4 texts to 8888 on my latest Vodafone bill, fortunately so far coming out of my allowance.   Who are they, and how do they manage to initiate calls FROM my phone?
I have asked Vodafone, but no answer so far.
Also paid for receiving texts from 80432.   This should be illegal

Just got my O2 bill and found three charges of £1.25 + VAT for 3 texts from 88888, 10 seconds apart.  Queried this with O2 and the lady submitted a form to investigate.

Having read these comments I now remember trying to download a 'free' ringtone, and then getting these texts telling me it would cost me £4.50 a week to 'subscribe'.  I immediately cancelled - without downloading anything - but have still been billed for £4.50 by O2.  Why the h... are these scams allowed?!  Surely OFCOM should be putting a stop to this sort of basically criminal activity?

I got subscribed to Jamster by accidentally clicking on an advert whilst phone was in pocket. I phoned Jamster directly on 0780 1213186 and they agreed to cancel the service, block my number from further texts and send me a refund cheque. Make sure you speak to an actual person, they can deny receiving texts and emails.
Hope this proves to be useful information.

Many thanks for the posts, I looked at my daughters 02 bill tonight and saw there was over the last three months £15 per month taken from our account.  I sent a text stopall 88888 and it worked.  I also unsubscribed for all other services.  I then rang jamster on 0870 1213186 and they agreed to refund me £27.  It's not the full amount but something is better than nothing.  Please be extra careful with the kids mobile phones as they seem to get scammed so very easily.  My daughter thought the was getting free music.
This forum is very useful.  Many thanks

He probably just did what I did - Googled "free ringtone" and was directed to a webpage to download his FREE ringtone only to find out - AFTER it had been downloaded - that he had been charged.

It's an out-and-out scam that anyone who is looking for a free ringtone can be a victim of. It's not his fault.

I've done some research around this scam, and it seems to go back to 2001!

I find it absolutely incredible that Jamster are not denied access by every mobile phone network.
