Here is a letter I sent to the Editor of the Seattle Times:
To the Editor:

There are one or more people at (206) 456-0661 running a scam in which they represent themselves as being from Microsoft. They claim that the callee's computer is variously "being attacked" or "sending error messages" or "has a virus". If you follow their advice, you actually install a virus on your machine. They then charge you to "fix" the problem. You can get some idea of the extent of the problem by Googling the phone number.

This has been going on for a few weeks now and is making everybody in Seattle look bad. I am hoping the local newspaper can shame the Seattle police or INS or phone company into actually doing something about it.

Is this legal?  What can we do to stop this nonsense?  Whenever I report it to Microsoft, they direct me to their website regarding "Scams and how to avoid them".  That doesn't really help much.

I'm in Ontario and just got a call from 206-456-0661. The guy with a very strong accent claimed to be from www.etechyogi.com, a certified Microsoft partner. He said that my computer has been infected by malicious code and wanted me to go to www.support.me, and then enter a 6 digit code that he gave me. After I entered the code, the browser prompted for a download from secure.logmeinrescue.com. I told him that I'm not going to install anything and hung up. Meanwhile he tried to call me another two times (but I won't pick up the phone for this number again).

I receive calls from this number many times a day. When I answer, nobody answers or a machine says, "Good-bye" so I can't request I be taken off the calling list. Any suggestions on how to stop this harassment?

Claimed they needed to "fix" our Windows computer. LOSERS!!!! We have a Mac.

called me with a series ID # (?), said my computer was sending an error message, "if you don't believe me then type in bah blah blah", played with this idiot with a bad accent for awhile. His tipping point as to my identity is the way I have my telephone number listed. I am unlisted in the book but it is still visible through directory services. Had a few minutes entertainment out of him, then asked him about his morales, he had no answer (surprise surprise) (shame on me for having fun at Achmad's expense, right...)

My wife got a call from these guys and the [***] guy on the phone said he was from "Windows" and that she should go to the computer and get her IP address etc.  She pretended to go along with it, then asked "Does anyone actually fall for this?"  The guy paused.  Then kept repeating "I want to fock you.  I want to fock you.  I want to fock you."

So don't think it's legitimate.

recived calls in the last two weeks from this number 206 246-0661 with cracking background as others have said and if you say goodbye it mimics you. otherwise nothing.

I got the call today, I already knew it was a scam, but i let Kevin take me through tthe Spill. He was a very good actor. He had me check my system for errors and when i told him tere were some, he said, "Oh my god, your computer is so messed up". I kept him going about 30 minutes. THEN I droped the BOMB on him. I told him i knew he was calling from Pakistan and he need to get a REAL job, and then this........"Kevin, I'm a Christian, and my Father, the ONE TRUE GOD does not like for perple to try and take advantage of His kids! So I prayed, Father, I pray if Kevin is lagit, then Bless him, but if not, and he is a scam, then i pray in the name of Jesus Christ that You stop this man in his tracks. I pray chaos, hardship, and physical pain on him till he turns to You for forgiveness and repents. I pray in the assurance of Your Blood that bought me Victory, Amen"

I was duped in November with these callers (telling me my Windows program is no longer licenced and therefore is letting in spyware)  and I initially hung up on them, told them it sounded like a scam, they were very persistent and my computer had froze up, so eventually I went along with it even though my gut told me not to.  They referred me to their manager when I was frustrated, they gave me a number to call to verify, had me check the swappccare.com website to prove authenticity. They have called me periodically letting me know there are scammers out there, and they aren't and remember they gave me a code to use and other computer techicians won't have the code.   Now Feb 2012 I am receiving a call from 206-456-0661 and this time when I put info into the internet, it shows all of it has been a scam.  I always thought I was pretty wary and couldn't be taken in.  Realize these guys give you their names, company names, phone numbers to call back, websites to look at.  However its all a scam according to Canada's Anti-fraud website.  Thought I had checked for that in November, but I was had.

Got a call from this number this afternoon, he was blowing into the phone.

Received a call today, 2/22/2012, saying I was selected to receive a free laptop from the US Department of Education.  The English was absolutely horrible and the first sign I knew this was a scam.  They had difficulties answering my questions and simply pressed on with saying I was selected for a laptop.  I simply hung up the phone.

I received a call from this number warning me of a file I downloaded. He needed info from my computer to assist me with clearing my computer of the problem files...
I have not had any problems, nor do I download things from untrusted sites.
As I questioned him as to who he work for his english got worse. To the point I couldn't understand him. I thought everyone should know.

How do I get this blocked?  5-10 calls a week

getting these calls north of the border too. I live in B.C., got a call tonight, same scam about my windows system being infected. Obviously bull, since i use a tablet. Hope no one actually falls for this crap.

I only receive legitimate calls from 1 overseas phone no. All other overseas numbers I no longer answer. However, there are other members of my household who might answer and it concerns me greatly what the possible implications are. I am now also concerned about the implications of making this comment, but I have been receiving almost daily calls about my computer and, no matter how often I say that I don't accept unsolicited calls, they keep coming. Can anything be done about this? Is there anyone who can answer this question?

Is there any point in posting these comments? As far as I can see, they don't result in any useful advice. Am I missing something?

Finally answered the call.  Pretended I only spoke Arab.  She didn't understand a thing and hung up.

I got the same call about my computer.  When I tried to call Microsoft to verify this call , one can not find a phone number for Microsoft on their website. Tec number is there but no where can you contact a live person to address your problem. I would think Microsoft would have a site to help customers with scams.
