I've been looking into this sort of thing for a while.  There is one common theme... everyone contacted has recently been asking for, offered, or opened a loan of some sort other than with a Bank (although some of these hoax callers claim to be from your bank).  What I think is going on is that credit companies are feeling the pinch with the international credit crunch and selling each other our details and other companies too, basically, anyone who want them, just to make a few Pounds here and there.

Do what I do - be exceptionally rude, extreme if need be.  That usually does the trick and they stop calling for a while.  The other thing you could try, but is not guaranteed to work is question them.  They asked me for my details once and I said “You called me, so you have them in front of you”.  They would not confirm anything to me and said I needed to talk to them urgently about my account.  I said “If it’s really that urgent, you’ll freeze my account and write to me like all other banks do”.  They hung up.  Mmmm, strange, eh?

Basically, if you didn’t ask them for a call and they are trying to get info out of you, tell them nothing.  If it’s genuine, they’ll write to you, whichever company it is, and commend you for your security awareness, then get on with telling you about the issue in private.

I get so many of these calls that I now deliberately ignore every phone call I get, dialling 1471 and calling back only if I recognise the number. having a land line nowadays is useless. BT are useless. It is a very dangerous thing for pensioners or someone who is gullible.

again, yet another call from this BT number, this must be over 50 calls in recent months.
I am getting so sick of this now, I am disabled and each time I get the call and get to phone they hanfg up. Have complained TWICE to BT and still they call.
This should be made illegal to keep pestering people for no reason.

Collective action is what's required. If enough people all threatened to terminate their BT contracts at the same time, it might just make them sit up and take notice.

Anyone out there who works in the media or has media connections who could orchestrate such a campaign? Power to the People!

It's a couple of days now I've been receiving calls from this number, yesterday they rang continuously for what must have been 10 mins at least...

OK so I finally decided to call them back, there's a recorded message saying they are BT and they tried to get in touch with me but failed and they'll try again later on. Have no idea what they might want from me but at least now I know the source of the calls.

I've had a couple of calls from this number today. When I managed to get to the phone in time I found that it is nothing sinister, just a recorded message from BT to say that the fault I reported on my line has been fixed.

called regularly by this number - getting a bit hacked off at this stage, so I added the number to my handset call block list, and hey presto... they can call until hell freezes over, cos my phone won't ring when they call

Literally just had a call from this number.  Answered it and it was "Vicky from BT".  A few days ago we had no dial tone at all and got in touch with them to get it sorted.  She simply called to make sure the problem had been resolved.  A number you don't know isn't always a bearer of bad news or malice!

Why would BT feel the need to ring me? They have been ringing constantly for a week now. My direct debit is fine, I am not in arrears, I have not reported a fault, I have not contacted their customer services in years. If it keeps up, I will just leave them. I am sick of these silent calls at all hours of the day.

A few weeks ago we were being swamped with silent calls from B.T. We Complained to B.T, Offcom, and the T.P.S. Eventually when I phoned B.T they told me that they had me regitered as having given my permission to receive these calls. Who do the arrogant scumbags think they are. As if I would give someone permission to make dozens of silent calls to my number.

B.T assured me that I would not receive any more silent calls. Guess what? they have started again. Can you imagine what would happen to me if I stood on the doorstep of one of the B.T bosses, thumping on the door, shouting my head off. Of course I would by arrested, but apparently the law does'nt apply to them.

Perhaps you could explain why you took the time to research the number yourself,,if its "just BT get over it"
Your a moron, obviously if people keep receiving nuisancecalls they are likely to research and comment about it,ESPECIALLY if its a well known business doing the calling.I hope they keep pestering you at all hours,,,as it clearly doesnt bother you

I have had a call this evening from what appeared to be a call centre abroad, poor english, saying they were from BT direct debit department, asked me to tell them my address so they could check my details, I told them I would not tell them my details because I didn't know who they were, they hung up!!  Very suspicious suspect trying to get my bank details.

Had 4 of these calls this evening and had the reocrded BT message when I tried to call back. The 'fault on the line' thing souns about right as I've not got a dial tone at the moment.
