Called me at 14:50 today. My answerphone kicked in and the call could not be taken. I hung up and picked up again and the call was gone. Checked this site and WAHAY other's have been called too!!

Did a call back and got an automated message said it was 'ipsos mori' - a research agency. [www.ipsos-mori.com] They conduct the "Mori poll". - Ahh, now I remember also receiving a cal from them the other evening but I got to the phone too late! and speaking with my wife she has also received calls from them a few times before!

SO! - THIS ONE IS THE MORI POLL BUNCH!!

I have just (2040)recieved a call from this number. I did not pick it up, which is my normal paractice.(My Call Minder is currently Kaput). I let it stop, then dial 1471, and if it is a number that I recognise, I call them back. This of course means that I pay for all calls to my home phone.I shall now use that link put up by "John" and "Goodwill". I shall supply them with the minimum detail that will get it posted. My comments will be Pithy, and to the point. I am 74. I have gone long past giving a xxxx what people like that think of me.

Called me on my mobile last night. I answered, heard a snatch of conversation at the other end, then the caller rang off without identifying himself.

Thanks to all the other posters here for identifying this antisocial nuisance as MORI. Pollsters should be first against the wall when the Revolution comes.

I got called last night from 0208 861 8682 asking for my views on Royal Mail which I could easily answer in one word ! Anyway the woman then asks for age, sex, area, etc. which the data they also want so that it can be recorded and resold against your number so other companies can use that profile for more sales calls. The up shot is more calls for the user. Best telling them I want no more calls you company and please make a note, repeated calls then constitute an offence under the harassment act.

Ipsos Mori has a great number if interviewers. To a large extent we are staffed by students (even some high school students), although of course not exclusively. Nothing against students of course, but it's just a pointer that there are a greater proportion of younger employees, and those that do the job out of necessity (while at college/Uni etc). No interviewers are on contract - it's casual/temp work. IM work under contract from other companies/organisations; if IM don't get work, the interviewers don't get work. There are a very large number of employees - into the hundreds. While making sure that everyone does their job 100% accurately is always difficult, in this work situation it can be more difficult than most (not that that stops IM from constantly monitoring interviewers to make sure they do their job as they should). Unfortunately, there are slip-ups. Voicemails (silent or otherwise) get left - this should never happen. Sometimes someone refusing to take part in a survey is coded inaccurately and called again. These instances are of course regrettable - no company wants its employees to do things they shouldn't! Usually these errors are due to new staff not having become accustomed to the work (new staff start on a continuos basis).

We work from 9am to 9pm Mon - Fri, and 10am to 7pm Sat/Sun. As we call 'the public' (as well as businesses and public organisations), evenings and weekends are the best time to catch people. The numbers (for most jobs) are randomly generated by computer (if specific areas are required - a survey of people in say, Norfolk - the computer is given an/some area code(s) and the last 4 or 5 or 6 digits are randomly generated). If we have been given names to contact, usually letters are sent out to say we will be calling (and what it's about). In these instances (named contacts), quite often we can't tell anyone else (even family members) what the survey is about due to DPA (Data Protection Act). It's the law. No matter what you may think ("you just don't want to tell us"), it *is* the law - we have to abide by it.

If we call there's no answer, the number goes back into the 'pool' to be recalled. If you don't want to take part *SAY SO*. To say "I'm busy now", I don't have time now", "Not at the moment", "I'm just eating/cooking/showering", "I'm too busy" doesn't mean "don't call me again" - you might want it to, *but you're not saying it*. It is not for us to "assume" that you mean something different. In life, if someone is busy or has no time for something, then you try them another time when they're hopefully not busy, or they have time, or aren't eating/cooking/showering. It's a survey. A voluntary survey. If you don't want to take part, say "I don't want to take part". Simple.

Do we pay *you* for taking part in surveys? No (well, sometimes we do on longer surveys, but only rarely. This - if it happens - is decided by whatever company or organisation commissions the research). We conduct hundreds, thousands, tens-of-thousands, sometimes hundreds-of-thousands of surveys. It would mean only very rich companies or organisations would be able to commission surveys - he who has the most money wins. Obviously *you* don't want *your* life dictated by multinational corporations or big businesses, do you?

If you are ex-directory, it means you are not listed in the phone book - nothing more. It does not mean people are not allowed to call you. It doesn't mean your number is "hidden" from everyone. Anyone can dial random numbers into a phone and call you if they dial the *right* numbers. They are not forbidden, they are not barred. Again (as below) market research companies don't want to exclude people who are ex-directory - why should you not have a say in what products or services you use in your daily life? If we call you, you can refuse to take part in that survey. You can also request to never be called again, for any survey. To do this we *have* to keep your number on file. Why? Because, as mentioned above, numbers are randomly generated. The only way to guarantee *your* number is not called again is to match any list of newly-generated numbers against our list of "never call again" numbers. If your number is there, it is removed. This is the only way to do it.

TPS - Telephone Preference Service: As pointed out, the TPS does not cover Market Research companies. It is based on Government legislation. If the Government decides to include Market Research companies in the TPS in the future, maybe there will be no more Market Research - who knows?

Any data we ask for about age, postcode, home ownership, etc is to make sure we speak to a good cross-section of people/society - nothing more. Your information is not passed/sold on. How long to you think a company as big as Ipsos Mori could exist if they did something as illegal as that!?!

Rules on DPA/TPS/ex-directory = *not* IM or market research companies' creation. They are laws/legislation we must abide by. We have no choice.

Look, ultimately, Market Research helps companies or organisations provide a better service to the public by asking their opinions. The most effective way to find out what people want/don't want, like/don't like, etc is to ask them. They can't just speak to people who actively ask to be called for a survey as you are then biasing your results in favour of whatever type of people actively ask to be called. If that's (for example) 5% of the population, do you want oil companies, food companies, clothes companies, the NHS, your local council, etc to provide or improve their products or services to you based on what that 5% say? IM, for whatever faults (perceived or otherwise) it has, is just another company going about its legitimate business. It provides a necessary service (despite what some people may think), and also flexible work for many people - particularly those whose work-pattern is "abnormal" or those with other commitments (family/study/etc).

Oh, and if I call and you don't want to take part? Say "I don't want to take part". That'll make both our lives easier. Thanks.

    Peace

    Chris

How kind of 'Chris' to give us instructions on how to handle the calls he foists on us without our leave! How kind of him to tell us that we can refuse to take part if he has interrupted us in something more important! (Like many, I consider *everything* I do in my life to be more important than talking to him.) In short, what a nice man he thinks he is!

Let us remind ourselves that IPSOS MORI is a commercial outfit that pesters us this way in order to make a profit. The companies it works for also exist to benefit their shareholders. These surveys are only economically viable because they kid us into giving our time for nothing. When we take part, we may be doing it out of public-spiritedness; they are not.

Companies want to improve their products and services so as to grab more of the market and so make bigger profits. If they want us to help them in this, let them pay the proper consultancy rate. It they won't, they need not call.

These people phoned me the other day which I answered, and they told me that they were doing some "Technology Research" and would like my opinion on some things. They also mentioned that they would be donating to charities as a part of this (Macmillan Cancer support was mentioned). I was busy at the time (they had phoned my work line first thing in the morning) so I told them to ring back later in the day

I'm all for giving to charities, especially cancer charities as I have lost people very close to me to it, but when people are effectively cold-calling you for it I don't think it's right.

I keep missing their calls, and they keep leaving me blank messages. Next time I speak to them I will tell them not to call back and that I will donate to charities personally.

    Just VERY annoying!

A number of calls to our ex-Directory number. Do not know how they have the number, and we are registered with the TPS.  Also said they were from Ipsos-Mori ringing on behalf of the local council. Getting very annoying - I just let it ring.

    People,

It's quite simple. Mori are not a scam company. It is very much a LEGIT company. Stop being so paranoid, honestly.

They do markest research on a huge variety of topics, including for the NHS and local councils to make their services BETTER for you. They obviously need to know what the public think needs improving.

If you don't want to do it, SAY SO. Say NO I DONT WANT TO DO IT. Nicely, of course. It's that simple.

People need to chill the f*** out.

The posting just above is interesting. Let's take it apart and see what it means....

    > It's quite simple. Mori are not a scam company. It is very much a LEGIT company.

'Legit' here presumably means it is run in accordance with the law. 'Okpulk', I think, would like to conflate this meaning of the word with another: i.e. that what the company does is socially acceptable. Well is it? Is it acceptable to ring people up at random and ask them to help gratis so that MORI can make its profits? Shouldn't the law allow people to opt out of this in the way the TPS allows them to reject sales calls?

We could of course take the trouble to find out all the companies who do opinion polls in the UK and write to them individually asking them not to bother us... but why should we be put to that trouble?

    > Stop being so paranoid,

When MORI ring us up repeatedly, when they generate silent calls, when we wonder what all this is about... it is we who are being paranoid. Of course! And, unless we take the trouble to investigate exactly who's calling - and why should we? - how do we tell MORI from all the nuisance and scam companies this Web site is devoted to combating? How easy it would be to pose as a pollster and pump people for information! MORI are part of the wider problem of unsolicited and unwelcome calls - no wonder we are both annoyed and paranoid!

    > honestly.

The 'honestly' seems to mean the fault is ours. We are the ones being unreasonable - in Okpulk's opinion.

    > They do markest [sic] research on a huge variety of topics, including for the NHS
    > and local councils to make their services BETTER for you. They obviously need
    > to know what the public think needs improving.

So they research for a large number of clients - but the only ones he cites are the ones we might sympathise with, the ones we might be willing to help for nothing. Why doesn't he tell us whom else he works for? The ones cited first on MORI's Web site are "FTSE 100 companies". Would we be as sympathetic to them?

Does MORI take a profit when it works for the NHS and local councils? Does it waive its fee altogether? Is it as public spirited as it thinks we should be?

    > If you don't want to do it, SAY SO. Say NO I DONT WANT TO DO IT. Nicely,
    > of course. It's that simple.

Capital letters on the Web are used to indicate SHOUTING. So now he's SHOUTING instructions to us. We may think that MORI is being rude and discourteous ringing us up without a by-your-leave at often inconvenient times, but he requires us to be courteous in return. This, I think, is the voice of pure arrogance. We are just grist to his mill.

    > People need to chill the f*** out.

And now he's swearing at us....    :-/

This number has been calling repeatedly, yesterday afternoon, last night, this morning and within the last 5 minutes. I have an elderly father and repeated calls that you don't get to in time are worrying, even though I know he's fine! Thank god for this website.

Cold call lady from 02088618682 at 8.15pm. I interrupted her 'read' speech to ask her how she got my number. She said from a generated system. I asked her to remove me from this, to which she replied that she was unable to do that (isn't this illegal?). So I said 'well I guess you'd better not phone me again then' and hung up. She had called before but I didn't get the call in time.

I get calls from 000442088618682. just out of interest. 044 is uk country code -  so thought I would modify No as follows- ... removing 00044 leaves you with 2088618682. Performing a search on this site for '02088618682' actually generates this hit!
Mean anything; Connected or just a mad coincidence?
    00442--44 etc also generate hits

Just buy a TrueCall box, add 02088618682 to the ZAP list and when Mori ring, it politely tells them to go away and you are not interrupted.

This company has called me 15 times over the last 3 days and I am not happy. I was eventually today put through to an alleged supervisor who told me that they do not call customers on the TPS and when I confirmed that I was on the TPS list he said he would take me off as long as I confirmed some details, I refused to give my name and address as I do not see why I should have to do this. He then advised he works for a company called ipsis murray or something and that they only need my opinion. I told him my opinion was that the company were a friggin joke and they should stop calling people at all hours of the day.

If someone claiming to be from ipsos mori says they cant take your number off the list ask to talk to their supervisor (because interviewers dont have authority) and say you want to be put on the "do not recontact list". If, as in the above post, they ask for your name and address to do so I can assure you that it is *not* ipsos mori calling because they dont need that info. They just need you to confirm your number to make sure you never get called again so dont get annoyed if they ask you to do that or ahng up otherwise your number may get randomly generated again and you'll get annoyed again and no body wins there really!
