This is Capital One. I use to work there. If they are calling, it's either because you are late on a bill or it's a telemarketing call. If you do not have an account with them, it's possible that the previous owner of your number had an account with Capital One. You may want to call them just to see why they are calling. If it's a telemarketing call & you don't want them to call, they can remove your name & number from the marketing list. Also, it could be possible that someone may have use your number & other personal info to open an account. The best thing to do is to simply call them to see what's going on.

I got a call 08-05-09 and gentleman asked for me by name and said was regards to Mc ending in blah blah blah blah... I interrupted him and advised i was on DNC list and to remove me. He did so very easily and apologized repeatedly for the bother. I advised was ok i know its his job but I prefer no unsolicited calls. Mail is fine since its traceable.

The issue I had was in his opening he never named the company until I asked. I know is marketing calls since its their number and I have a card with no balance owed so was fine. They just need to open up with "Hi... this is so-and-so with Capitol One..." go into reason for call and then verify info if needed. They are quite aware calls to you asking for personal info is way shady so if you are not comfortable with giving to them ask for call back number. Scammers will not give you a valid number or their number, true companies will.

somebody with henry name called me today around 2pm and told me I'm calling from capitalone and his accsent was not like normal representative. Then he asked me  we need to verify your personal information such as date of birth and address.

I told them, I'm not gonna give you my personal information, If you guys realy part of capitalone staff give me your phone number and then I find out and call you back.

He said, are you ready to write our phone number? I said no sir because I'm going to call 411 and ask about capitalone phone number by self and then call you back. He said it's ok sir.

I called capitalone an hour after done with phone number investigation and they told me we don't have any case open regarding somebody recently called you from capitalone.

So, I understood they were gonna steal my personal information.

What I'm gonna do I'm gonna let capitalone and police know about that thing.

So, I get a call from this number this morning and again just a few minutes ago.  After 5 minutes of listening to a deep bass voice asking me to be patient, a girl responds.
Girl:  Hi, this is "forgotten name" from Capital One, is Peter "Last Name" there?
    Me:  This is Peter.
Girl:  We're calling in regards to your account, can I start by asking for your account number?
Me:  Well, I didin't recognize this number, so I looked it up online (got this page) and didn't like what I read.  What are you calling about?
Girl:  I'd be happy to tell you, I just need your account number first.
Me:  Well, I never missed a payment, my account is not over the limit or defaulted.  My card isn't even close to expired.  So there's no reason that you should be calling me.  So before I decide to give my card number out to a potential scam, how about you tell me what this is about first?
Girl:  I'm unable to disclose that information...
Me: (cutting her off) Then get me someone who can or I'm hanging up this call.
Girl:  In that case, you have a nice day.  <click>

...called Capital One after reading the comment "re: activating a replacement card" and so call appears to be legitimate...I called the number on the back of the card and spoke with someone I confirmed to be a Capital One representative and my card actually did need to be "activated" ...but, the story doesn't end there...there was some sort of "issue" with their ability to "authorize" the replacement card and 35:00 minutes and three levels of assistance to locate and correct (make the balance available) the problem...

..so. thank you al,l for starting me in the right direction to repair a problem I didn't even know I had and thanks to the Grace Of God for the persistence to stay with the problem until it was remedied...

I was going to pick up, then I realized it was a 800 number and we all have been getting bombarded with unless marketing calls lately so I didn't answer. They didn't leave a message so it couldn't have been important.

I'm glad I came to this site!

Nice to know it's a scam. Next time they call, I'm going to give them all the wrong information! In fact, why don't we humor them and lets all do that!

Got call today from #. Said he was with Cap 1 and asked for my zip code to verify who I am. Told him he called me and I don't give out personal info. He said that was my choice and hung up. Sounds like a SCAM.

I have been getting the call every day for the last couple of weeks. I call back and it appears to be legitimate Capital One. They answered and it was recording with all the number options.. I kept pressing 0 until I got to a rep. He immediately asked for my card number and I told him I was skeptical after reading all the fraud comments on this site. My account is completely current, paid ahead and almost no balance, so I knew they had no reason to be calling which is what I told this rep. He said he understood and most likely it was a marketing call about new products available. He didn't push for my number and said to get them to stop calling just answer the call and see what it was about and that they would immediately remove my phone number from their list if i so desired. My feeling is that it is legitimately Capital One but it is some marketing call. I will answer the call next time they call and put a stop to it.

I have a hard time believing this is a scam number. I got a call with a voicemail on my machine today. They stated it was not a solicitation call but rather regarding fraud issues. I have put a freeze on my credit ever since I was told I was among almost 30,000 kaiser employees whose personal info was stolen through our labor union. It was clear to me then why I received a denial letter in the mail for a credit card I never applied for. They were using the address posted on my employee info to apply for a card. This was a totally separate incident from this current call from capital one. I logged onto the ACTUAL capital one website-not via a link. It also states that there is a restriction on my account and to call the 800-955-7070 number. If this was a scam, the number would not be on the actual site. Knowing that my credit accounts are frozen due to this fraud issue through my job, I am pleased to know that I get calls when something questionable arises. They are doing their job. If this is not the  case for you, the repeated and annoying phone calls are probably because you need to PAY YOUR BILL!!!

Got a call from this number today, and they hung up when I answered. Googling the number brought me here; I called the number back and it asked me for my full account number which struck me as odd. I hit 0 to go to a live person, who also asked me for my full account number. When I expressed my concern that it was a scam, the guy went into a spiel about how something could be wrong with my account and he couldn't look into it without my cc number. I let him know I was uncomfortable disclosing that information to an unsolicited caller and that I would be reporting this as a fraud attempt.

While it may not be a scam, nothing about the people on the other end of this line is reassuring that they are a legit enterprise. Beware!

This is CapitalOne calling.  They called me a few times and then I finally answered.  They were promoting their payment protection plan for around $3.00/month, it took a 5 minute conversation and they stopped calling me. I do have an account with CapitalOne.
