I just got this David Shaw [***] text out of the blue too. If anyone is reading this wondering whether to call them back or not - DON'T.

It's a scam, pure and simple. I know for a fact that I don't owe any company any money.

It seems that either LoveFilm (who are terrible [***] themselves), Tiscali (who aren't much better) and/or Fitness First are selling our details to nefarious scamsters like these.

I'm going to ignore it for now, but if I get another text then I'm going to phone my network provider about this.

This David Shaw gimp must have a tight schedule with his busy (probably v hairy) hands txting all these people. I got one today, i'm assuming it has something to do with Tiscali as I was with them for years up until last. If i ever come across this david shaw, i'm going to roundhouse kick him in his groin and still his phone.

I actually work for a debt collection agency (not C.A.R.S) but was recently contacted by them.

I set up a payment plan as requested and everything seemed to be fine. then 4/5 days before my agreed payment was due they phoned my mums house and started demanding money from her.  My mum is elderly and very sick.  When she said that she had no money they said they would send someone round to her door and slammed the phone down.

During this call, they not only were rude and threatening to her, they also gave her account specific information about my account which is in direct breach of the data protection act.

This company is highly unprofessional and has broken the law. i will be seeking legal advice on how to deal with them and have reported them to fitness first as well.

be careful if you are dealing with them. i dont doubt that i do owe them money, but they are rude and careless with your personal information.  You arestill within your rights to pay your money directly to the company you owe it to and completely bypass this DCA.

same thing, got a text saying call david shaw on so and so number, thought sounded a bit iffy so googled and hey presto, its a debt collection agency. i wont bother ringing them back!! catch me if they can, he he.

Just tried to call David Shaw on my work phone and they hung up on me. Then I called them again and got through half of the reference no. and they hung up on me again. I have just renewed Love film, so I guess it must be about that. Losers.

I just got the same thing as well, and stupidly I was on my way home and didn't know whether to ring or not, thought I'd ring see what the fuss was about.  The bloke asked me to confirm my address for 'data protection' (which I didn't) as I wanted to know what the call was.

'Im sorry I can't tell you who we are calling on behalf of because of Data Protection'

ha! what a joke! I bet the dumb ball doesn't even know what Data Protection is!
And if the stupid little man can't even tell me that, then I sure as hell am not giving out my details!

I am not Lovefilm user and i don t have debts...so they sent me the text whit reference number and asking to call back.
Would you call back?

i got a text message today telling me to contact this "david shaw", "urgently". I tried the number and it says the number isnt in use.....? this tells me the company was dodgy anyway? i have no debt with lovefilm but recieving a text like this is worrying to me that i owe someone else money?! i wont take any further action until they contact me in writing.

Yep, this is CARS, back up to their old tricks - they used to send these text messages with the name "David Shaw" on them, now they're using the name "Robert Parker". They're usually chasing people over outstanding Fitness First or LoveFilm accounts, or insurance policies - noteably, these "accounts" or "policies" have usually either been closed or cancelled some time previously, sometimes up to several years ago.

I've spoken to National Debtline about this company and their dodgy methods - they send vague text messages asking you to call urgently, and they use an autodialler to call people, making it look like a call from a mobile number. If you get an operator they'll say that they need to speak to you about a "personal matter" and ask you to confirm your address. DO NOT CO-OPERATE WITH THEM. It is illegal for a debtor, or debt collection agency operating on a debtor's behalf, to withhold their identity (as with the texts) or their reason for contacting you (as with the calls), and behaving like this can constitute harrassment. Don't give out any personal details on the phone - if they have your address, they can contact you in writing (which is what they said they'd do last time they called me and I refused to give them my address - no letter materialised).

I don't have any outstanding debts, nor have I had any correspondence from any likely debtors, so they're obviously scam artists out to intimidate people into parting with money that they don't owe. I'm currently in the process of making a formal complaint against them and I notice that BBC Watchdog has mentioned dodgy DCAs recently, so if you get contacted by them then check out the government's formal complaints procedures and keep everything in writing. Guys you are a godsend! I got a text from Mr Robert Parker to call them URGENTLY on 01256306797 and thought I would google this number and came to this page! I cancelled my Fitness First account AGES ago and I think this is their revenge to us.

Will anything happen if I don't pursue this call?

Whatever you do, DO NOT CALL THESE PEOPLE! I got exactly the same text, came to this website and read all the comments and decided to do my own credit check to see if everything was in order. Turns out I have no outstanding debts whatsoever and I don't owe anyone any money. These people are scammers so beware.

As of today I have not called them since I received the text and I don't intend to. I just delete the text.

I've had the same message asking to ring David Shaw and to quote a reference number.
Turns out it's for Fitness First because i haven't paid my membership while under contract for the past 5 months.  Thing is, i was working for Fitness First in Wolverhampton and the membership should have been cancelled.  Even though i don't work for them any more and the membership should have been cancelled i still wouldn't have paid to train there.  The place is dirty and unhygienic and as far as i'm concerned they have broken the contract agreement by allowing the place to drop so badly in cleanliness and hygienic standards.  Who would want to pay as much money as they want to charge for dirt?

I joined the "David Shaw Club" today, lol. I canceled an insurance policy that was automatically renewed and canceled the direct debit as well so I think my text is related to that....after reading the comments here. They won't be getting a call from me!! I'm curious though as no one seem to have responded to questions asked about what happened next after they ignored the text messages, anybody?

My daughter called me from work and said that someone sent a text the number and to call David Shaw and quoted a reference number. So I googled and saw this lot.... so texted back and said not to call them.

We have never subscribed to Lovefilm as we never havve time to watch - and anyway Sky put the films on anyway!!!
