Ive had a few calls from 'hips of murray' - i did 1471 and rang the number back- got  some recorded message that i couldnt even understand what he was saying - something about 'hips of murray' i thought it sounded weird .... later i put the number into google search and finally got  'IPSOS MORI'...when you hear his message it dos sound like he says 'hips of murray'

I cant believe this market research company is calling me on a SUNDAY EVENING at 5.45 PM - these type of calls are unwanted at the best of times but to call on sunday is really taking the p*ss.

My number is ex-directory and im very careful who i give my number to - so im really puzzled how they got my number...what annoys me most is them calling on Sunday night .

The reason why TPS dosent apply is because they pay BT a lot of money to run their call centre using BT lines - market research companies are great income for BT...it wouldnt be in BT's interests to stop IPSOS calling people...hence the loop hole in the rules - because its market research and NOT selling anything they can allow it - while still having TPS for companies that sell things.

Remember BT have always ONLY cared about making profit- the customers wishes come second .

THEY KEEP RINGING AT DIFFERENT TIMES OF DAY AND ASK A LOT OF PERSONAL QUESTIONS. I DO NOT WANT TO ANSWER THEM BUT THEY ARE SO INSISTENT. THEIR ACCENT IS NOT ENGLISH AND I FIND IT VERY DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS BEING SAID. THEY DO NOT PROPERLY INTRODUCE THEMSELVES AND THE PURPOSE OF THE PHONECALL. IT HAS BEEN CAUSING ME A GREAT DEAL OF DISTRESS.

They're still at it - twice in the last two days alone. Have just emailed the directors as suggested earlier in this thread.

As a follow up to my last, as I was emailing the directors I got another two calls tonight. ie 3 calls within half an hour - as you can imagine I was most unimpressed. But the last person I spoke to (Ruth) instantly said she would remove me from their call list - so why didn't any of the other callers say the same (indeed before this latest call I was told it was not possible to remove my number and to go ahead and complain as I saw fit).
I also received an apologetic email from Ben Page (within an hour and a half of my email) who has also promised that I will be added to their do not call list. Time will tell!

Caller is IPSOS MORI and I guess they're trying to carry out research on behalf of clients. Having subscribed to TPS, you have to wonder how and why these so-called researchers can get away with it.

We started getting this number coming up about 4 days ago, we are ex-directory. They call about 7:15pm every day. As we have been doing decorating in the evening, we just happen to keep missing the phone although I run for it, and they never leave a message.

The problem is, my wife is registered to help the emergency services in emergency for language translation in London, and we were getting worried that we were missing an important call. I'm really annoyed to find out this is nothing more than junk calls which I hate, and these people are still operating after over a year.

All cold callers these days get ex-directory numbers by using random dialing, they basically use a computer to generate random numbers, so being ex-directory doesn't make any difference, neither does complaining to BT after all they make a profit out of people complaining and paying to have calls blocked...

Just do what I do, say oooh yes, just a moment i need to get a pen... come back 5 mins later and say hello i'm back, as soon as they start to talk say ooh sorry just a minute there's someone at my door, coime back 5 mins later... if they haven't already put the phone down, rinse and repeat.

Not only have you wasted their time & money, but I've found it gives you a nice warm feeling inside hahaha

    Hello everybody,

I work for the research firm Ipsos Mori(UK)/Ipsos Reid(Canada). We have call centers and offices all around the world. I work specifically at the Ottawa, Ontario call center. I first want to clear a few things up for everybody.

None of the staff at Ipsos Mori enjoy their line of work.

Your pathetic insults, childish excuses, and ignorant tones do not upset us in the slightest.

At our centers we do survey/market research in Canada (interviews in French and English), The United States (interviews in English and Spanish), and The United Kingdom.

All of our numbers are generated randomly. They are also dialed by a computer, when there is no answer on your end, the interviewers do not have to listen to a dial tone, if you do not answer then computer stops dialing and saves the numbers to be dialed again in the future.

All of the research interviewers (people on the phones) are college or university students. We work for Ipsos because they offer flexible hours, reasonable pay, benefits, and no hard physical labour. We are also able to do homework in between calls. Give us a break......

The reason your calls come after 16h and on weekends is not coincidence. Ipsos sets it up this way. Most people work 9-5 and we know you will be home during these times. We do not call American, Canadian, or UK numbers during day time hours because we know we will not be successful. We have a day shift which is 10:00-16:00h Ottawa time(for UK thats 16:00-21:00h). We have an evening shift which is 15:00h-10:30h and thats for dialing American and Canadian numbers.

As for people getting calls on Saturdays, thats certainly not from the Ottawa center. I know we dial UK on some Sundays, but not Saturdays. Calls at 9:00h, 3:00h,and 22:30h are just strange, I can tell you for a fact those are not coming from the Ottawa center.

If you guys want do not want to be dialed in the future here are some steps to follow:

-Do not answer with an ignorant/arrogant tone of voice.
-Be polite and courteous. We are human beings calling you after all.
-Politely ask to be added to our do not call list.
-Once the person has said its been taken care of say "Thank-you".
    -Carry on with your day.

Being rude and ignorant does not work with us. I personally deal with pricks by scheduling them for call backs in 1 minute or in 20 mintues.

Perhaps Mr Anonymous would bear in mind that if I give someone my phone number I am happy to receive calls from them.

If someone, unknown to me, chooses to ring me then they either accept me as I am or don't bother to ring me. Remember I didn't invite you to ring me and I therefore don't want to speak to you.

    Mr.Anonymous
Waddy, although you make a reasonable point there is one major flaw in it. The person calling you is still a human being. Just because you don't want to be called does not give you the right to be a prick. Like I said before, 95% of the staff at Ipsos Mori are students just trying to get through school. They are the future generation, treat them with a little dignity and respect and they will do the same for you. I.e. add you to the do not call list or terminate the call rather then scheduling you for a call back. We have the right to call you, survey research is put in place to improve things like products or government services. One UK project for example is in regards to parks and recreation. This survey is trying to improve you and your families quality of life.

    > This survey is trying to improve you and your families quality of life.

Absolute bollocks, and if you had the 'right' to pester people in their homes in this way then it wouldn't be possible to block your number using Choose to Refuse and the like.

    > All of our numbers are generated randomly.

More lies. If this were true you wouldn't be able to get hold of ex-directory numbers and ask for someone who lives at the address by name. MORI are getting this information from somewhere, probably BT.

I'v explained politely to the people in the MORI call centre that I'm not interested in taking part in any of their surveys but that doesn't seem to have worked as they just keep on calling. Now I answer the phone and ask them to hold and go back to whatever it was I was doing before they interrupted me.

    > If you guys want do not want to be dialed in the future here are some steps to follow:

Wow, you make it sound like I should tug my forelock and be grateful to you for not harrassing me with your unsolicited phone calls. I shall deal with you and your ilk as I see fit, thank you very much. I've emailed the address listed further up this thread and I'll be involving OFCOM if I receive any more calls from these jokers in the future.

I don`t know who OFCOM or BT are. I can tell you one thing, Ipsos is worth more money then your whole 5 square foot country so good luck fighting them.

``I shall deal with you and your ilk as I see fit``. - Thats fine my friend, and as I`ve said before we`ll make sure we continue to bother you. The funny thing about some of our respondents is how much you guys talk. If somebody came up to you in the street 9ON THE WRONG SIDE MAY I ADD) and asked you to take part in a survey I GUARENTEE you would not speak with them they way you do on the phone. You wouldn`t speak to me that way anyways.....you`d be eating the curb.

The numbers are generated randomly. Just because they are available or not in a directory doesn't mean a computer can't generate one. 905-698-3214 --- I generated a North American number with my head, its quite possible that number is unlisted or not in a directory. YES number can be saved for future calls backs with a name. The machine that does this is called a computer, what a wonderful world we live in isn`t it?

Ipsos current valuation is just shy of EUR 574m, and going down, down, down with the rest of the stock markets. I guess compared to typical student finances it seems almost infinite, but I suppose we can all hope they go out of business as a casualty of the "credit crunch".

    > as I`ve said before we`ll make sure we continue to bother you.

Nice attitude. Just dropped the URL of this thread into Ipsos' web contact form, in the slim hope that they actually care about their public image.

I assume you're authorised to officially represent your employers in this forum? No? Beware that you may not be quite as anonymous as you think... but then again... maybe the admins of this site will respect your privacy.

To all the ill-informed indignant whingers who have decided to vent their mis-directed anger after being called to give their opinion on a topic:

What is so difficult about answering the phone and letting the caller know that you never wish to be called again?

If you think you're being clever by hanging up without speaking, or telling porkies about being busy to get off the phone, they will do what any other reasonable caller would do: CALL YOU BACK ANOTHER TIME!

There are comments on here like "they woke my daughter at 8pm!!" or "they keep ringing all week but I have a baby!!!".
If you really don't want your phone to ring... UNPLUG IT, YOU IMBECILES! It'd ring just the same if it was your mother calling to say she'd fallen down the stairs, so it's a hazard of having a phone; SOMETIMES IT WILL RING.

To all the lazy cretins that seem able to log on to here to cry "I'm on the TPS you know, but they still call!", yet can't even use Google:
http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/faq/#seventeen - just read the final answer on the page and then quit your ill-informed whining.

I expect that you are all the same bunch of Daily Fail readers that moan about how the council has changed your bin collection dates or other such trivia - guess what? Your council probably conducted research just like this to gauge public opinion on the matter but you were too ignorant to take part.

To all the [***] that are asking the question "but how did they get my number?" on THIS site:
Guess what, numbnuts? If you ask Ipsos MORI when they call, they WILL tell you. Mental, eh? So now you know.

And finally, to all the remaining lazy fools who will insist on complaining yet take no action:
All you need to do is tell the caller you do not want to take part/never want to be called again ever; they aren't psychic. Alternatively you can email telephone@ipsos-mori.com. This isn't insider info - it's on THEIR OWN WEBSITE.

Now go and direct your anger at something meaningful. That is all.

foot country so good luck fighting them.

-I was kidding my friend relax. My parents are Enlgish, they were both born -in the UK. What does "foot country" mean?

Ipsos current valuation is just shy of EUR 574m, and going down, down, down with the rest of the stock markets. I guess compared to typical student finances it seems almost infinite, but I suppose we can all hope they go out of business as a casualty of the "credit crunch".

-I was also kidding about how much money they have, obviously a survey firm -doesn't have more money then one of the most powerful countries in the -world. I'm not idiot. For the record, the company employs thousands of -people around the world. I cannot believe you'd want them to go out of -business just so they don't call your house to do a survey. In an economy -like todays, thats just childish and greedy.

Nice attitude. Just dropped the URL of this thread into Ipsos' web contact form, in the slim hope that they actually care about their public image.

-I can assure you they care about their public image. As for my attitude, its -MY attitude, I'am representing MYSELF. I'm not a robot working for Ipsos, -I'am entitled to an opinion.

I assume you're authorised to officially represent your employers in this forum? No? Beware that you may not be quite as anonymous as you think... but then again... maybe the admins of this site will respect your privacy.

-If I lost my job or were to be disciplined because of this thread (as -unlikely as that is) I guess I would just have to deal with it. I'am -representing myself.

-I never said that our calls weren't annoying or a pain in the [***] for some -people. My original post was to HELP. The entire point of it was to give you -some insight into how things work at Ipsos (I didn't have to share that). I -also shared ways to have the calls stop (I didn't have to share that -either). If you ask any interviewer politely to have them remove you from -our call list they will all gladly do it. If you are getting calls in the -future then I don't know what to tell you. We are told by management that -the Ipsos "Do Not Call List" is put in place for YOU, the respondents. If it -doesn't work........I really don't know what to tell you guys. If I were -ever able to prove that we call respondents that are supposed to be on our -"Do Not Call List" I would quit my job at Ipsos on the spot

    Market Researcher
In reply to Subs P, 17th March 2008: This is complete rubbish - Ipsos MORI are a reputable market research company who do NOT place "analogue hacker-taps" (whatever they are!) on peoples' phone lines.

Market Research is a valuable means of seeking opinions on a wide range of subjects, and so gives a voice to people from all walks of life. The data we collect helps organisations to better understand their clients' needs and therefore to provide a better service. We also do important research for government departments; the data aids them in deciding on policies which will affect everyone.

These are the reasons why why MR calls are not covered by the TPS. If you do receive an unwanted call from a market research organisation all you have to do is politely refuse to take part in the survey and ask not to be called again.
