Is it not amazing that the chief executive of cvs is mark rigby.used to be the chief executive of lambert smith Hampton a very reputable firm.this begs the question why did he leave.interesting that cvs accuse the vo of not dealing with appeals quick enough.they are the ones to blame as most of their appeals are put in on the most frivolous grounds.their fee structure is downright immoral

Multi-million pound scam fleeced small businesses

North Yorkshire trading standards officers uncovered a massive scam that fleeced tens of thousands of businesses countrywide, Leeds Crown court heard.

They were working jointly with colleagues in Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester in what is believed to be England's biggest ever trading standards operation, said Robin Spencer QC prosecuting.

He outlined how over four years five company directors used five companies to con small businesses out of hundreds of pounds each.

Each firm was operating a scam involving a promise of business rates reductions.

But the torrent of complaints from their victims, particularly in Yorkshire, prompted North Yorkshire trading standards to investigate the operations of three of the companies, which all used the name Oldfields.

Mr Spencer said that the Oldfields operation at one stage had a turnover of £8 million a year with 43,000 business customers who were conned into handing over at least £200 for no return.

And when one of the five, Jason Clarke, 32, started up the fourth and fifth companies using the name Strattons, their activities prompted the trading standards officers of Cheshire, Lancashire and Manchester to get involved.

Clarke, pleaded guilty to four offences of fraudulent trading with the Oldfields companies and two fraudulent trading offences with the Strattons companies.

Peter Hilton, 57, pleaded guilty to four fraudulent trading offences with the Oldfields companies.

John Stenson, 36, pleaded guilty to two fraudulent trading offences with the Strattons companies.

Lee Hilton, 30, unrelated to Peter Hilton, pleaded guilty to two false trade descriptions offences involving the Strattons companies as did Strattons and Co (Consultant Surveyors) Ltd.

Anthony Dardis, 31, of Birmingham, pleaded guilty to two fraudulent trading offences with the Strattons companies. All but Dardis come from Manchester.

Judge Peter Armstrong signed a bench warrant for Peter Hilton after he failed to attend court. The others will be sentenced later this week.

This is a message directed to cvs and their directors.as you have employed members with RIcs conduct your business with the ethics of the royal institute of chartered surveyors.this means don't repeatedly cold call potential customers.i know you submit tens of thousand appeals a year many times without inspecting the premises.this clogs up the system with the vo and vt with many of the appeals going nowhere.i know why you do it.simply because you feel the more appeals you put in the greater the number of success not a higher proportion.have their not been instances where the rateable value has gone up due to your appeal.inspect the premises before you put an appeal in.i know you feel that a lot of the comments on this website are treated with contempt by your company and you think that they are not bona fide complaints but I think otherwise.

We took them to court a couple of months ago. The case was heard a week ago and we won. We signed up no win/no fee in 2009 to appeal the 2005 and 2010 rateable values. They did a good job for us on 2005 and obtained a reduction in RV from £84,000 to £70,000 and we paid their fees (50% of all savings). That's what I signed up for and that's what I got, so no complaints. On 2010 appeal, they did an atrocious job (different, non-qualified) surveyor who got it badly wrong. Reduction from 101,000 to 97,000. We refused to pay their fees. I then contacted the VOA and got them to agree to a reduction to £80,500 and told CVS. They don't listen to reason and continued to claim we owed them fees for that period. When they got pushy and threatening we decided to sue for the return of Transitional Relief savings for year 2010/2011 resulting from 2005 settlement (TR is not payable at the reduced rate we agreed with the VOA). They counterclaimed for fees for the 2010 period savings. We went to court on 11 October 2013. They turned up with a boy called Paul Andrews, who calls himself "Credit Control & Legal" but who obviously hadn't done his homework and was ill-suited to the job. There was another ferret-faced weasel with him called, I think, Steve May, who runs their in-house credit collection business Steadfast Debt Collection Ltd. We sued on the basis that they had not complied with Clause16 of their contract which basically says they have to achieve a satisfactory result, and on an implied term that they had to use their best endeavours to achieve the best possible result (they admitted this). They replied by saying that they had saved us money (implying that it didn't matter how little that was) and that therefore we owed them the money. The District Judge found in our favour. He said that they had fallen far short of of what a professional firm should have achieved, bearing in mind that we had obtained a further £16,500 reduction on what they had got (£4,000). We got judgment for our claim, £460 costs and £207 interest on our TR payment.
Just remember though, that if they comply with the terms of their contract, you are probably legally obliged to pay. In the case of the 2010 RV, that will continue until 31 March 2017 and they will bill you each year until then. The basic lesson to learn from this is don't sign up in the first place for something you can easily do yourself, or if you must employ someone, they employ a local surveyor and make sure the terms are to your taste.

Blah blah.please explain this.why is the major shareholder of cvs a jason clarke.the same individual who was jailed for his involvement in strattons and oldfields who scammed many clients.the only difference now is that cvs do not charge upfront but the fees that they do charge are extortionate.far more than reputable firms like Gerald eve, lambert smith Hampton, jones Laing laselle,g l Hearn etc.these firms act in a reputable way and will not submit an appeal on a wing and a prayer unlike cvs.for cvs to call themselves the leading rates consultants is just a joke and quite hilarious.

HI, I wonder if you could help our appeal against CVS. Defended their fees calim on the basis of billing for TR but unfortunately judge found in favour of CVS, confirming that they could claim fees with regard to TR. Couldn't find details of your claim against them so that we could refer and include in our bundle. Is it possible for you to send details and anything to help to my personal email address welliguess_1@yahoo.co.uk.
    kind regards.
