Just got a call from this # today saying it was about my Paypal card.  I thought it was someone trying to fish so I called the customer service number on the back of my card to contact the company directly.  The first rep I spoke to said that no one had tried to contact me, so I asked her to verify if the number on the automated message was from their company and it turned out that it is from their debit card department.  I was transferred over there and they verified that I had been called and that I needed to go through the automated system to verify transactions that were made today.  (I had a lot of small transactions that wouldn't need my PIN which is what I think triggered it) The system asked for the last 4 digits of my card and then went through 5 transactions with the amounts and where they were at and asked me to verify if I'd authorized them.  One of the automated transaction verification messages said $36, when my transaction was actually for $36.42 so I called Paypal back directly and asked to speak to someone in the debit card department who double checked my account and verified that the automated message that said $36 instead of $36.42 was just a glitch.  I've had to do this before with my regular bank, but not for Paypal.  I'm assuming my card would have been locked if I'd tried to make any further purchased if I hadn't called to verify the transactions.  Long story short, when in doubt, find another # directly from the company's website or your card and if it's a legit call, you'll be able to find out.

I've gotten a call from them a year or so ago when I was trying to buy gas and it refused to take my card. Obviously since I tried using my card so many times and failing they called and wanted to make sure it was me trying to use it. I got a call from them today and they verified the last 7 or so transactions with me and thanked me. They only ask for your phone number and your first name. The automated dude does ask for the last 4 of your debit/credit card, but thats really not a big deal as anyone could easily get that from stealing a receipt from you. I'm pretty sure they called because I made such a small purchase of 10 cents through the android market today. Such a small amount must have seemed suspicious. The call happened only 30 minutes or so after making the purchase so it makes sense to me. It's not a scam, just call your bank if you think it's suspicious. They're going to tell you to call them back anyways.

I just received a call from this number. When I answered it was a computerized voice asking for verification on account transaction. As I am in college an a Security and Risk Analysis major I knew not to give ANY information. Then I came to this website and saw a majority of people saying it was a call from their bank and gave them the last four digits of their card. DO NOT DO GIVE ANY INFORMATION. These people are saying that by giving them their last four digits that these people cannot take anything. It is rather easy actually, you would be surprised, I called my bank (PNC) and they said this was NOT a call from them and they have NO relation to this number. Do not be the idiot who falls for stuff like this. You will be very surprised how easy it is to generate a number code.

An automated voice called me this morning from this number and left a voicemail stating that they were calling from the secruity dept of my bank (BancorpSouth) and asked me to call back to confirm charges.  I called my bank, it was indeed a valid number from their security department.  Apparently I ordered something online last night from a company based out of California & this triggered security.  The woman at my bank said that since so many fraudulent charges come from "companies" with CA area codes, especially during the holidays, they just wanted to confirm the charge.

It's a credit card monitor that calls you if there was suspicious activity on your card.  What triggered mine was I tried to put the down payment for a car using my bank's (Bank of the West) debit.  I forgot about the $500 limit per transaction on it and it was denied at the dealer.  I wrote a check instead.  When I got home there was a message from this number.  I called it and they told me the last 4 transactions on the card and asked if they were authorized.  I told them yes and explained not to let the big down payment one through as I'd already handled it.  That was all.

Got a call today from this number saying it was the Bank of the West security dept.  Wasn't sure so I called the number on my check book.  Customer service did verify there was an attempt to used my debit card fraudelently in another state.  Actually I was pretty impressed.  They stopped the transaction and issued a new card.  This website is a great place to check, but when it comes to financial matters..................please contact your bank or financial institution to verify the number and any security concerns.  I am really glad I checked it out.

This is NOT A SCAM. I received a call from this number and they wanted to verify one of the transactions on my PayPal debit card. I was travelling and they asked me whether I used my debit card at a gas station in a different state, which I actually did. When I told them that I did, they thanked me for verifying the information and hung up. They did not ask me any other information such as credit card numbers, address, etc. So I don't think this is a scam at all.

They called me after I made a large purchase from Home Depot the same day wanting to verify the transaction. Did not ask for any personal info except my name. This is not a scam, you people are being paranoid. I appreciate this service.

...and might I add that if you are concerned, call your bank directly about this. I hate to see people get riled up for nothing.

This is a legitimate call. They contract with various banks and credit cards to verify purchases. The first time they called my son there were 3 fraudulent charges. The second time, two months later, he had just ordered tires online and that was a non typical way for him to make purchases. The bank verified they contracted with them to track questionable purchases. They only ask the last four digits  of your card and verify your name. Then they list about the last 6 or so transactions and verify they are charges you made. If  any are fraudulent, they freeze the card and instruct you to get a new one from your bank/credit union.

They left a message on my voicemail that they were from the fraud protection department from my bank. They had the right bank and said there was supicious activity on my account. My bank has a very good fraud protection department and they have called before about unusual activity on my account, so I called the number back. But this time it was different. They said there was an attempt to use my debit card for a gas purchase at a station I never heard of for $11. Nobody buys gas for $11 anymore. But anyway, the first red ight was that the phone number was the same as the one they called from on the caller ID. I thought that was strange. Usually the call back number is different. Then when I was talking to this guy he asked me my phone number, my address, and my card number. They had my phone number because when I refused to give them info over the phone he said they would have to cancel my card. I told fine cancel it. If someone else was really using it I wanted cancelled. Then he said "we will cancel your card ending in" and used the last four digits of my phone number. He never had my card number. This was a scam trying to get my card number. I went straight to my bank and their fraud protection department had no record of that call and my card had not been cancelled. The fraud protection department from your bank will not ask you a lot of questions. After you identify yourself, they will let you know what has happened on your account that they feel may be fraud and then they will let you know what they can do to help you. They do not ask for your account number or card number. Report these calls and don't give them any information.

It looked very suspicious when we got a call from a blocked number asking us to call 800-830-8574.  They have an automated system and ask for your phone number and the last 4 digits of your card.  I refused to give them any information about my card or my phone number.  I even called from a different phone.  The lady that answered the phone was polite and understood why I would not give them any information.  We called our bank directly and they confirmed there was a charge that was declined and a flag put on the account.  The charges were out of state and WERE NOT OUR CHARGES.  So it seems this is a LEGITIMATE service the banks are using to contact people about suspicious charges.  I just don't understand why they are doing it from a blocked number.  If you get a call from this company you can decide if you want to give them any info but AT LEAST CALL YOUR BANK because it is probably for suspicious charges on your account.

I've gone through this process twice.

Short Answer: THIS IS COMPLETELY LEGIT AND NOT A SCAM.

The first time was about the bank's suspicion of fraudulent activity, and the second time today, when several fraudulent transactions were found.

The phone number goes to to a company that handles fraud detection for several banks.  THEY WILL NOT ASK YOU FOR ANY SENSITIVE INFO.  They'll list several transactions, with date, merchant name & merchant location, asking you if they're legitimate transactions.  If they're not, then appropriate action will be taken to protect your account.

For those who call this a phishing attempt, you need to do more research, learn how phishing works, and stop spreading false information.

This is a legit company called "First Data" who does third party security. Received a call tonight regarding the debit card associated with my checking account. They wanted to check on some suspicious charges. I hit 0 until I got to speak with a live operator. Didn't have to give her any info other than my phone number and name and she told me about a suspicious charge on my Northwest Savings Bank Visa Debit. I didn't recognize the charge and the woman on the phone put a hold on my card and advised me to contact my bank tomorrow.

Think about it, if they already had my card number, why would they bother to call me and go through recent transactions on the card? Oh, right. The scammers will probably move to my area and use my card where I usually shop so it doesn't seem out of the ordinary.

    This is NOT a scam.

I received a call from this number. They told me it was to verify recent charges on my local credit union's visa card. They named the last 2 transactions and confirmed that they were not fraudulent. I didn't give them any information other than to verify what they told me.  This is a legit service (from my experience).

Call came from "Unknown", but a voicemail was left with this number to call back.  This is a legit company that verifies recent transactions on your account to check for fraud.  When I called, I didn't even speak to a person--just a computer-generated voice.  The voice listed 5 recent transactions and their respective dollar amounts; the voice isn't really specific (i.e. "A transaction in the amount of $4.74 was approved on or around October 22 at a fast food restaurant"), so I found it useful to have my account pulled up on the computer to see the names of places.  I only had to press "1" to verify the transactions.
