- BarryYes, got a call from this number asking for varification on a recent purchase on my pay pal account master card (first time ever for this)and asked for my last 4 digits to my credit card number. Of course I didn't give it to them but waited on line to talk to a represenitive. A recorded message picked up and asked me for my phone number 2 times and then said to please call back when I had a better connection. SCAM!! Beware of these callers. Do not give or enter any info to these guys.

- not.fooledThis number was left by a recorded voice claiming to check on recent card activity by my recently deceased aunt -- all of whose cards I canceled within days after her death. (She never lived with us or used this phone number, though her snail-mail address was changed to mine as I'm her executor.) When I called, another recorded voice said they'd traced the number I was calling from, and recited it correctly -- spooky! -- to "ensure no fraudulent activity" was happening on MY end of the call-back. Then they asked for the last four digits of her card; which, of the two dozen cards she held? Even if this company (which never identified itself) were legitimate, there's no way I could follow it up, given the limitations of their phone tree.

- reallymadGot the same call after making a PayPal online purchase with a one time use SecureCard from PayPal for about $50. Called PayPal Security and was told this sounds suspicious. After 5 min hold came back on the line and said this is a 3rd party verifier PayPal uses. I went off on them. Why do they need to verify a one time use card that they issued after I had to log into the account several times along the way. It can't be used again! Involving an outside 3rd party only makes me feel that PayPal is MUCH less secure than I suspected already. I did not / will not call that number for verification esp. since the transaction has already been completed and the item shipped!!

- anonymousI believe this call is legit just as the comments made some time ago. I just responded to it and then searched for the number online and came to this site. I wouldn't have called it but after reading positive comments... confirm with those individuals that it is legit. I only gave the last 4 of card number and the phone number to which I received the message and they read back different transactions / locations that I have made purchases within the past few days. Who else would know this other than your bank. If it was a thief, why would they need you to confirm the transactions? It may be different if they asked you the pertinent information... but since they provided it, it was authentic.
- Fraud DetectionHaha, so after reading all of the comments on this, I felt I needed to clarify.
I actually work for the company that makes the calls. We are a third party verification department known as FIRST. DATA. The banks hire us to flag possible fraud on the account to ensure no one is stealing your money. Most banks we do for consists of, but not limited to: Wells Fargo, U M B, Bank of The West, Schools 1st Federal Credit Union, Paypal, Mission Federal Credit Union, Amalgamated Bank of Chicago, etc. It is also known as the FALCON program (what it stands for; don't know.)
It is legit, all we ask for is the phone number we called and your name. If we have a wrong number on file we may ask for your card number (to make it easier on us) otherwise, we can simply do a name search as long as you provide the last four-digits of the card.- Caller: First DAta
- KenThis number is legit. They had a weird transaction on my account and I confirmed it.

- ClaudioThis is not a scam, it's a machine from a company calling to confirm transactions (Transaction review department on behalf of paypal). The message said it was a paypal verification. I called back and a computer voice asked me to confirm the telephone number the message was left, the last 4 digits of my card, and the last 3 transactions (amount and place I used it), I don't believe they can do much with only that information.
- Caller: transaction review department
- consumerThis is definitely not a scam - I made several large purchases with my debit card and my bank was obviously trying to verify the transactions before they released the funds. When I called the 800 number in the message, I was connected to a rep who asked me for the phone number they called and my name (no card numbers at all). They ran down the last four or five transactions on my card and asked me to verify each one. The whole call took less than a minute. I appreciate this kind of service because I've had problems with card fraud in the past.

- Trisha HunsakerA computer generated voice said they were calling on behalf of America First Credit Union regarding my recent Visa credit card transaction and to call them back.

- Leonard DixonGot a call from this number. a recorded voice told me they were checking on some suspicious activity on my credit card. I was put on hold for a while but I hung up. I had just used a paypal secure card to order somthing
- JJReceived a call this morning from 800-830-8574 asking me to call to verify activity on my credit/debit card. I called them back from a different phone number and did not reply to the automated voice prompts. When a young woman (very polite throughout the call) answered and asked for the number where I had received the original call, I stopped her and asked, "Who is Card Services" the name they originally answered with. She replied that the company is "First Data" and that they are a credit card verification and fraud protection company hired by your bank to verify the last 5 transactions on your account to be sure that they were made by you. That's all fine and good, but since I have not experienced any problems, I told her I was uninterested. This is the part I didn't appreciate.... She politely informed me that I would begin experiencing issues with using my card if I didn't participate because a "hold" would be placed on it meaning each purchase would have to be verified as I make a purchase! Guess I'll participate. Don't think it's a bad thing, just don't like being forced!

- SharI'm not giving anyone my information. If they are a REAL business they would have their Business name and address on the internet. I just don't trust anyone.....
- SharJJ-Dont do it...
- Renee'Received a voice mail on my phone that said they were calling from the Transaction Review Department on behalf of PayPal for recent transactions on my Mastercard. I don't have a Mastercard. I did use the Paypal Secure Card (generate # for 1 transaction only).
It didn't sound legit to me, so I called PayPal directly. The rep checked and said no one had called me and verified there was no problem on my account. She told me to disregard the call. Then I found this thread with the pros and cons abounding.
I think I'll still follow her advice for now. If it's legit, they'll call back.

- Charles LoweryComputer generated call telling me to wait to talk to someone about recent credit/debit card transactions. I have an unlisted number, and the call was not from my bank. Scammers obviously. I hung up.
- samIt is a good number. Wells Fargo called to determine if my unusual account activity was valid or not.

- JudyReceived a call this morning =-- computer generated voice asking me to hold for operator to verify recent transactions on my PayPal Mastercard. The person who came on identified herself by name, asked for me by name, then read off transaction dates and amounts. She did not ask me for any personal information.
- KyleeIn response to scam watcher - 16 May 2008 who said, "This is absolutely a SCAM and the rosy messages on this board are probably left by the scammers. Think about it. Why would someone take the time to look for a message board and post about a number they had a good transaction with???"
I think people who are wary of giving information to or taking a call from a number that they don't recognize would look up information just as you did when you found this site. That's what I did anyway. I checked my CC and bank websites and saw no suspicious transactions, but wanted to check and see what the advisor at this number had to say. After reading through mixed comments, I decided to give the number a call to see what they had to say, but decided not to give any identifying information beforehand.
I called, an automated system confirmed my phone number and asked for the last four digits of a card number. I didn't know which card it was looking for, so I just typed one of them in and the system said it couldn't locate my account and transferred me to a specialist. The gentleman I spoke to asked me to confirm my phone number once more. He then asked my name. That was ALL the info he asked for, because once I answered, he told me that the call was related to someone else's account who had apparently not updated their telephone number. He said he'd remove the number from her file (someone who had the last name Cruz) and ended the call.
Back to my response to what scam watcher - 16 May 2008 said, I am not leaving a review because I had a good experience and was looking for a place to write about it. I was nervous, did some investigation, and found a lot of people calling this a scam. From my experience, it certainly doesn't seem to be that way. If it was, they wouldn't have cared if I was who they thought I was, they'd have scammed me just the same. Most importantly, I wasn't asked for any information that could have compromised one of my accounts.
Certainly be wary, but not overly paranoid. If someone asks you to confirm the CCV or security number from your card, don't. Banks do NOT need that information to speak to you (I worked at a bank call center and couldn't even have confirmed a security number back to a customer because we couldn't see it). They should have information about you, since they're the one's calling you, so you can ask them to confirm your name to you, for example, to confirm it's not a scam. If they want some information you're not comfortable giving, you can always hang up. Check with your bank, or CC issuer. I would have preferred to do that directly, except that I didn't know which card they were calling in regards to. I called them to find out and was told it wasn't even my card, so that's one less thing I have to worry about. - jdaReceived a call from this number. Automated message stated they were calling to verify a PayPal transaction. When I called back, the automated system didn't identify the firm I was calling and asked if the number I called from was the number I received the call at. It wasn't. Rather than give them any more info, I hung up and called PayPal directly. A supervisor for PayPal told me there were no issues with my account and that they had not called me.
I don't know if this is a scam, or just a poorly run outbound operation. I'm going to report it as fraud and let the State Attorney General sort it out.- Caller: Unknown
