I get the same here, it seems to be a someone claiming to be from BT trying to get money out of people, and then they asked us "How much do you owe us mrs ?"

from then on I was suspicious of him.

I've had the same calls for the last week too. I just phones the number back (placing 141 in front of the number!) and it said it was a call from BT and not to worry about it as they will call back. I got in touch with BT and the gentleman said there are no recent activities on my account to show that anyone has tried to contact me...... Hmm, avoid this number! Merry Christmas to all :o)

I just received a call from this number, but did not take it I then found this web page.  Guess I made the right decision not to take the call.

I just got a call from this number. I ignored it, but i am worried that its one of the ones that can tap into your phone and use the money in your account, as when you pick up, they can hang up, and then they have full access to your account to use all your credit!!!

I didn't answer the call and my answer phone picked it up.  It was a recorded message from BT telling me that my line had been reconnected - even though I haven't had a problem.  Now I am suspicious.  Surely anyone can get hold of this announcement and use it.  I'm worried that someone is hacking my telephone line.

Don't worry about this - its not possible with a normal home phone.  It is possible if you have some types of PABX that allow incoming calls to create an outgoing call, the scam being they call you (local call) and then get your phone system to forward them to a more expensive destination (mobile, overseas, premium)

The reason for hang ups is normally a poorly built automatic dialler - to keep costs down the generate far more calls than they have operators, and when someone answers it will connect the call to a live operator.  If it is badly set-up, there may well not be an operator free when you answer the call, so the call gets dropped.

Its a BT customer services number... Havn`t found out why they are ringing me yet. But I have had enough of being woken up by BT. I have complained to them before about calling me and still they keep doing it. Even though I have called them several times including reporting itto their nuisance call depoartment. I am a memeber of the Telephone Prefertence Service (BT ignore this) so I am trying to raise the complaint at a higher level although if I havnt been able to stop them calling me for the last 6 months I don`t hold out much hope ofg these "nuisance" calls ever stopping.

Got a call from this number saying they were from Vodafone, that they wanted to offer a phone insurance deal and could they check some details first and then they could tell me what handset I have, etc.
Seems to be one of an increasing number of such calls.

I answered phone to automated message claiming to be BT saying that the bill was overdue then went on to ask me to enter my account details. I've also had a lot of messages left on my machine recently where the person hangs up leaving no message, so maybe that was the same number.

I have had this number call before and think it is about time BT fix all these random callers. I am registered with the "preference service" and although the "do not call" list held by them (with my number and millions of others) does not apply to market research (only companies and persons selling) I feel that this should be changed and with the tecnology why can BT offer us the ability to enter it like a frieends and family number but rather a do not accept calls from number!!   Think about it BT     so tried of these.. I am actually thinking of cancelling my landline as I hardly use it (use my mobile mainly).

    Richard....
got a missed call on my mobile so rang from house phone, used 141 got the BT message.
Thing is, I recently cancelled a phone contract from t-mobile to switch to 3 and since then, i've had rogue calls and txt messages from someone called fonehouse so it looks like those b@?*"$ds at T-mobile have sold mt details.....so much for data protection act.......
just ignore the calls nad txts, they're trying to work out if the number they call is real, so they can bombard you with junk mail etc.

Yes I'm with Jill on this one. I have been having problems with my BT line and had it diverted to my mobile. I received a missed call on my mobile from this number when i was on the phone to BT customer services and they were checking my BT line (and it obv diverted to my mob!!). This also explains why some people have answered and then been hung up on as I think it may be a number they use to test lines. Hope that makes sense....!
