Today I received a text message on my mobile it states:-

'Due to technical problems your purchase of *09/2009* has not been charged. You are now being billed 4GBP. Apologies for the delay. Help? 02032863990. This was sent by 60440
A company called Nextcard Ltd; This did not ring any bells, so I googled nextcard Ltd, and opened an item named   02032863990 -who calls me?  this explained the scam. I had tried to call the 02 number but could not get through. At the second attempt I was through to an automated voice, I pulled the plug.

I called my mobile supplier Virgin, and checked my balance, and also asked for details of my last call, it said a charge of £4 had been made by text to 700520075.
    I then eventually spoke to a person about this. The outcome was that there is nothing Virgin could do about a refund, but that they would put a type of block on my mobile so that a text could not be made to that number, and that they would also inform their security dept;
How did they get my mobile number? This is only given to family and friends. I am not sure if I contacted any company on my mobile where the number could have been lifted so beware.
If you receive a text from 60440 delete it. Don't open it, otherwise you will loose £4 as it seems that as soon as you open it the text is activated.
This is theft, £4 is not much in a single transaction, but 20,000 transactions is a lot.

I have also recieved the same text today. So i have emailed next support to ask for an explanation and requested that they contact me in the next 24hrs otherwise i will take further legal action in the hope i get some sort of response. I have also contacted watchdog so im hoping if eveyone does this then we might have something done about this. I think it must have something to do with next because i checked my bank statement online and the last card purchase i made to next was on the date stated on the text so they must be getting there information from next somehow. Because that seems a bit of a coincidence to me. Has anyone else noticed this?

Hi all, have also received the text today. I am with Vodafone and called them first before sending 'STOP' to the number - 60440. Am calling Vodafone back in the morning to see if £4 has been debited, and if so will be asking for the money back and for them to investigate the matter. I will also be providing them with the details of this thread so that they can see how widespread this scam is.

Had a good old look on Vodafone's site and discovered this bit of info

'We also provide a reporting service for anyone who thinks they are receiving messages they haven’t asked for. The service is called VSPAM and it’s completely free to use. Just forward the message that you receive to 87726 (a free number) and we’ll record on our database that you’ve received a spam message. Once we’ve collated evidence on offending companies, we’re then in a position to take appropriate action. This could range from financial penalties, to temporary or even permanent suspensions of the individual services on our network.'

I did above and received a text from VSPAM confirming receipt of text. I suggest anyone with Vodafone who has received this text do the same as the more people they have to pay back the more likely they are to investigate the scam.

Hope this helps a few of you!

There seems to be a link between receiving this message from 60440 and sending a text message previously to a number 60059 with the words CD. Although I don't remember ever sending or receiving a text from 60059 I have a record on my phone bill that I did so about a month ago. Interestingly the website forum above appears to indicate that this would have been done as part of a procedure to download software on the internet (a list of possible software items is given) and that the scam is to charge £4 which is taken by someone called netlinkinvest.com (a secured website domain).

    Quote from link above:

    "Those installers are SMS scam.
It installs the legit software but the user needs to send 1 (or more) SMS to netlinkinvest.com"

It seems that the money is then being taken at a later date with insufficient explanation...and that is the scam. Furthermore, Ericson IPX are enabling this by allowing the payments to go through their systems. It doesn't seem like the phone operators are being much help either...everyone is too many steps removed from the sneaky transaction!! SO ANNOYING AND SERIOUSLY BAD BEHAVIOUR.

They were not helpfull! They did not even seam to care. We have reported it to a crime number whitch are looking in to this for everyone. They might not be able to refund your credit but if everyone reports it then they have got more chanse of geting hold of the bugers who are doing this! The number is 08005002122. I am also going to get in tuch with watchdig and I advise everyone to do the same! Its not the fact that it is £4 its the fact that people are loosing money and are phone company's are allowing it!

I too received this text message yesterday and I rang Orange immediately, who couldn't or didn't help except to give me the phone number of Erikson IPX.  They informed me that the £4 had already been debited from my phone. I am on PAYG. May be I am naive, but what right have Orange to give a third party £4 of my money without my authorisation?  Also how do they physically give them the money.  This isn't a credit or debit card - how is it done.  Orange suggested that I get my credit below £4 so it couldn't happen again and not to top up!!!  What sort of an answer is this?  My phone would be rendered useless!!!

Apparently this scam is triggered by texting CD to 60059.  I did do this in January to download a programme off the internet but, because they wanted to charge £4, I decided not to carry on.

    industry insider
the 'scam' and it's variations explained
    http://www.google.co.uk/search?rlz=1C1GGLS_en ... o+Group+S.A.%22

    Who profits?

Your Networks debit your accounts, keep a sizeable percentage, and pass the rest on to Erikson IPX. (Erikson has the billing agreement with the UK Networks)

Erikson then share this revenue with the 'innovative' company (scammer).

Has anyone asked themselves where Ofcom are or who Phonepayplus is?

PhonepayPlus is a company that has been contracted by Ofcom to regulate (police) this 'premium rate industry'.
PhonepayPlus are funded by the 'industry' and until recently had many industry insiders sitting on it's board (Andrew Bud from Mblox for example/ google 'mblox' and 'scam')

When PhonepayPlus investigate these scams they instruct companies like Erikson to withhold revenue that the scam is generating.  It's this revenue that is used to pay any 'fines' that Phonepayplus may decide to impose.
The UK Networks (Orange and o2 etc) revenue share is never affected.

At the end of the year the fines are totalled up and pumped back into the industry by reducing the calculated industry levy (PhonepayPlus' operating costs) that is paid to PhonepayPlus.

In future when you people complain you should ask yourselves whether you are complaining to the gamekeeper or the poacher. (in fact ask yourselves where is/who is the gamekeeper).

received this reply off Orange after I spoke to them about a rogue phone transaction.
Thank you for your email about third party text messages.

I am sorry to learn that you are receiving third party text messages.  I can appreciate your concerns.

I can advise that the number (60440) is owned by a company named (Ericsson). This company supply download products, such as ring tones and logos upon submission of a text message from your phone. As with similar third party companies of this nature an initial request subscribes to regular (Ericsson) services.

Orange are not linked or affiliated with (Ericsson). They are a separate registered company and must be contacted on (01483 305530). Once connected to one of their representatives please request to be removed from their mailing list. This will ensure that you do not receive future updates.

The download company deducts charges for this type of service from your account. Although the balance is deducted from an Orange phone it is not Orange who has applied the charge.

I appreciate your concern regarding the ease with which these products can be purchased.

I am sorry that I am unable to help you further with this issue.  However, I trust this information is of assistance.

    Kind regards

    Mike

    Orange misinformation
    michael sharman,
Orange have fed you a load of BS

'The download company deducts charges for this type of service from your account'

That is absolute rubbish.  The only company that can 'deduct charges' from an Orange customers account is Orange.  The 'download company' couldn't just walk into a bank and deduct charges from some ones bank account!

    Ed,
it appears you may have been swindled by a company called Soletto Group S.A.(with the help of your Network Operator and Erikson IPX).

They all take a share of the revenue.

They have a track record of duping people into paying for 'free software'.
    http://www.google.co.uk/search?rlz=1C1GGLS_en ... o+Group+S.A.%22

The true cost is usually hidden in the terms and conditions or in very small print in faint grey lettering on a grey background.

By the time the victim realises the true cost of the software it's usually to late because they have already text 'cd to 60440' for example.

It's completely against the ASA and Phonepayplus regulations but despite this Orange, o2 and the other Networks continue to do revenue sharing business with them.

it's very important to put a complaint to the industry Regulator

Have also had the same..due to technical problems your purchase of 10/2009 has not been charged you are now being billed 4GBP Apologies for the delay. Help?02032863990.Nextcard Ltd.  When you ring the number it's an answer machine giving you an email address of customerassistuk@gmail.com.  My advise is don't email as this could set whoever is doing this with another scam for peoples email addresses. Don't know whether there is a charge yet for ringing 02032863990.

I had a text telling me my purchase of 10/2009 had not been charged due to a technical error and I was now being billed £4.00.

Called Vodafone immediately, they confirmed that I had been charged, advised me that it was a scam and credited my account with £5 straight away.

They also advised me to text STOP to the number which I did, not had anything further.

Very happy with the way Vodafone dealt with it.
