Have just got back from a couple of days break with my young daughter, to discover that this company had tried ringing 4 times since yesterday afternoon. Obviously no one was in, so the call was not answered. Extremely worrying that if they try ringing again, that my daughter may try and pick up the phone thinking it's her grandma or someone else she knows on the other end.
Wish some other higher authority would do something to prevent these scammers from conning the innocents in this country.

I just got one.  I'm TPS too.

Normally, when I get calls like this I just let the phone ring out until my message handler kicks in.  This time I thought I would pick up, place the handset on the couch then go and make a cup of tea.

I don't know if it cost them a lot of money to listen to my cat snoring, but I hope so.

    E-Mail from Waitrose
    ------------------------
There are a number of telephone scams currently in operation with the criminals trying to obtain credit card details or to get you to connect to a premium rate number.

The callers claim that they are either ringing on behalf of Waitrose or from the 'Waitrose Rewards department', (there is no such department).

The ones we are currently aware of are calls to say:

    1. You have been awarded either a prize or a holiday in a competition being run in conjunction with Waitrose. You are then asked to provide credit card details to claim the prize.

    2. There is a problem with your order, please press 1 for more information.

    3. Friends or family have entered you in a Waitrose competition to win a holiday. Congratulations on your win, please press 1 for more information.

With the last two, pressing 1 connects you to a foreign premium rate number at £50 per minute.

Should you receive calls such as these or other variations, no matter how plausible they may seem, under no circumstances should you give out your details or press 1, simply hang up.

If you have inadvertently given your details you should report this to your local police as soon as possible.

Rest assured that if Waitrose were involved in a competition of this type, we would never ask for bank or credit card details or ask you to press buttons on the phone for more information.

    Regards,

    Waitrose Customer Service.

My telephone number is registered with the TPS too and I have received several of these calls recently, usually when I'm out, so I tried this site to see who else has been pestered by them.  I get the impression that they are using the TPS's listing to find the numbers to call!!  It's about time that these calls were stopped. TPS: what are you going to do about it?

Call them back on 0808 234 7528 (freephone).
Its the same as pressing 9 if you do get the call.

Then give them the same routine "Congraulations, you've been selected to receive a free cruise, press 9 now"

They really don't find the funny side!

Its an outbound blast campaign Dialled from outside the uk. This type of dialling is not permited by the DMA and ofcom unles you have an existing relationship with the calling company. Also the CLI presented when dialling 1471 is an invalid number, so again in breach of DMA and Ofcom rules. When you press 9 you are connected, at your cost, back to their callcenter in the USA, the person in the US takes your name and then disconects the line.
This record will then be sold to either debt tracking agencies or other callcenter's through out the world. If you have called them back and given  your correct name, expect a call selling you something, or a call for a debt collector. Or in the worst case your identity to be stolen. Having your number means that they have your address, and for a nominal fee can get your date of birth from the cencus database. The bad thing about this is we can do nothing about it other than complaine to ofcom and the TPS,
