Well i'm curious, had a call from this number minutes ago, an indian chap claiming to be from BT tells me that they have tested my line, and that there is no fault with the line, but my handset is faulty and will need replacing..I decided to quiz him on this, and he kept on repeating that there is no fault with the line, but I need to plug in another handset. I asks him what test did they carry out to determine this, and he would only repeat his previous statements, followed by "I dont know". he then went away to ask somebody something and came back again with the same statement....I decided to tell him at this point that I am actually a BT/Openreach engineer, and I would like to know what the test result was that brought him to the conclusion that my handset was faulty...knowing full well it was bloody unlikely our test system could ever be quite that accurate (if it was surely half the visits we make would not happen?) , and at this point he promptly hung up on me..
Just in case though, I decided to test my line, surprise surprise it tested ok, with nothing to suggest in any way that there were any problems...I did however ring the number back, and got a recorded message with a lady claiming to be BT...somehow though it sounded different to the normal messages you get, and I suspect may not be genuine, and if the guys hesitant attitude was anything to go by, it wasnt genuine in the slightest!

They just called my number three times. The first two, i just hung up but the third time i answered. It's on my mobile so its defo fishy. They said, we're trying to reach Richard Hammond... unless he has a very close number to mine which could be possible but they'd actually have the correct one for him! I'm sick and tired of these bloody scams. I told them to take me off their database since we both knew what they're doing.

It is BT. I had broadband problems and they phoned me back in order to try and sort out the problem. Genuine BT call centre.

I sent an email to BT yesterday regarding a line fault. They rang me tonight to sort it out. The call was genuine.

If you email BT from BT Com, they will ring you back within 24hrs and if they can't get you on the phone, they'll email you. You can then exchange emails direct with a human!
Emailing first is the key.

I had a call on my mobile yesterday evening 5.30 saying it was BT.  It sounded like a call centre and was very noisy and the woman had an American accent - I said I was terminating the call as I didn't believe it was a genuine BT call.

Got two calls from this number to my mobile at 12:50 & 12:55 last night! The first ring ended before I was awake enough to answer, the second I declined. Couldn't believe that was BT, but as others, I rang it back just now and got the same message others have - BT tried to ring me, etc...

Going to email them now!

Dead call

yesterday someone had call me this number and said we got the report that your computer has some error and opened the computer and opened some programme and took my ID and also he was using my computer and show me some error that time i thought that that's person who has right to know and did whatever he said. After when he asked me the money I realise that's the fraud. I asked him about his name and company name he deny. I want to know about who was that.

Just rcvd a call from this number while at work (ironically, in a call centre !!!)
have just had BT engineers yesterday following house move so presume it is them checking on service etc etc

They do keep calling to see if I want to upgrade b/band - i ignore

Genuine BT call, rang to sort out billing problem, they will call you back if they are busy and keep your place in the queue.  Missed two calls but one of them left a message saying to phone another number which I did, a man called me back and it was sorted out but obviously this has not filtered down the line as still received a call returning my call!

I just got a call from that number (08000285085) but didn't answer because I didn't recognise it. Pleased I did so, but it's now March 2011 and there are posts from November 2007. Surely the phone regulators should have this sorted by now? What's that BBC consumer program called? Maybe I should write to them- there are loads of references to this number when you web search.

btw- the call was to my mobile, not my landline , which is why I was more watchful. I may have just answered a landline call. And why wouldn't BT use the landline number? The account is with them!

I just has a missed call from these guys!! I too have recently moved house so cancelled my contracts with BT.  I am now with Sky, so unaware as to why BT would be calling me!!

had two calls today from this nos---was in the bath so didnt answer !!!    went straight to this site and read all on here !!!

I emailed BT yesterday to cancel my account as I am moving next month and I will probably go with sky. My landline just rang with that number, I ignored it as I didn't recognise it, then within seconds the same number called my mobile. Just called the number and got the you have reached BT we tried to call you message. Not sure about it though.

It is genuinely BT.  It is a number that is on their general switch - i.e. if they call you from any department, this could be one of the numbers that is used (they do, after all, have access to a lot of lines!).  I've just been called from this number in response to a complaint I raised this morning.  Very helpful lady on the other end... not from a call centre and no automated messages.

It is too easy to be cynical sometimes - given the number of dud calls we all receive.  But sometimes, we should be a bit more charitable!

it is bt - looks like a generic Customer Services number - i had emailed them and they called me from this number.

This is BT Customer Services. I had a few calls from this number today and they were calling regarding BT Vision which I've got and asking whether I would participate in a 4 week trial of BBC iPlayer.
