Someone just called asked for a named person and when told they had a wrong number they hung up....

I've had all this too. Sometimes they phone and hang up, and sometimes I hear an electronic voice that's crackling and barely audible. I phoned Barclays who did very little, and BT said there's nothing they can do if I don't pay for a blocking system.
I'm on the verge of telling Barclays they can stick their account if they don't stop this rubbish. Maybe that's what we all should do!!!

Hi folks, this is actually a barclays number calling you, its most likely a welcome call if you have recently taken a product out from a branch or its to advise of developments in products such as better rate savings accounts or competative loan rates.  The reason it may seem cagey is due to a process called ID&V which ensures that the bank is definitley speaking to the account holder, the details they will ask for is D/O/B and last two letters of your mothers maiden name, if you are unsure you should ask the caller to confirm either your sort code or the last six digits of your connect card.

I had another call from this number earlier this evening.

They have called me many times over the last year, wanting DOB etc.

The first few times they called I told them that I do not give any personal details out over the phone to unconfirmed callers...They hung up.

Since then I check the number calling me and if it's 08000852652 I don't bother to answer. (they never leave a message on my machine either.. funny that !)

I figure if any bank has anything important to tell me they will send a letter
which they should be doing anyway if these really are calls from a bank.

I joined  barclays lil while ago they keep phoning i do answer and they dont speak its everyday day 2 3 times. not good customer services really

I received a call ask about my DOB, i am very suspicious and didn't give any information.

I suggest everyone report this kind of call to Barclay, and ask for a explanation.

Just got a call from this number. Seemed like the caller had an indian accent and as soon as i told him the person he wanted wasn't there, well he wanted to go and said he could only ring back before seven. Seems like they know some information about your account but i dont think they have asked for any information other than DOB. but if it is Barclays seems very rude!!! Wouldnt tell me why he called doesnt sound like something a respected bank would say!!

Get 2 calls Every evening really annoying. Always hang up as I asnswer it.

Called Barclays, they advised to register on the Telephone preference service to stop these calls. Also appologised and are escalating this as there seems to be an issue with their system. Hope it stops for others soon.

Just had a call from this number. Said they were calling from Barclays and asked to confirm my date of birth. When I gave it, the lady (Scottish accent)
said they had a different date and asked me to confirm my address which she read out and I (foolishly) confirmed. She then suggested that I call in to my bank and inform them that they had incorrect details. She then rang off. I have checked my account on line and everything seems to be correct. I will certainly go to my bank first thing tomorrow. Hope reporting my experience is of some use.

I've had calls from this number.  Calling 1471 proves nothing of course, as it simply gives the time and number of the last caller (which you already know, of course!), but most certainly does NOT confirm their identity.

Barclays do have quite a few 0800 085 xxxx numbers, but I can't find this one listed anywhere.

08000852652 is definately a Barclays number, the call centre opperator I spoke to confirmed this but its one of their less used numbers, and it required a bit of diggin by her to locate it. Their call logging for this number is fubard. They had the last call to me was 14th April at 0615 yup that 6:15AM, it didnt happen! When in fact I have been called every evening twice. Following the call I registered with the TPS and either what the Barclays person did worked or TPS worked that fast but no calls last night.

Called today (6/6/08) asking for D.O.B claiming to be from Barclays bank. wanting to check that i was happy with the bank and my current account, wouldn't give D.O.B so they said they could give me some details either my sort code or the last 6 numbers on my debit card. they did this but still wouldn't give them my details, told me to ring 1471 after they rang off to be reasssured call was genuine. But still sounds dodgy to me!

Received a call from this number last week. A message was left but it was just silence.

I recently opened a bank account with Barclays, so apparently they do have something to do with it.

When you call Barclays yourself they also ask for DOB or address to confirm they are speaking with the right person. So that isn't so strange.
But if someone calls you, instead of you them, it's best not to give out any information!

This number just rang me at 19:25. Saw the Caller ID number and wondered who was calling from that number. Answered it and got a brief bit of music, like on-hold music, then somebody asking for me by name. I asked who was calling and he said Barclays, so I confirmed it was me, He said he wanted to basically go through a review of my accounts and to let me know of some interesting new products they had - which I read as them wanting to flog me something.

I told them that give that it was almost 7:30pm I didn't want to be getting into that sort of discussion and to call me during the day - so he's apparently going to call at 1pm tomorrow. Given that other people have said that they ask for DOB as a security check, I'll be asking them first for a security check as how do I know who they are? - given that they are the ones who rang me.

Got a call from this number about a minute ago. We never answer calls from numbers like this.

Called today on my mobile, they hung up as I answered.

Just got a call from them too, claiming to be barclays.
they asked for me by name but still seems very dodgy!!

Called by this number saying they were Barclays doing a review of my account, asked for my date of birth and last letters of mothers maiden name at which point I hung up.
