They left messages on my mother-in-laws phone to call immediately regading fradulent activity. Since the phone number used to be mine, she was worried. I called and got a recording "card services" - and to enter the phone number. (I did) and the last four digits of my credit card (What credit card? They never say a name...) so i entered in "0000". It transferred me to a person who asked for my name (I made one up) and then said "Oh, we were looking for a Scott Schmidt". I said I didn't know anyone about that name. He apologizd and said he would remove my name from their list. This operation is sketchy at best... certainly didn't have one ounce of legitimacy to it.

I received a message from this number identified as "PayPal Security" and was asked to call to verify a transaction on my Mastercard.

I checked my PayPal account online and everything looked okay.  Just to be safe, I contacted PayPal directly from the number posted on their website.

The PayPal representative said 1-800-830-8574 was indeed legitimate, and that although we had discussed the transactions and agreed everything was okay, I still needed to make the return phone call to PayPal Security in order to close out the inquiry.

Got a call from this today... verified the last 4 or so transactions (which happened to be hostels and flights I booked overseas for the summer) and everything was perfect. I looked it up just in case it was "phishy" and was really surprised by the amount of negative comments on the board.

So, as a precaution, I called directly Wells Fargo's credit card services and asked about it. They said that today on my account there was a note that said to call the customer (me) and that the transactions in question had been verified 20 minutes prior. Certainly gave me the answer I needed...

Not quite sure whose paranoid/who really got screwed on this board. Best thing to do (although sad for humanity) is to make that call to the bank and verify that there was a note on your account to check for fraudulent activity. Then you can be assured.

PayPal apparently uses this company as well.

Minus many points on PayPal's side for not putting information about this company on their website.  Minus many point on this company's side for not telling you *anything* about who they are or what they do before asking for information.

My card number had been stolen a week  ago and I had canceled my card.  I received my new card today and activated it.  Several hours later I received a voicemail from this number telling me that there had been several suspicious charges made to my account.  I called the number back.  They wanted to verify my phone number (the number they read back to me was not mine).  I gave them my correct phone number and was transfered to a representative.  The woman told me about the charges (which were not my own) and asked me to give her the last four digits of my new card (i gave it to her).

I went directly back to my bank and spoke with the manager who told me that he had no idea who this number/ company was.  They even called the number back and looked it up online.  Obviously my bank has no association with this company (scam).

If you are posting on this page and trying to defend the legitimacy of this so called company I am inclined to believe that you are either working for them or delusional.

Not sure about some of your issues, but they were straight up with me. It has kinda been outlined in other posts, but it seems that like usual not all departments (most likely including your bank manager) know about all the third party companies involved, but I was glad to hear from card services to assure that I spent the money I spent. The paypal person I spoke to confirmed it, however some talked to paypal people who don't. Just make sure you talk to a live person, they never needed any personal info from me, just confirmation that I spent the money. I am getting annoyed by the idiots who assume that they aren't legit because things went wrong with them, and of course I must work for the company... please, I wish, it would probably be a raise compared to what I'm making now.

This service is "Falcon" - a credit card anti-fraud service from your debit/credit card issuer. All they want you to do is confirm recent transactions on your account (automated). They ask for the last 4 digits of your card # - and sometimes zip code of the billing address.  My credit union (sunmarkfcu.org) uses them - and this morning I found out Paypal is also using them.  http://www.fico.com/en/Products/DMApps/Pages/Falcon-Fraud-Manager.aspx   If you do NOT verify the charges - or don't answer their call, you WILL find your card privileges suspended.

Not a scam, this one is real folks, and I'm happy for it. It's covered my butt a couple times.

HappyCustomer, are you crazy? If someone stole your card, assuming they had a way to get these phone messages they could just as easily confirm everything was legit.

I guess that's a little far fetched but back in the day they used to do this manually with real people on the phone, other banks still do it. These automated things are a joke, so they're gonna suspend everything if you don't reply but what if they do. Do the purchases in question get charged back?

Just another system putting hard-working americans out of work, so the banks can continue to get bailout after bailout. Wouldn't a real person be better at verifying contact information then an automated system asking if you are this person?

I got a call from this number saying they were verifying activity on my Paypal account.

Bottom line:  it seems to be legit.       Details:

They announce "You have reached Card Services."  They (the automated voice) asked me to "dial" in the last 4 digits of the card and the phone number that they had called earlier.  Then THEY asked ME to verify that my name was correct (good).  And then THEY asked ME to verify the online charge I had made--giving me both the amount (although the amount was rounded off to the nearest dollar, so it wasn't exact) and the company I bought it from (also good).  I say these two things are "good" because I didn't have to give them the info.  If they are legit and are just checking on a charge, I shouldn't have to give them this info - they should already have it.

Now maybe I'm naive, but I can't think of a way they could use the last four digits of a card and my phone number (which they clearly already had) against me.  A scammer would have to have the full card number and expiration date.

BTW, I used Paypal's browser plug-in to generate a secure, a one-time use card because it was the first time I dealt with the website I was buying from and I didn't want to give out my "real" credit info.  So even if someone wanted to scam the card info from this transaction they wouldn't be able to use it anyway.  It was only good for one transaction.

This one-time use card is a great service provided by Paypal.  If you're interested in it, go to paypal.com and search for their browser plug-in.  You download it, and it places a Paypal tool on your browser.  When shopping online and at the checkout page, you click on "generate secure card" and it gives you a one-time use Mastercard number, complete with expiration date and CCV number.  It acts like a debit card on your Paypal account so you have to have the cash in your bank account in order to use it.  (There may be a way to have it charge against a "real" credit card listed in your Paypal account, but I don't know how and haven't investigated this.)

P.S.  I agree with tudza.  How hard would it be for Paypal to put some kind of announcement on their website assuring their customers that phone calls from this number are legit?  And how hard would it be for this company to give their exact name in their automated message so you could look them up on BBB or something like that?  Why all the secrecy?  If it's meant to be a good service provided by Paypal - then let customers feel comfortable with the service by giving them reassuring information.  It's such a hassle to go through all of this investigation to find out if it's legit or not!!!

I just got off the phone with them. I did not enter any info, waited approximately 3 minutes, and spoke with a person who asked only for the phone number they left the message on and to verify my first and last name. She then asked me to verify the last five charges on my PNC Debit Card - she already knew the DATES, LOCATIONS, AND AMMOUNTS. If this was fraud, they would already have all my info, and wouldn't need to call to check. This is legit.

It's not a scam. It's just your credit card company trying to confirm your recent transactions. I had made several purchases and I guess they were just making sure they were all me. I called them back at the number, gave them the information and reviewed my transactions. It was really easy and all was legit.

Are these 'believers' that dumb? These people are very crafty and of course they know all the transaction detail. Thats how they operate. They are hacking Paypal and other places. They called me about Paypal secure plug in and an AMEX card that has not been used in 5 years. Do not talk to them period.

I too got a call from this number and they left a message that said that they were calling to verify potential fraud charges on my card.  I called the number and the automated system identified itself as Card Services.  It asked for the last 4 didgits of my card (I just entered 0000's and then a random combination of rour numbers when that did not work).  This transferred me to a representative. When I spoke with a representative I asked for their website and she gave it to me. (http://www.firstdata.com/index.htm) The company is also called Falcon.  I also called my credit card accounts dept with my bank Wells Fargo and spoke with the fraud dept.  They said they do have third parties that make these calls for them. The fraud dept. was able to verify that there was suspected fraudulent use on my card.  The number is valid and they are apparantly subcontracted to many companies. You can see on their website all of their services and that financial institutions are part of who they market their services to.

I received a call from 800-830-8574 regarding possible fraud on my account. I called the phone number and spoke to a rep. I was a little skeptical of the message and thought it was a scam. I called PNC and they put me in contact with VISA card services since it was a Debit card.  They were able to verify that the call was legitimate. The phone number is valid and belongs to a third party outsource agency that sends out mass messages for several financial companies.  BUT, my rep told me to ALWAYS contact the bank on your own to verify if they are trying to alert you about fraud.

I got a call from this number and found out that it was verifying a credit card pushase when I used PayPal's Plug-in temporary CC. The amount was $59 but was suspicious because the first time I entered the card info for the merchant the card was rejected due to "incorrect data". I checked and found out that the check used was rather brainless - it tried an address match and failed because the upper case was used in PayPal's records, and I had entered lower case for the merchant. I logged into Paypal, figured out what happened (I couldn't believe they would ever allow case to cause a mismatch) then reentered the CC adress info at the merchats so that the case matched PayPal's adress on record. Then the CC authorization went thru OK. The next day I got a call for 8008308574 and when I called back I verified that I was the one who had made the puchase and that it was legit. End of story.
