contacted ORANGE and told them not to pay this and I want a refund. If they dont refund me I will switch to 02.

I received the same message while I was on holiday in Spain.

Went to o2 web to retrieve it thinking it was a "service message" but when I saw the download begin I cancelled it before it could complete.

I have'nt received any further texts but I found in the phone memory, nokia n86, an sis file refering to gambling that had been placed there during the download which I have now deleted.

I also deleted the message but it was prefixed +55

    Guess I better contact o2
Thanks to all for the input

Further to my previous post of 29 Nov I have taken your advice and rang 0870 6091720 leaving a message, no reply yet! Texted STOP to 83044 but this has cost me another 42p.  Rang Phonepayplus on 0800 500212 said it was ref an 0870 number and they said I should talk to Ofcom 0300 1233333!  Ofcom said ring Phonepayplus and after choosing the menu option for 087 numbers wait for a human being and tell them the short code 83044. Phonepayplus is collecting info so tell them !!!  They said that at the end of their investigation they would inform everyone who complained of the outcome and help get refunds if possible.  After a pointy email vodaphone have refunded my £3.83 as 'a gesture of goodwill'.  Perhaps another one might get my 42p back as well!!

I am exactly the same as everyone above. I am with o2......when I first opened the message I didnt realise what it was, got charged £5.....then I kept getting messages to tell me to "top up2 as my phone balance is low (which my phone never does), so I refused to top up as I knew more money would come off. Eventually I had to top up a few days ago, and yes, another £3 something came off.....since then I have had no other deductions or texts.....Untill NOW....I haven't even received any dodgy texts today, and yet out of nowhere, my balance came down another £5...followed by a message to say "thanks for downloading"....I never even downloaded or received anything!
I have texted back STOP to 82344 and received "FREE MSG, Thank you for your STOP message. The last service from the short code requested will be stoppped for your phone within one working day"...really no idea what this means, but I am going onto the Phone Pay Plus website too!!! I am not  happy, I cannot afford to keep topping up phone for stupid companies to decide to steal!!!

Re the above, I phoned Ofcom...raised a complaint, they advised to phone Phonepayplus, raised a complaint with them, and they advised they have received many calls regarding the exact same company....he advised to call 01494 750 500 for the company WIN, as they have something to do with the company texting me...she took my details, advised she would get Vinista to call me regarding this. I shall await and see what happens....
Meanwhile, whilst typing this, I received a text in reply to my STOP text (see above"..this says: "you will not receivefurther messages from this service unless you use it again. STOP promotion for all our services? 08706091795 of info.uk@w2mobile.com....  I will visit this website and see what it has to say

Just received one of these messages. Foolishly opened it assuming it was from a friend. A silly little video of a weightlifter came on. I then got another text thanking me for downloading the video and telling me i had been charged £4.50.I neither wanted or asked for it. There was a contact number to ring...surprise surprise, an answering machine....Have just got off the phone to payphoneplus, made an official complaint which will now be investigated..i suggest anyone who receives one of these to make a complaint to "payphoneplus" and hopefully this scam will be stopped..

Seems that w2mobile don't care for people's privacy, nor the law here in the UK.
Their marketing strategy is to try to trick people into signing up for whatever it is they provide.
Here in the UK, you can help prevent the receipt of unsolicited SMS's etc by registering your mobile number with the "Telephone Preference Service".  Just type them into your search engine.  If you want to register more than one number, best to do them one at a time.  You should receive an e-mail link to finally complete the procedure for each number registered.
While you're on the TPS site, go to FAQ No 7 and follow the links to complain to the ICO about w2mobile.

I was out in Australia on holiday just this very month, and while I was there I also had this text come in, and the same thing has happened to me, but I have just been into my Mobile shop to find out if they know of the problem, and they did'nt but advised me to go on line, and it is now that I find out that it was O2 who are the culprits, so I will be going into town again now to there shop, and to have some words with them, the cheek of these people, they should be pulled over the coals for being so rotten to innocent peoples personal phones, who are not even there server, I am so angry,

    Brian,
it's important that you report these people to the UK Regulator Phonepayplus
    http://www.phonepayplus.org.uk/output/Make-a-complaint.aspx

they are targeting thousands of people knowing that only a few will notice and even fewer will bother asking for a refund.

best of luck and please report them

    @Victim
if you're not going to complain to the Regulator you are going to have to accept you are their customer for life and they will be able to send you these messages when they like.
    http://www.phonepayplus.org.uk/output/Make-a-complaint.aspx

there is also nothing to stop them selling your number to another bunch of crooks.

    best of luck
