Had a call today from the UK Finance Department. They seem to employ a lot of Pakistani / Indian sounding people!!! I knew it was a scam from the start but decided to see how long I could string her along for. She said that I was entitled to a refund on my bank charges. She already had my name and address but asked for my date of birth. Gave her a false one. Then she asked if I wanted the money paid to an account or as a cheque. I said cheque.

Then she asked which bank I wanted the cheque made payable to. I told her HSBC as I don't have any accounts with them. Then she wanted me to verify my identity by giving her my credit card number. I put her on hold while I went to get my fictitious HSBC card! She already had the first 4 digits of the card. This isn't surprising as those digits just identify the type of card and issuing bank. I then gave her a load of random numbers and she said that those were incorrect. Presumably she was entering those into a card machine which promptly rejected them as false.

I then tried to get some details from her. I eventually got a postcode from her which was BN22 8JB. She wouldn't give any further address details and said that once I had verified who I was by giving a correct card number, she would pass me on to her supervisor who would answer my questions. To her credit, she was extremely determined and kept going for about 20 minutes. I eventually told her I had given her false details as I knew it was a scam and she could go and shove her phone where the sun doesn't shine!

All of this has been reported to the police.

These scammers use 'phone books and buy our data from all sorts of people.  Not long ago there was quite a fuss when it was found that some employees of Indian call centres used by UK companies were stealing our information and selling it on.  It is not unusual for these people to have our names and addresses.  Another trick they use is to 'phone pretending to do a survey on our washing machine!  In this way they tie up names, addresses and "live" telephone numbers.

LOLOL I love your reply to him, when he said you were due a refund, to say, Oh good I look forward to it, then hang-up.
They just called me and my telephone rang really oddly. It was a different ring. No way I am ringing them back, it is probably premium rate or something. Thank goodness for this website.

Apparently I am owed £700 which I asked him for in cash and he said ok but my wife would have to go and collect it and he would give it to her after he had F"""""d her. I said that is very nice of you what is your address then but he still wouldn't give it so I guess the wife 's off the hook.

But on a serious note something needs to be done about these people. Network providers must have a duty of care to those people who are being abused by others using their service.

    Not taken in by scams
Was phoned this morning, same conversation as others, instantly knew it was a scam.  When asked which bank I said Zanussi, when asked for card details I said it was the Mercedes Benz Bank.  Oh he said I haven't heard of that one, I told him it was very popular in England.  He asked for my card number so I said 999.  Then he got really angry and told me umpteen times that he wanted to F**k me.  Told him that I'd heard that scammers from India had very small [***]'s and he put the phone down.

These idiots keep calling - usually my little girl grabs the phone so they hang up but today I was unfortunate enough to speak to them. He said he was calling from a bank then started going on about a claim. His English was pretty poor which made the conversation very difficult then he started singing!!! - at which point I lost patience and told him exactly where he might like to go. How do we stop these morons??

Just received a call from this number and an Indian-sounding bloke asked for me by name. When I get a call from a call centre  like this I always ask "Can I ask who's calling please" and the bloke said "No you can't" - what a cheek!!  I said "Goodbye" and hung up!

I just got the same call AT WORK!! he knew the first 5 digits of my bank card - very dodgy indeed!!!

I told him that if he was a professional person then he would understand that I would not give him bank details over the phone and I needed to verify who he was and call him back. He got very irate, rude, talked over me, repeated himself over and over so I hung up.  Will definitely be calling the bank!
