When I answered, it was a recording saying they wanted to verify something and asking to hold. The recording didn't mention anything about who they were. When a person came on the line, they said it was Wells Fargo, and he wanted to verify charges. He listed a few of my recent charges and I confirmed them. They didn't ask for any information.

Wow - now the phishers are posting here, too. Nice scam.

I do not have a PayPal account and therefore have never had any kind of PayPal activity on a credit card. Today my callmenot.com device intercepted this number around 6:10 pm. If the caller enters a number, the call will go through; if not, the call is screened, as are all robocalls like this one. Had this been a legit call from PayPal or any credit card company with a concern, the caller would have rung through.

Definite scam, folks. Don't believe any of the posters here who state otherwise. They are with the scammers.

CONFIRMED BY PAYPAL. THIS IS A SCAM!  DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANY OF YOUR CREDIT CARD OR BANK INFO EVEN IF IT IS ONLY THE LAST 4 DIGITS OF YOUR CARD!!!  This company called me from 800-830-8574 and I called back where they verified the phone number and they then wanted the last 4 digits of my card. They said it was in regards to my Paypal credit card. I didn't enter the numbers of my credit card (even if it was just the last 4) because it smelled fishy.  I immediately called Paypal support and spoke to their fraud department and they confirmed that there is NO SUCH COMPANY that they have hired to mediate suspicious activity. They said that if there was suspicious activity, they would contact you via email or simply block the transaction. THIS IS NOT LEGIT. HANG UP, DO NOT ANSWER, OR JUST DELETE THE MESSAGE FOR YOUR SAFETY. I gave Paypal the phone number and they are launching an investigation into this company.

This is a valid fraud detection number. They were checking on my PayPal card. I called Paypal and they verified the number.

Totally legitimate. Asked no revealing information, had access to my transactions (in detail) and only interested in if they were truly legitimate. Full marks to my bank for being so diligent - as we had done some odd purchases!

This number is legit. I didn't call the number directly. I called my bank to verify whether or not it was truly a card verification number through my banking institution. It was. They asked if I made a transaction that seemed suspicious in the amount of 1 cent to a company that I had never heard of. This was a "test" transaction made by a potential thief. They shut the card down and issued a new one.

This is a legit number. They called me to verify transactions on my credit card. The reason was because I hadn't used that card for a long time, then all of a sudden I bought a plane ticket for over $1,000. It hit their system as being a suspicious so it called me. The automated system asks you to enter your credit card number then it proceeds to list recent transactions (they wouldnt' know your recent transactions if it were a scam) and have you confirm whether you did each transaction. Not a scam.

Why would they just ask for the last four digits of your card if they were a scam?? The last four digits are the numbers that are always displayed on receipts and the others are blocked off. Use your head! They would only be a scam if they wanted your whole number. They probably just wanted to verify that they were looking at the right account on their screen. If Paypal told you it was a scam (and I doubt they did), then that particular PayPal representive has no sense. This is a legit number trying to verify that suspicous transactions on your card were made by you and not somebody else. Failure to give them information could result in your card being deactivated for your safety. Thanks!

Ignore this number at your own financial peril.  It is a security verification service used by a number of US banks and credit providers, as well as PayPal.  If your account shows activity that is unusual for you, they will call and verify the last four or five transactions with you - this includes charges that were declined.

I was contacted about my PayPal debit card.  One charge they wanted to verify was legit.  Then there were SIX fraudulent ones, including two that had been declined, totaling more than $1300.  Because of this service, I was alerted to the fact that someone got my debit card number, and was trying to use it in LONDON.  I live in Ohio!

If you use a credit card or debit card AT ALL, you'd be a fool to ignore these calls.  Had I been such a fool, I'd have a huge mess on my hands and be scrambling to recover a lot of money.  Since I responded to the call, I'm not being held responsible for the fraudulent transactions, the card has been closed, and a new one is being issued.  We stopped someone's attempted spending spree within mere hours of their attempts to start it.

Indeed, this is a legit service, and should not be ignored. The recording will provide you with transaction details without asking you for anything but the last four digit of the card number (hardly a security risk, there). From that point, all the information is presented to you to verify the legitimacy of the transaction(s).

Missy is right; this service can save you from thousands of dollars of fraud loss and the grief and aggravation which accompany such happenings.

I am pretty sure that this is a legit call from a banking third-party fraud detection department. I just purchased a $1400 camera online, then I get a call from this number asking to verify the purchase. Good thing too, nice to know somebody is looking out, I guess... Remember guys, NEVER USE THE CALL BACK NUMBER PROVIDED, EVEN IF YOU ARE SURE THAT IT IS A LEGITIMATE PHONE CALL. Always, always, always, just call the number on the back of your bank-issued card and ask for the correct department, this way you know you're talking to your bank and not some scam "artist".

This, in my case at least, was a legitimate phone call. I get lots of spam / scam calls, but this was the same day I made a major purchase online and my bank called to verify. I instead called back on the bank's number on my card (NEVER RETURN CALL TO CALLBACK NUMBER PROVIDED!). Strange that someone tried to scam you from this number. I swear though, in my case, that this was legitimate. Maybe some other people here are scammers providing counterintelligence, but I know this was a real call of real concern on my credit account. Hopefully you won't get called again. Those punks.

Double checked with PNC before calling. It's a 3rd-party fraud protection service. Didn't ask for any info, just verified my name, and they read back the last few charges and asked me to confirm.

800.830.8574 left message regarding recent transactions on my card.

Called bank, they stated it is a valid number and I need to call to verify the transactions.

Called number the gentleman on the line stated they were with First Data Resources which appears to be an arm of the firstdata.com merchant processing service.  Essentially, a merchant processor is the middle-man that processes credit card transactions.

All he seeded was the phone number called and my CC last four digits, he asked about the last 3 transactions and if they were mine, then said thank you and the call was over.

Although the number/service is legit, my only real gripe is that now my information has once again been distributed to *yet* another 3rd party entity that may or may not protect is as well as I feel it should be protected.

I understand why everyone would think it's a scam, but it's not. read the above posts. The company is called First Data Corp. If it were  a scam, you would have already been taken advantage of because they already have all of your info!! The reason Paypal doesn't directly call you is because it's from the bank of the card issuer. Paypal does not issue debit cards, a bank does! That's why it has a mastercard logo on it. The bank called you to verify, not paypal! the banks are only trying to protect themselves from you making a claim against fraudulent activity in case you did get scammed on your last 5 transactions.

I called this number back and she stated she was with First Data Corp and was extremely persistent in trying to get my information.  I asked her what transactions she was calling about and she named some weird company in new jersey.  I said well when did this company try to access my account and she stated four different time this same night.  I said well then why were you guys calling me yesterday (I had four messages the day before).  She said I show nothing for yesterday.  I said well then why would you have called yesterday.  She said because of these charges I mentioned.  I said maam I understand that you may be a "fraud verification" company, but you are not psychic.  There would be no reason to call me yesterday for some charges that supposedly showed up today.  She said maam do you not care about the security of your card?  I asked what times the supposed transactions went through and she gave me the times of 6:36, 7:05, 8:06, 8:08 and 8:07 all p.m. I said well why were you calling me yesterday and this morning over transactions that hadn't even occurred.  She said maam we have outgoing and incoming calls and I'm the incoming call system.  I don't know why outgoing called you yesterday or this morning.  I said are you looking at my account?  She said yes I said well if you are who you are you would be able to see why your company called me over 24 hours before any "questionable" activitiy showed on my account or you guys need to start a future telling service.  I insisted that I would simply go to my bank first thing in the morning since I did not know who she was.  She said I'll let you talk with my supervisor and I explained that was simply another unknown person on the other end of a phone line.  She said she was going to have to freeze my account if i did not give her information on my account to verify I was the owner.  I said that would be perfect if you could freeze my account then I can go to the bank in the morning and figure out what is going on.  She said well then I need you to verify some information what is your address.  I said I know what my address is and if you are who you say your are so do you.  She said maam I'm going to freeze your card and you are going to have to go to the bank.  I said please do.  She said well you won't be able to make any purchases.  I said good that's what I want and she again insisted on me giving her my information. She said well that will be a wasted trip to your bank because they will tell you just to call me back.  I said no they wont or I'll close the account.  She said you need to just me your information and take care of this right now.   I said no she became rude and agitated and I said lady I'm done with you I'll speak to someone I know face to face in the morning.  She just hung up on me.  I wouldn't doubt that anyone with a "positive" comment on this number is simply a representative of the same fraudulent company trying to coax people into thinking they are legit.  NEVER give your account information to someone on the phone.  If they threaten to freeze your account -- let them.  then go to the bank and fix it but do not give them any information.  They can find that you have a bank card to a certain bank but can't see the actual security code or all of the digits.  BE CAREFUL!

Got a call from this number saying they were from Paypal wanting to verify my account activity.  sounded fishy.  I called the customer service number on the back of my card.  First guy said this was a scam, but he needed me to talk to the actual department that handled the cards.  They said no, this was a real call, they contract out the verification calls to a company that does that, so that same company also does the calls for Wells Fargo and the other sites that I have seen mentioned here.  Looks like this is a real call and not a scam.
