Just because the caller ID shows the number is from AT&T collections doesn't mean that is who it is actually from. Callers can fake their caller ID number (Caller ID "Spoofing"). AT&T indeed does call their customers about late payments, but I think there are very active scammers out there that are taking advantage of this fact and pretenting to be AT&T.  Just because you happen to be late with a payment doesn't mean that it is actually AT&T calling.  It could be just good luck on the part of the scammer.  Don't give any information to someone who calls you. Hang up and call the billing department directly and check.

I've been getting calls from "AT&T" about past due billing for my phone number that is not even an AT&T number. When I call AT&T they say I'm fine and they don't know why I'm being called.  I think AT&T must know that there is a major scam effort underway, but does not want to make it public knowledge as it would be bad PR for them.

I called this number and the woman who answered said the number that had this call placed to it was not in the system.  She said she was sorry and that it could be a technical error.

Then I called at&t's main customer support number ( 1-800-331-0500) and the first CSR wasn't sure why I was getting called since i have no account and he couldn't find my name or number anywhere.  Then he transferred me to another person and this person suggested that an AT&T customer may have listed me as a "contact" and that AT&T may have been calling this "contact" regarding reaching someone who does have an AT&T wireless account.

That second CSR took my name and number and she said that in 24 - 48 hours my number would be deleted from the system and I shouldn't receive any more calls from this number.

    I hope it works!

I received several calls before. I checked my ATT bill and it is already paid.
Today I received another one. This time, there is a lady talking on the phone asking for some one whose name is unknown to me. I said no such people is related to this phone. So they asked: what number is this. And I told them because I thought they are with ATT. Then they asked: what is your name. And again I told them. Then I asked them to delete this stranger's name. After that I felt worried. I believe there is something wrong with this number. I shouldn't have told them my information.

I get a call from this number twice each morning between 9am and 11am CST.

I'm on  Sprint, and always have been for the 10 years I've had a cell phone.  I've never even had AT&T for home service. So either they have my number by mistake, or this is a scam.

I am tending towards the scam, because I started getting calls like this a couple of weeks ago, same time of morning, same number (I think) and at that time they were claiming to be someone else offering financial advice.

If you call them back you should be very careful about what information you hand them.  If this is truly AT&T, then with your number they should be able to do 1 of 2 things: call up all of your account information, or remove you from their call list if your number isn't registered to AT&T.

i don't owe AT&T any money so there is no reason for them to call me - and because for awhile I was getting a million calls from a recorded voice with "important information about my new wireless account," I requested to never receive calls from AT&T (AT&T apparently allows you to do that, separately from the Do Not Call list, which I am also on). So the fact that I just got one means either it's not AT&T, or AT&T is harassing me for no reason...I don't like either.

Well, I don't have AT&T.  My bill isn't even past due with my current carrier, and the message seems too generic to be a real collections agent.

If you ever have any questions about the legitamcy of a phone call like this you can call another AT&T number and ask or call your public service commission-who regulates telephone. I work for a PSC. I was looking into the legitamcy of this activity because a loved one was asked for her social when she returned the call. Never give out a social. Offer to give only the last four digets and some other form of identification. I am glad to find out this number is at least associated with who they say there are according to this website and other google searchers.

I received a call from them and I actually did owe them money, through an error. I was able to clear this up once I called and talked to the AT&T customer help representative. I would recommend calling your wireless provider, explaining the nature of their calls so that they can effectively help you. Ignoring the call is not a permanent solution.

This number calls my house all the time.  If it is Cingular or AT&T then why are they calling me?  I have NEVER had either.

I received 2 calls in 2 days from 800 947-5096.   They called my home phone and left messages both said my wireless bill was late.  I scanned the internet to see who the number belonged to, since they were calling a land line.  One of the websites that came up was AT&T and YES it is their number.  So if you did give them your SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER DON'T WORRY - THEY ARE WHO THEY SAY THEY ARE.  From their site

The scheduled payment is due on or before your due date. You will need to contact our Collections Department to make payment arrangements to avoid suspension of your service. You can reach the Receivables Management Department by calling 1-800-947-5096.

I told them on the phone my cell, home and u-verse are all current

    The number traces to:

    Cingular Wireless

    2612 N Roan St
    Johnson City, TN 37601

Seems legit, just very poorly managed.

Not sure what to think about everyone saying this is legit.  I have a pay-as-you-go AT&T cell phone with a credit balance of $111.  I don't have a monthly payment due.  There is no reason for anyone to call me to remind me to load up, because when I run out of prepaid minutes, I have to load up before I can use the phone again.  My prepaid minutes don't expire for six more months.  Yeah - I'm real suspicious of this call.

    This is a scam.
They have called me many times and its getting annoying.
    I've never had their service.
Do NOT give them any information!
Call AT&T if your worried about your account if you have one.
    This is not them, obviously.

Called at 17:09.  I did *not* say "hello" when picking up, seeing as how an 800 number has no reasonable business calling me.  After 10 seconds, they hung up.

I spoke with AT&T and they confirmed that they would not contact me by phone (I prefer by mail), so I conclude that someone did an ANI spoof to defraud wireless subscribers.

It's ATT.  Not a scam.  Just pain in the butt bill collectors saying they will disconnect your cell if you don't pay the bill.

I did not answer this call and no message was recived. After reading this page, I logged into my online account for AT&T and had a past due account do to my last payment not being received. So I because of this, I was able to correct my lost payment. Not a scam, just an annoying friendly reminder about your account status.
