Just started getting calls from this number yesterday on my mobile and already had 5 which I have not answered.  I send them a busy tone and am hoping they will give up soon. Interestingly, I am not a customer of BT or Vodafone and have been registered with the Telephone Prefernce Service for a few years now.  I only use my mobile for emergencies so was worried at first.  This is the first instance I have experienced with unsolicited calls and am wondering what has sparked it off as none of my circumstances have changed.  Noticed that the complaints regarding this number on this site date back to 2007, 3 years ago now, so if it is BT they have had plenty of time to sort it out. Come on guys, pull your fingers out.  I am working on the principle that I didn't ask for it so I don't want it!

It may well be a bona fide call from BT. However, I just recently contacted BT by e-mail and asked them to respond in the same way and not use the telephone, giving the reasons that I was away from home on vacation and therefore could not answer my phone (true). However, I could log on to my e-mail wherever I was. So, what have they done? - telephoned me!

Why did I contact BT in the first place? Because I am moving to another supplier (TalkTalk). I am moving to TalkTalk because BT can never, ever respond to letters or e-mail messages appropriately. I don't think they can read?

As for me, I am deaf and the phone is useless to me. I only have it so that I can have a broadband line for staying in touch. So whenever I contact BT and request that they respond in writing by letter or e-mail, they telephone me - TOSSERS! (technical term which means Telephone Operator stubbornly sets exceptionally rotten standards).

BT are not a company that show respect or concern for their clients. All they seem to care about is how much they can screw out of us all. Now I am free of them - HALLELUJAH!

I had one of these calls this afternoon, and I hesitated before answering, so I too got an open line. This could well be a BT number, as I have had issues with them recently, and they said that I might receive a customer feedback call, but I had expected it on the same day, not later. Like a previous post-er I had specifically told them not to call but to email in reply. They didn't. They never do. I don't know why they bother asking on their complaint form how you want to be replied to, as they ignore it, and always phone regardless of the day or time, even if, as I did, you put the instruction "Do not phone" in the text of your message! BT customer 'service' is appalling.

This IS a genuine BT number.  No idea why people are saying they are getting calls from Vodafone on it.

Had several calls from BT on this number regarding problems installing my broadband service - now thankfully resolved.

08000 285 085 = Called & asked for me by name & asked me to confirm my Diret Debit details, i asked why they would need to know, they said they couldnt help unless i confirmed details, I told them I would get BT's number of there website myself and contact them, they said they would never phone and ask to confirm these details, bt adviser called this number while he still had me online & he got a message saying it was BT and did give another number to ring that was actually bts number, but advisor said said it could be some sort of copy and will be passing it on to management to look into

PLEASE IF YOU GET A CALL FROM THIS NUMBER DO NOT GIVE ANY DETAIL & CALL BT FROM ONE OFF THERE NUMBERS ON THEIR WEBSITE, as i did, and nothing is wrong with my account in anyway and its all a bit iffy to me and BT advisor i spoke with thought the same

Its 100% definiately BT.  I wrote to them cancelling my direct debit, they rang from this number and left a message saying they'd received my letter dated (the correct date!) and that the direct debit would be cancelled.  they also confirmed the balance owing and my address.

If it were hoax, they wouldn't know when and indeed if, I'd written! Its genuine.

I got a call from this number within seconds of ending a call to BT Customer Services warning them I would lodge an immediate complaint to the Information Commissioner if they continued sending me sales & marketing emails using a strictly private & personal email address which I stupidly gave them when I was blackmailed into signing up for online billing.  You stop one "nuisance" and start another!  This sort of disreputable behaviour from a reputable company such as BT is a disgrace.

No idea what the call was about as it was a voice call to a text telephone.

I have had calls from 08000285085 six times today between 0900 and 12 noon today!  I have let the call go straight to answer phone but they don't leave a message!  My philosophy is that if someone wants to contact me that much they will leave a message if not it gets left ignored!!

So you all trust Caller Display implicitly do you?

Half the posters here spoke to BT on the number, and the other half have had dodgy calls.
And yet, the number is owned by BT....

Do yourselves a favour and look up "CLI spoofing" (CLI=Caller Line Identification, the real name for caller display) and you'll find that it's perfectly possible for ANY number to appear in 1471 or on the called phone.

So don't give out any info on any phone unless *you* initiated the call to a number that *you* trust!  Simples.

Got 5 calls from this number today.  All hung up when answered or rang only 4 times before hanging up.

Paid my BT bill 2 days ago (on the due date), so if it is BT why the hell they calling?

Wouldnt be suprised if its scummy BT as they harass anyone who changes provider (including my elderly mother) and rip you off for work not needed.

Charged me £126 to "connect" an already existing phone line despite the fact the line was connected to BT exchange (dialing 17070 confirmed this). Trying to explain this to so called "customer services" got no where as they said they had no record of the line.

Just had this # call me, i  googled it and came upon this! WOW, an issue since 2007 and still we are none the wiser. I act for the account holder as her legal rep and managed to get a very helpful BT advisor. She couldn't actually confirm the number was anything to do with BT but she has taken measures to monitor it for us and report it to their security department, with "Ref #'s" and all!
She also offered to remove the # from the phone book and we are now ex directory! Small measures but helpful none the less.
NEVER EVER give anyone any of your details and after every call, report it via 150. The more we call the more notice they might take. After all its a free call to report the matter.

someone with an american accent calling himself chris keeps ringing and asking payment for a BT bill that has alraedy been paid. I recoginsed the amount straight away, he asked me for credit card details. I asked him to email me the invoice so I could be sure it was BT. He did but I did not dare open the attachment. When he called back for payment I told my email wasn't working and asked him to fax the bill, he did! HOW ON EARTH DID THEY (?) get a copy of my BT bill??? It looks real but the message he typed looks to juvinille. Is this really a scam? What can I do about it. I told the guy I thought he was a scammer and refused to pay.

I had sent an email to BT because I couldn't access my online telephone bill.  A pleasant lady phoned me back on 0800 028 5085, firstly to my mobile number (which I wasn't able to answer) and then immediately afterwards to my landline.  The problem she discussed was the one I'd emailed them about.  There's no doubt this is a genuine number.  However, as has been stated earlier in this topic, scammers may be able to disguise their real number and use this (valid) one instead.  So, in summary, it's usually OK to answer this number, but make sure they are BT by asking them to tell you some relevant facts.  And never give out your credit/debit card details on the phone - not to anyone!

I just got a call from them. Woman with a weird half american half something else accient. She claimed to be BT Direct Debit department and asked me to confirm my full address. I questioned her and she said "Oh I'm sorry. You have already paid your bill. Sorry for the inconvenience." and hung up.
I called BT afterwards and they said that no one has called me on their system.

Don't trust these people. If they ring you just hang up and just call BT back yourself.
