Just received a call from PC Online Masters telling me that I had a very dangerous virus and that it was their duty to help me trouble shoot it. Suspicious, I asked them to tell me what my name was and they told me my company's name. I asked them which computer as I have several. They replied with "whichever one you use most." I told them they could tell me how to trouble shoot it (knowing not to go online or allow them access to my computer in any way but more to humour the process and see what was up). They told me to go to "Start" and I told them I was using a MAC. At this point (after being very sure they had the right person "in danger of a virus" on the phone) they told me they must have the wrong info because it was only for PC's. I asked for their phone number and a fake number (1 800 258 1593) was given to me.

We had a telephone call today from a 'Steve' from 'Windows' in Luton who gave the number 02953144 2618. He said we had a virus and 'our account would be closed unless it was fixed'.

    Clearly a con:
    1) How does he know I have a computer?
    2) How come he is monitoring it!
    3) There is no company 'Windows' that is associated with Microsoft and that rings you up

Short answer is 1) He doesn't and 2) He isn't.  They work on probabilities. According to "You've been Scammed", BBC1, 21st November, these people will install malware/spyware on the computer if given remote access.  Any money they ask for to "fix" nonexistent faults seems to be a diversion to hide what they are really doing.  The only ask for money after they have got the remote access.  The Director of Security for Microsoft said, on the same programme, that neither Microsoft, nor its partners, would ever 'phone you.  It would be a breach of their privacy rules.

MAU 097764 -  P C Master - Luton  rang my elderly brother on 17th December claiming he owed them a mainenance charge for software on his computer this was after he told him he no longer used his computer as he had suffered a stroke last year - they told him that he had signed up for a 5 year contract  and if he wanted to cancel he needed to pay them £360 - they were asked to supply t&c and copy of the signed contract in the post but they made the excuse that they only did things on-line and wanted him to turn his computer on but we were unable to do this as the computer has been boxed up since his stroke - as my brother felt threatened he made the payment but the family is in contact with the tradng standards and action fraud - P C Master are obviously people who obtain money from vulnerable people and need to be stopped!!

Had a call at lunchtime today from a chap with a heavy Indian accent
he said hello Dowling and I asked where he was phoning from - he said Luton
Had the story about trojan virus and that he was working for world wide web server
It was a support call because I had original Microsoft Windows
He wanted me to run MSCONFIG and look things that weren't running.
I'd looked up Luton and Trojan virus on my phone by then (computer was off).
So I asked him for his address - I wasn't sure if he was working at home.
He said there were a hundred people there
    It was 6 H- Luton
He said that there was no phone number as they were computer generated and he had no postcode.
I asked him for the name of his boss and he said John Smith
I laughed and said was it Jamil Khalid? He said Jamil was in the States and he liked to be known as John. I asked if he was online PC Masters and he denied it - said they were an affiliate

I asked what he wanted and he said log in with ID 353569102 on the ammyy website - which I didn't do. He also suggested I look at the RunVMS website . He then rang off.
Very frightening for people who know little about their computers

My oldman had the same yesterday from on line PC masters, they tried it on me months ago when I was working from home. Indian chap (don't have many indian friends so I thought this is funny) told me i have problems with my PC and he works for microsoft! I asked him if he could see inside my PC then what opperating system am I using..he said windows 7, Vista or XP! I said you haven't narrowed it down much thats all of them!...increasingly agitated he kept saying its your hard drive I then said which PC as I have both my works on and my home one switched on! this threw him and after hesitating he hung up!
Unfortunatley my dad was not so fortunate yesterday and remotley they have installed CC cleaner, Malware byte and god knows what else.?? They also gained access to his e-mails...he simply gave the "microsoft" employee his password. Therefore everyone in his address book has now received spam including me! Oh and they took £167.40 for a 3 year subscription! - thank the lord he paid by credit card!
Any ideas what other crap they install?? as I am now thinking of a full rebuild of his PC as Norton is not picking up anything?

I have recently been contacted by a different version of this scam

They tried to get me to download files from logmein123.com
and from www.ammyy.com supposedly to get access via remote support.
I kept them on the phone for almost 2 hours, by pretending to be stupid
and having difficulty understanding their asian accents. Eventually I
suggested they call me back after I had consulted with an experienced friend.
Boy o boy, were they persistant ! but they spent 2 hours for zero.

Beware these people are still around...I had a bill of £307 from Global Express Services on my Marks and Spencer Credit card in March this year. Obviously I have disputed this transaction but have to wait 60 days for a result of the investigation.  I have had numerous calls saying there is a problem with my Windows...I always ask who is calling but never get a proper answer..however my Husband answered a call today and was told in a strong asian voice that they needed to talk to me about Windows and they were Global computer services. I did fall for one of these scams some years ago and wonder if my details have been passed on...changed my credit card etc. but wait with baited breath.

    November 3rd 2012.
Called twice. First time (some bloke with an Indian accent) 'alerts' being sent in - PC infected with a Trojan. They would 'help' me get rid of the virus.
Followed along for a while. Got me to type in MSCONFIG and click on SERVICES. They told me all these stopped services were indicative of the action of the Trojan. Went through every line of stopped services reading the detail - I think they thought they had a sucker.
Anyway, lost interest and decided to shout a few obscenities at the thieving swine who was trying to con me. He rang off pretty quickly
Following this another rat (again with an Indian accent) called. Announced that she was 'Windows support' and that she was following up on a problem on my PC. Asked her aggressively for details of her connection with Microsoft. Think she got the message - she hung up.
    • Caller: Gibberish initially then Windows support.

Phone call on Wednesday April24th 2013 from (a-hard-to-understand)an Indian man pertaining to
be from a Company called 'onlinetechguyz' who would cure my Computer , which is running very
slow. Unfortunately I went along with it, he said that the computer had several viruses and that he
would cure it there and then, after about an hour of being on the phone with him and letting him
have the access to the computer, he said that it was now cured and that it would be at a cost of
around £50 so unfortunately I went along with the whole scam and gave him my credit card
numbers etc. The following morning I discovered that the computer was not fixed and they had
taken £83.45 from my account. Their UK telephone No. is 0208 144 1094 , the support desk is
www.onlinetechguys.com and their head office is Online Tech Guyz,PO BOX 97562, DUBAI,
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES. All this info was on an e-mail that I saw the following day. I tried to
cancel the money going out of my account but it was too late and it had already been taken. I
have since found out that it is a Scam that has been going on for several years and the Police are
unable to put a stop to it when they have been informed. All must be aware of this disgraceful
scam which it seems targets the vulnerable.

As you gave them remote access you need to get your computer checked out loclly.  The scammers want remote access to install spyware/malware to steal personal information like bank details and passwords. No-one who 'phones like this knows anything about your computer.  They don't know your ISP or your IP.  They don't even know what version of Windows you are using.  Giving remote access to your computer is like handing your wallet to a stranger in the street.
