This is the BT Text to Voice (SMS) Service.  You can turn it off by dialling a freephone number 0800 587 5252. If you are x-directory, you need to put 1470 before the 08005875252 then just listen to the options. You can either change the times you receive these calls (such as not after the Watershed) or you can prevent the service.
I think the route is something like option#1/option#1/option#5
Changes take 20 minutes to apply.....MMMMM just done this says 20mins...well we'll see!

Unfortunately it does say that it may not turn off text messages from service providers other than BT. I used 0800 587 5252 a while ago to turn it off and am still geting around a dozen calls a day between 07:00 and 23:00. Just been through the options to turn it off again.

This number has phoned consistently since 11am this morning every 15 minutes you cant stop it and when they leave a message you cant delete it...no one answers when you answer so what is the point...people like this should be fined for harrassment,I have a heart problem and do not need these constant calls disturbing me from my rest.

This number rang, was dead for about 4-5 seconds then had an automated message which said 'can i have my router back or have you sold it for a tupaé'
Our number is blocked from these types of callers though.
Just stupid what ever it is.

I had six calls within half an hour @ 05.00 from this number all silent on pickup search for number led me here.
While perusing these comments I had a further two calls the last being from 08456021111 which informed me that I had two text to speech messages awaiting my attention so after listening to other options available I opted to listen to the two messages in the hope that it would stop this accursed service from disturbing my slumber further.

The first was indeed a text message from a (cowson)workman allegedly carrying out repairs to my kitchen sink alerting me to the fact that he was feeling poorly and would not be showing up to start work that day - well thank you you S.O.B.
why the hell didn't you just phone me at a reasonable hour you pr@t.

The second text to voice was from BT themselves alerting me to the fact that I had text messages waiting to be 'read' also giving numbers for various text to messaging options available blah blah blah.
Well that's got that off my chest can't wait till I get my hands on that workman and screw you BT I am not even a customer of yours - once bitten twice shy.

08005 875290 is an SMS text service. Its now possible to send text messages from landline to landline or mobile phones as long as your landline is set up for this and is capable. It does appear that someone is sending you text messages but your phone cant handle them. It probably is someone you know rather than BT. Although BT will text if they need to pass info about a new service you've ordered. I know send texts to my wife from my mobile to our landline. Most cordless phones have this great feature.

The problem was with my DECT phone. You need to disable its own answerphone system in order to recieve and playback calls from BT. When I did this I received calls from four weeks earlier to todays. If you get an unusual dial tone on your line(similar to engaged tone) it is because there are text messages waiting for you. One of them was one of those pain the [***] american ," you have won a holiday to Forida," calls

Get over it, it is just the Text messaging system at BT or your phone provider trying to deliver a TEXT to your BT SMS capable landline phone.

Oh! I just put my landline instead of my mobile for a code from Facebook, it's nothing suspicious, just someone using your landline number by mistake, durrrr

This number has just started phoning me as well 4 times so far in 15mins, I answer the line crackles and goes dead. My phone is SMS and has received and sent text fine, in fact i have been receiving SMS on a land line phone for over 3 years now.  I phoned up the BT SMS number and was informed that i had no text message to pick up.  So if this is BT trying to deliver a text message to my phone why when i phone the SMS number provide by BT to collect my messages (which on a rare occasion in the past I have had to because for some reason the SMS did not come through to my phone), do I keep on get the message that I have no messages?

I eventually managed to get a message from voice SMS service after trying to send myself a test text message and I was told that My "line has no caller display, messages must be delivered as voice text, contact your phone service provider."

However this confuses me as I have the caller display service, which i have checked on my BT bill, also my caller display phone shows a number.  In fact i have had this service for many years now and I have never cancelled it.

So I phoned BT customer services, the first person I phoned could in the end could not help me but it took about 30 mins and a lot of my being on hold listening to repetitive guitar music to learn this. I was eventually handed on to someone else who told me I had to register, but I told her that have used SMS on my landline for 3 years now, I have just changed my model of phone but the SMS service worked fine on Monday (both sending as I sent a text to my mother's mobile phone and receiving, i got one back from her).  In addition at the weekend when i sorted out the new phone I had already sent myself a test text message both from a mobile i have and my home phone and that worked and if this was a registration problem then the first text I sent would have registered me and I would have started having this problem then not after I have successfully received SMS on my land lane SMS capable phone.  I was told I had to phone another number "0800 077 771" open mon-sat 8am-8pm.

    So tomorrow the saga continues.

It's Saturday morning... only day that I have a chance of staying in bed half an hour longer than usual... THEN the phone rings!  1471 reveals it's 08005875290 which tells me I have a message with BT... but when I call there is no message!  How annoying!

I have been called twice in five minutes.  This number belongs to Kingston Communications, a tele-sales company based in Hull andspecialising in selling telecommunications (telephone and broadband).

They have called previously despite my number being ex-directory and listed with TPS. Extremely annoying.
