Got called on my work phone this morning about fraudulent charges on a credit card with my bank.  What is suspicious is that they provided the names of people who lived at my house before I did YEARS ago.  Checked my records online and there were no pending charges on my card and no messages related.

I got an email from my credit union saying they detected suspicious activity. Told me to call this number, checked number online, looked like a scam. Checked my CU account online, saw a couple of bogus charges. Called number on back of card and talked to CU rep. She said number was legit, transferred me to security rep. He blocked bogus charges, cancelled card. I have to wait 7 to 10 days for new card. Bottom line is 1-888-918-7313 is legit. (12/29/2018 )

This was a legit call. Upon receiving a voicemail asking me to call the number back to verify some activity on my MasterCard Debit Card, I called my Credit Union first and they advised me that this was a legit call and the people calling was the company who services their debit card accounts. I'd had my expired Apple Pay card declined last night at a Cub Foods and that was why they were calling to check in.

Fraud!  I called my bank and gave them the phone number 8889187313. The bank told me it is NOT one of their fraud department phone numbers. Lot of info on dark web. Hang up and call your bank. Scammers!

This call is from a company that banks use to check that your recent purchases are legit and not fraudulent. If a recent card purchase is somehow out of the ordinary, it gets flagged by a computer and they call to verify that you the cardholder made the purchase. Their questions are used to unfreeze your card.

Thinking this number is occasionally get spoofed by scammers

This is a valid number from my credit union. I, for one, appreciate these monitoring calls as I've had my identity and debit card number stolen in the past. Repeat, this is valid. They don't ask for your number, just the last four of your social, date of birth and phone number. It is possible now days, with an app, to make calls under a different number. My grandson did it as a joke to me. Not funny.

I appreciate Provident CU to be on top of my account; my emergency contact was contacted from 8889187313, my contact got worried as it never happened before and told me to call the ph # on the back of my CC, I did and yes the phone call was made and the Representatives were very thorough, the last one even went over the last transactions and one of the charges was incorrect (it is a recurrent payment every month) and so, that payment probably made PCU to make the call.

Not true.  I received the call, they only asked if I had made a purchase this morning (I had not) and they verified the purchased I made yesterday.  They closed my card and I contacted the credit union.  Indeed my card had been compromised.  So this is totally legit.

No, this is not a "scam".
There are automated systems that flag suspicious activity and block credit cards so that when people steal credit card numbers and make fraudulent purchases, they get stopped in their tracks before they get away with too much. But, these systems are not foolproof. So, you might trigger them accidentally. This is a "false positive". When this happens, they want to make sure that you are okay and it was really you using the card and you haven't had your card stolen. That's why they call. Sometimes it is a machine calling, sometimes it is a person, depending on what system the credit card people are using. They will tell you the last few purchases that were made with the card, and then you tell them whether you authorized them or not, and if you did, they take the block off your card and you can use your card again; if you didn't, that means somebody has stolen the number or the card and is trying to make purchases and make you pay for it. (Or it could always just be a mistake in a computer somewhere, but in this sort of thing, it's usually not a computer mistake, it's the computers doing what they are supposed to.)

Don't give them your credit card number. If they are really working with your credit card company, they already know your number. That is what you have to protect. That is how you can get scammed. These people already have that information, they are trying to help you. They should just need the name of the cardholder and the phone number associated with the account, and answers to yes or no did you authorize those charges. Anything else might be a scam.

This number is a genuine number which I'm sure some scammer somewhere is usuing to make themselves appear legitimate. If you want to be sure you are calling the right number to get it fixed, use the customer service number that is printed on the card. That way, you know that the phone number you are calling really belongs to the people who work with the credit card company and not with scammers. People who just call you out of the blue and say stuff may or may not be legitimate. If you call this number, you get a legitimate security company, but if this number calls you, they might be faking the caller id. That's easy to do if you are a professional scammer.

I think that was a scam, Janet, if somebody called you from this number and asked for that information. That's how you got things stolen. If they are legitimate, they don't need that information from you when they call you. They already have it. If they are legitimate, they want to verify the charges.

You want to scam somebody, just get a caller id spoofing app, fake this number, call somebody at random, sound professional, like you're calling from a credit union security department. Ask them to verify their name, date of birth, and the last four digits of their social security number by telling you what they are, then thank them for their time. Now you can go commit identity theft. Look up their address on the internet, apply for credit cards in their name, use a post office box and a google voice phone number. Research their life and maybe you can get their credit report online if you're lucky.

You're quite an [***] if you actually do that, and I hope somebody with sufficient free time finds you and punishes you appropriately.

I once had unauthorized charges on a credit card before they even sent me the card. I also once received CDs somebody ordered in my name on my card with (presumably) crappy music from some little-known Canadian band. They were such inept thieves they didn't even get the stuff they were stealing.

We are lucky any of this whole system works at all.

Called to say they were with my credit union,that my card was on hold to please contact Carlos.I DID NOT call them I called directly to my bank  and it was a scam.BEWARE!!
