Report a phone call from 08000285085 and help to identify who and why is calling from this number.
- MarkDefinitely not BT as I don't have, and have never had, a contract with BT. Woman called asking to speak to Miss Dollan. When I told her she had the wrong number she curtly replied 'No. I don't. This is about her BT bill. Put her on the phone'. I explained she definately had the wrong number as no women, or anyone named Dollan lives here (which is true) and got the reply 'Tell her we will be calling back'!
- Caller: BT
- DavidThis was a genuine call from a chap at BT who was having problems setting up my online account. He was just calling to explain a delay and giving a progress report.
- Caller: BT
- Michael| 1 replyHad a call claiming to be from BT 'about my direct debit'. Immediately wanted me to give more information to 'confirm security details'. I was immediately suspicious as it was them that called me, not the other way round, so I asked them to explain more about why they were calling. She refused to elaborate. I asked which call centre she was calling from and for her to introduce herself by name. She got flustered and told me to call BT back, giving an 0800 number that I have no intention of calling. I suspect that number is a different scam line that would provide the 'confirmation' that the first call was legit. Avoid, avoid, avoid!
- Caller: BT (supposedly)
- bobIf you are a BT customer contact the Operator on 100 or 150 about such scams..
- Mansell replies to MichaelWhilst you definitely did the right thing by not giving the caller any of the personal information she requested, BT do use a variety of 0800 numbers, for example 0800 800 150 can be used instead of just 150. If you need to call them from a mobile, they also have numbers starting with 0330.
- DanGot a call from a woman, with a VERY strong accent, saying she was calling from bt about my overdue bill. She then asked if I had paid my bill, when I responded by saying if she was from bt surely she should know if I had paid or not she got very flustered and gave me another number to ring! I told her I had no intention of calling a random number given to me by a person calling from another random number and that if I wanted to contact bt I would do so with the number listed on their website which was different to both the numbers!
- Caller: BT, Maybe
- AlanBT. legit enough, just rang me after an internet chat with an advisor. Knew exactly what I'd said in the internet chat, would be an incredible coincidence or some very clever spying to know when exactly to call me and what information to provide! :)
- Caller: BT
- tonyp| 2 repliesGot a call purportedly from this number a few minutes ago, claiming to be BT. Didn't wait to listen to what the heavily accented voice would have said, just put the 'phone down. I have a suspicion that this is a quite clever method of scamming as a genuine BT number is reported as the CLID. Insertion of a genuine CLID into a scam VoIP call is far from impossible. hence the confusion about who is calling.
- Caller: Possibly BT but probably not.
- James replies to tonyp| 1 replyI have just received a phone call on my mobile asking to speak to my mum (BT account in her name) I refused to go any further after she wanted me to confirm my mums security questions and BT account number. She would not mention why she was calling at all and after I said not s chance she told me to ring 0800443311 rather rudely.
Be careful. Don't give out any information. - Mansell replies to JamesI thought the whole point of a security question was to keep it secure, i.e. not divulge it to anyone, including family members. So why would she assume you knew it?
- AnnettePestered four times over the weekend
- Caller: Who knows
- Jane CoganDo not know who this is
- Caller: Not known
- KevinKeep getting calls from this number 0800 028 5085 they tell me I have a virus on my pc and need my passwords to put it right they say they are from BT but when I refuse they get very aggressive and call me all sorts of things lol I have reported this to BT lots of times but they just say there is no active calls made shame on you BT your own work force trying to rip the public off 😡
- Michael Robb| 1 replyI had this phone call from an American person claiming to be from a mail order company that I had just done business with, asking for details of my purchase. Complained that they couldn't find my name on the electoral register, asked for the last four digits of my credit card, and whether the purchase was for business or personal use. Asked for my address too....
I'd categorize this call type as "purchase confirmation".- Caller: DABS
- Contagious| 3 repliesI too have been bothered by this caller from this number as have all the thousands of others you read about on this blog. However, for those who have contacted BT, it is about time that BT took matters seriously and STOPPED these sort of calls instead of shrugging them off as 'nothing to do with BT'. With all their different call centres, dotted around various countries, it is inevitable that people's data will be bandied around for scammers to make good use of stolen/sold information. It is a pathetic indiffference that BT show towards their customers with regard to this ongoing problem with people claiming to be their employees, and making these calls. Get rid of your call centres in these countries where laws on data protection do not exist. I refuse to speak to anyone in any country other than UK if I have a problem with my BT account or issues related thereto and we all should do the same, to enforce BT to remove call centres in countries who are lawless about data protection. It is about time action is taken.!!!!
- Mansell replies to Michael RobbIt is not clear from your post whether you actually had done business with said company, or they just claimed that you had.
The last four digits of your credit card number are the most widely available ones (they appear on statements etc.) so I'm not sure why fraudsters would ask for those rather than the ones that are harder to come by.
Surely if you had paid by credit card, and wanted your order delivered to your address, they would not need any further information than what you had given them at the time of ordering. In many (most/all?) cases the credit card number is not transmitted to the vendor but the transaction simply confirmed to them by the credit card company. I'm not sure where the electoral roll comes into this, and your reason for the purchase is your business, not theirs.
If I got such a call, I would wait a few days, and if the goods failed to arrive, I would contact the company concerned rather than give details to a caller. - Mansell replies to Contagious| 2 repliesBT are 'repatriating' their call centre services to the UK I believe; I read somewhere that 90% of calls to BT are now answered in the UK.
Telephone numbers do not need to be sold or passed on, scammers use number generators that dial number after number until someone answers. That's why there's often no-one there when you answer one of these calls, they are already on another call. E.g. if you set up a dialler to dial 020 followed by a 3, 7, or 8 and seven other digits, you will get through to a lot of London numbers that are in use. The actual number they are calling from is usually not the one that shows up on your phone, making it more difficult to decide whether to take the call or not.
So you can see it is not easy for BT to do anything about this. - bob replies to Mansell| 1 replyThe calls are from a line owned by Gamma Telecom Holdings Ltd. Why can't they do something? Not everything is down to BT.
- Mansell replies to bobQuite, BT is but one company offering telecommunications services in the UK. How do we know that the number given is actually the nubmer we are being called from? And if we don't know what number the callis are being made from, we don't know who it belongs to.
- rewover the last two working days have received a call from this number but they have never left a message. It has all happened since I signed up to the BT community. Also inundated with spam mails from 'BT' asking me to click on password reset - again all since signing up to the community
