This call showed up on my phone bill for 1.80 pounds and only lasted 3 seconds. A total scam apparently caused by a pop up when i was on the internet on my phone. Have made my complaint but doubt i will ever get the money back for it !!

My iPhone dialled out to this number whilst I was using the Independent's ad sponsored newsreader application. Suspect I might have hit one of the ad's at the top of the application whilst I was scrolling through the article I was reading. Call lasted 8 seconds before I killed it - some blurb about "calls to this number costing more from mobiles." Nothing showing on my bill at present.

Call has now appeared on my bill - total cost of £1.70. Outrageous.

Will file an additional dispute with PhonePayPlus.

@Scam: "The relevant company appears to be Rare Direct Media. They have a free phone complaints number listed on this web page: www.raredirectmedia.co.uk/tandc.html, which is: 0800 228 9382."

Would suggest that this would be a total waste of time in terms of gaining recompense.

    Big Stu
I found this number on my bill about a week ago.

As it turns out I called the freephone number and the guy said that they would refund the charge.

They are doing some kind of advertisment for businesses that costs 1.50 for each enquiry. He said they spoke to Admob and they said that the user had to confirm the call before it dialled.

Seemed to add up after I went on bubblewrap?

He also said the reason why some people are getting massive bills is because 02 are adding a load on each call!?!?!Not sure why they dont change numbers, unless they're in it with 02!!

Should be fun trying to get 02 to refund the extra charges guys!?! [***]...

@Big Stu: "They are doing some kind of advertisment for businesses that costs 1.50 for each enquiry. He said they spoke to Admob and they said that the user had to confirm the call before it dialled."

This is not correct. On iPhone, in other circumstances such as in Safari where phone numbers are highlighted, if a user selects one of these, confirmation to dial the number is required. This is **NOT** the case for AdMob ads (certainly not within the Independent newsreader application) and in my opinion would therefore be considered sharp practice.

I have now raised a complaint with PhonePayPlus about this and will also be attempting to ascertain whether there are any developer rules within the iPhone APIs which developers need to follow in relation to linking to phone numbers. If prompting is required, then I will be asking Apple to investigate this. Not sure if I will get anywhere.

Well done for getting a refund, Big Stu!

The O2 'load' on the call I "made" was 20p - this was for an 8 second call so £1.50 a minute. Totally outrageous. How do these people sleep at night?!

For anyone who's interested, this page: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/fea ... PhoneLinks.html provides info on how to use the 'Tel' URL schema within applications and on web pages. Note the following text:

"In a native application, opening a URL with the tel scheme initiates dialing without further prompting from the user."

So, the AdMob representative was spouting BS as the Apple code guide for using links to phone numbers in iPhone apps places *no* requirement on developers to prompt before a phone number in an app is dialled.

This lack of prompting would seem to me to create 'carte blanche' in relation to allowing for the spurious dialling of phone numbers in iPhone apps to premium rate numbers. I cannot understand why a phone number link in a web page would requre prompting but one in an application would not. Anyone?

    Haypi Kingdom Scam
Was using the Haypi Kingdom app on my iphone, touched an innocuus part of the screen with no numbers on it and it blacked out. I assumed the game had crashed and left my desk to get something off the printer. When I got back to my desk I realised my phone had automatically been on a call for 50 seconds.

I also called the freephone number and likewise was told I would receive a refund. Whether the cheque appears is another matter...

Apple should be pressed to remove this automatic dialing capablility. My phone was left calling this premium rate number for a number of minutes without me being aware of it - in a similar fashion to Haypi. Wide open for scamming...

I have attempted to raise this with Apple and have also posted details of the issue on their forums. See: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2306105&tstart=0

However, I suspect that unless there is serious publicity surrounding this issue, Apple will have little motivation to change the behaviour. And of course, it is not in O2's or the advertisers interests to do so.

Perhaps asking OFCOM to investigate is the way to go?

I received a call from this number straight after using the bubble wrap app on my iphone, it cut out after a second though.
So, this is going to cost me at least £1.50?! I cant believe that Apple and O2 can let this sort of thing happen!!

Just seen this number appear on my first Tesco iPhone invoice - £2.00 for a minute. Obviously didn't knowingly dial the number, it was a few weeks ago, but could have been whilst using Bubblewrap like others have reported.

3 calls each for around £1.70 each for aroun 8 secs in length. I did not call this number or at least, I did not see the dialling screen pop up on my iPhone.

I cropped up on this issue by someone forwarding it to me from the MSE forums. I thus forwarded this link onto Register, and we have a story - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/01/27/iphone_admob/
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/01/28/iphone_app_probe/

Hopefully this is now resolved as the AdMob company has updated the software.
