Cold calls for health supplements, 50 years of Beeching and fare dodging
Duration: 55 minutes
First broadcast: Monday 25 March 2013
Consumer affairs with Julian Worricker. Today: the company that sends health supplements to the elderly, charging hundreds of pounds, whether they want them or not. Fifty years of Beeching's cuts to the railways - we'll be hearing what the impact of those cuts was and how many of the lines that were closed are reopening, and the protestors who advocate fare dodging on public transport.

- Bali Bailey| 19 repliesDear All,
Due to an internal review of processes that has been spanning the past 3 months and the broadcast on Radio 4 today we have terminated the Head of Sales, Mahesh Matta, with immediate effect.
Mahesh Matta was autonomous and solely responsible for the call centre operations and we believe that his removal will allow us to move forward positively.
Despite what may be believed on here we are a reputable company with a significant amount of satisfied customers.
We look forward to ringing in these changes with a fresh start. Don’t forget, the easiest route for dispute resolution is to email complaints@sandawellbeing.com
Kind regards
Bali Bailey

- Ajit Patel - Another fraud trial? replies to Bali Bailey| 18 repliesYes we can't let Ajit Patel carry the can as the Managing Director and owner of Natural Wellness Products Ltd now can we? Nice scam, keep up the scamming and feigning innocence. You are all common criminals. 45 pages of complaints spanning years and the Goldshield NHS scam carry more weight than your words ever can. Empty promises, repeated over and over. Nothing will change until the entire criminal operation is disbanded in the UK and India and all the perpetrators are put on trial for fraud.
Don’t forget, as you heard on Radio 4, the easiest route for dispute resolution is to contact the BBC.
Like the listener who wrote in, you will receive an immediate refund.
Media savvy is Scam savvy :-)
PS: When will Ajit's date of birth be corrected at companies house? - Nan replies to Ajit Patel - Another fraud trial?| 17 repliesIf you believe the Bailey thing's post you will believe in fairies. "Problems over the last three months" Does it think we can't read. These rats have been scamming the elderly for years, not months. Do we believe they have terminated anyone's employment - do we h*ll! Does the person they are supposed to have fired even exist? Have we seen the end of the scamming 'phone calls? I doubt it. The only sad thing is that the programme was only on Radio 4 instead of Watchdog. Did you know that this crew are up for some "new business award" in Crawley? They are also claiming to be endorsed by Care UK. I have e-mailed Care UK and asked them if they know about the selling practices of these con artists.
- SANDA SCAM EXPOSED ON BBC RADIO 4 replies to NanAjit and Susan won't like that. He's very vain and this award will make him look legitimate. At last. Or it could of. The Crawley rag seem to have got hold of the Sabda Ajit Patel scamming story? Who tipped them off?!?
- Grandad replies to Nan| 15 replies"Only on Radio 4"???? You and Yours has 3.5 million listeners.... A sensible mind would think that is quite a lot and yet there seems to be no repercussions???
Because of that I would suggest then that the 'problem' Nan is trying to create is not as bad as this forum is trying to make out.... - Ha! replies to Grandad| 8 replies

FOUNDERS QUIT AS GOLDSHIELD SETTLES NHS CLAIM
(22 June 2007)
The Directors of Goldshield, Ajit & Kirti Patel, have agreed a settlement with the NHS which had brought charges against the group for alleged anti-competitive cartel conduct in connection with the supply to the NHS of generic drugs. Under the terms of the settlement Goldshield have agreed, without admission of liability, to pay the NHS the sum of £4 million.
The pharmaceutical group added that chief executive Ajit Patel and chief operating officer Kirti Patel have decided to resign to focus on the case with the Serious Fraud Office (SFO). Finance director Rakesh Patel has been named the new chief executive.
The Department of Health called in the Serious Fraud Office (SFO in 2002, alleging that six companies colluded to limit the supply and inflate the prices of penicillin-based antibiotics and the blood-thinner Warfarin between 1st January1996 and 31st December 2000.
On 10 April 2002, officers of the Metropolitan Police Fraud Squad, executed search warrants at a number of residential and business addresses in England, Scotland and Wales. It was one of the biggest single operations carried out by the SFO, more than 200 officers raided 11 homes and 16 business addresses - including Ajit Patel's house and Goldshield's Croydon offices - seizing files and computer equipment.
The six pharmaceutical companies involved were:Generics UK Ltd, Kent Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Regent-GM Laboratories Ltd, Goldshield Group Plc, Norton Healthcare Ltd, a subsidiary of Ivax Corporation and Ranbaxy (UK) Ltd, a subsidiary of Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. In April 2005 Ranbaxy agreed to pay the NHS £4.5 million and to provide co-operation in the context of the ongoing proceedings.
AJIT & KIRTI PATEL TO STEP DOWN
Goldshield Group plc further announced today that it had completed its strategic review. As a result, the Group is to focus upon its core activity Pharmaceutical and Healthcare businesses. Rakesh Patel is to become the Chief Executive and both Ajit Patel and Kirti Patel have decided to resign to focus their attention upon the case with the SFO. Goldshield's board is to be strengthened by the appointment of a new finance director and two new non-executive directors. The group plans to sell certain Indian business and assets and the pharmaceutical division is actively seeking to acquire new products.
Commenting on the announcement, Keith Hellawell, Chairman, said: "Within pharmaceuticals many of the major drug companies are looking to sell products which have or are coming off patent. Goldshield has a strong track record of buying and developing these drugs. The Healthcare business also has opportunities. For example, there are major changes to UK and European drug regulation and these will demand that companies create an internal infrastructure if they wish to stay in the sector. Within Goldshield we have this expertise and structure already and this provides us with an important advantage.
Our distribution platform spreads across the Healthcare systems of sixty countries and we plan to use this potential to grow sales. The settlement with the DoH is important and, I believe that it will help to re-build our relations with the NHS.
We are grateful to Ajit and Kirti Patel for their contributions to the Company since its formation. We recognise that their resignations are necessary to allow them sufficient time to prepare for their cases.
The focus of Goldshield is our core business. I am confident that with management putting its energies in to these areas that we will see a return to growth." - Nan replies to Grandad| 5 repliesI am glad to hear that there are 3.5 million listeners. If that programme saves even one elderly person from being scammed it has served its purpose. With that number of listeners it may have saved more. If elderly people in your family were scammed out of hundreds of pounds for worthless rubbish perhaps you would think the problem was serious. This 'phone number has only a few entries, so is comparatively new. If you want to see how serious the problem is, I suggest you check out the other Sanda numbers and read the posts on them. If you do that you will see the "problem" as you call it was well established long before my posts.
- Nan replies to Ha!| 6 repliesThe only trolls on here are the people like you who try to defend this disgusting company.
- Ha! replies to Nan| 5 repliesProving you have not understood the term I see. Well done.... truly a master display of intelligent argument!
You know what they say.... pointless arguing with idiots as they will just drag you down and beat you with experience....
Maybe I was wrong, maybe Nan = idiot lol - Nan replies to Ha!I may not be as well up on internet jargon as you. As far as I am aware a "Troll" is someone who posts nasty and abusive comments on the internet, and tries to denigrate people. You, of course, will know different, I am sure. If "troll", means someone who tries to stop people being scammed, then I plead guilty as charged.
- Grandad replies to Nan| 4 repliesIf the problem was really as big as you make out then something would have been done by now. Fact of the matter is I read through this site and a very large percentage of the posts are from people who have not even ordered but are complaining about being called.
I spent the past 40 years in High level positions within multi million pound organisations and being cold called is not against the law. Buying data is not against the law. Unfortunately, if Sanda buy legitimate data from a UK provider then they are also not liable if some of the records are on TPS, that responsibility lies with the data provider.
We live in a society where organisations have to be given the opportunity to put things right if they are questioned by trading standards during a consultation period.
So long as Sanda continue to work with Trading Standards and prove improvement (which is very subjective), again, it is highly unlikely that they will be prosecuted.
So you see, chances are that Sanda will never be touched because they are not breaking any laws. Bending yes, pushing boundaries yes, but breaking no.
Unfortunately any media, even watchdog will have little to no impact on Sanda, there is just too much media about these days for it to gain any traction.
I remember the Ajit Patel case as I was in the industry at the time. Did you know that the case was thrown out 3 times from the high court due to the fact the government had no proof that Goldshield had done anything wrong? That case alone cost the taxpayer £100 million and got nothing.... What is worse is that no one has been held responsible for spending that taxpayer money frivolously.
I appreciate that you are trying to warn people of a potential miscarriage of justice but I would suggest that if there was any shred of truth to Sanda being a scam then the authorities would be all over it..... but they aren't... are they. - TPS Compaints Manager| 1 replyQUOTE:
Unfortunately, if Sanda buy legitimate data from a UK provider then they are also not liable if some of the records are on TPS, that responsibility lies with the data provider.
UNQUOTE.
Not True - the responsibility is on the caller to check their call list against TPS and remove any matches. - Nan replies to TPS Compaints ManagerThanks for that. I thought that was the case, but I have just sent an e-mail to TPS to ask the question.
- Sanjit replies to GrandadAjit, you target the elderly because you understand that this target market is:
- not always on-line and thus unable to readily verify Sanda's bogus claims or to undertake due-diligence
- as a demographic group are the most trusting and the least likley to complain about being scammed
- have mispalced trust in e.g. Nurse Sanda or Dr Sanda statements when they imply that they're working in association with a local
health, wellness clinic, NHS campaign etc. and are conducting a wellness survey to benefit them
- silently tolerate the ad-hoc perpetual rolling subscription they've inadvertently entered into by phone or don't even notice if
they are wealthy
- stupid or naive enough to i) talk to a cold-caller and ii) hand over their card details. (Just don't pick up, problem solved.)
There's insufficient hard evidence received by the authorities for the authorities to act. People would rather whine on here than
lodge a complaint. If genuine mis-sold victims don't report the fraud and/or the reports are too infrequent, Ajit Patel knows he
will escape scrutiny. Besides, the stupid will always be caught out, so why shouldn't he be the one who benefits?
The two founding Sanda directors (Ajit patel & Susan McDonald) were involved in the NHS v. Goldshield fraud cases and understand
how ineffectual and disjointed the authorities are, even when millions of pounds of taxpayers money and genuine pharmaceuticals are
at stake. What risk is there in selling a few thousand worthless pills to a few 100 OAP's a week? They're going to die soon anyway.
Ajit also understands that isolated elderly plaintiffs do not make credible witnesses and if the worst came to the worst, his
Indian based call-centre, UK distributor and Sanda companies are all expendable and replaceable legal entities. New companies can
be registered in a jiffy online. Sales scripts can be tweaked equally quickly.
The few dozen geographically scattered pensioners complaining about food supplement tablets are not going to be on anyone's radar.
The vocal complainants are quietly refunded and don't file a report with the authorities. The few who do file are too scattered to
be noted centrally and regarded as one offs. Victims who do report, report to any of a plethora of agencies. Occasionally an
isolated alert or warning is issued by the NHS or the police and the scam continues unabated.
The only thing that matters to the very vain Ajit Patel is money and image so if you require an immediate response, get the media
involved. Any threat to reputation or cash flow is always treated with the utmost urgency. Media Savvy is Scam Savvy ;-) - Nan replies to Grandad| 1 replyThank you for your interesting post. As you will see, the point you made about TPS numbers was incorrect and Sanda are, indeed, supposed to "scrub" their lists to remove TPS registered numbers. Therefore they are breaking the law by ringing such numbers. If you have read through the posts on the longer running Sanda numbers you will have seen the numerous warnings from Health Authorities posted in GPs surgeries and Health Centres warning about calls from this company. You will also have read the very distressing posts from relatives of elderly people who have been scammed out of hundreds of pounds, and this includes dementia sufferers. How on earth can any company justify that? Why you have decided to single me out as some sort of "leader" in the campaign against this company I do not know as the campaign has been going on for much longer than I have been posting.
- Sanjit replies to GrandadAjit, the TPS is an irrelevance. Scam artists pay no regard to it. People need to report these scam calls to the www.ico.gov.uk and www.actionfraud.police.uk The caller is committing an offence if they continue to process a target's data and continue to make contact once they have been instructed not to. The directors of the company are open to prosecution if they are found to be guilty of breaching the relevant legislation.
http://www.ico.gov.uk/news/latest_news/2013.aspx
The SFO totally cocked up the Goldshield prosecution and the case was quite rightly thrown out by the judge. A competent SFO would not have succeeded, the evidence was solid, and both you and the other crooks and the SFO should stand trial, albeit on different charges.
Yes the authorities won't lift a finger until it becomes too embarrassing to ignore. Media Savvy is Scam Savvy. - Sanjit replies to NanNan, Ajit Patel is in a panic and keen to shift the argument so that a passing Googler will dismiss Ajit Patel's lifetime of scams as improbable. All the best scam artists do it. Oldest trick in the book. Unfortunately for Ajit there are so many Sanda Wellness & Wellbeing scam reports up on here that it threatens to ruin his new scam wellness magazine and scam Sanda Wellness resorts. Besides, it's not nice being called a scammer by your neighbours in India and the UK.

Keep Taking the Medicine!
The Counter Fraud Team has received three separate reports of inappropriate communications
between a private company and patients regarding their medication. Calls have been made to patients, usually elderly, to offer advice on their medications, with the patient believing the caller to be either from their health body or local Health Centre. In the reported cases, the caller has advised the patient to stop taking essential medication and to change to their own ‘much better’ herbal remedy. The patient has then been subject to a hard sell and bank details have been repeatedly requested. The company has been reported to the Counter Fraud and Security Management Service. If staff should hear of further patient contacts of this type please call your Local Counter Fraud Specialist- details on page 8.
Patients are advised to speak to their local community pharmacist or GP before they stop
taking any prescribed medication, or start taking alternative medications.
Beware - telephone scam: A patient has reported a company called “Sanda Wellness” (address in Burleigh, Croydon), has called her and claimed that her details have been obtained from her GP. They then attempted to sell her Rosehip syrup and asked for her credit card details. Please be warned – this is a scam. We have reported the details to the relevant authorities and want to assure our patients that we hold your personal details securely.
