Keep calling.  We are told time and time again not to give details on the phone and then you get these calls from supposed banks.  I  like others have started asking them to identify themselves, they called me they should know my details.  If you keep doing this they hang up.  DO NOT GIVE ANYONE YOUR BANK DETAILS you only have their word they say who they are.  It is time banks realised they did not have the right to harass customers.  After all without us they would be out of work too.

If I had the choice (which we are denied) I wouldn't use banks at all.

I have had two calls from this number, I refused to provide details and then I called HSBC Visa Fraud and they said that they could not verify that this was a valid call as all their calls to customers should be logged and these had not. They advised that I should ask the caller to put notes on my account so that the call could be validated as an HSBC call.

Just had a call from this number at 8:30am. The caller was a women with no accent, so I believe she is British. She said that the call is related to my HSBC business account and tried to ask security questions. She could not tell me what the name of my company is, so I refused to speak at that point. I called HSBC but they could not find any notes on my account regarding this call. I told HSBC that I'll close all my accounts within HSBC if I receive more calls from this number. Please, keep doing the same to stop this annoying practice.

Well, I know all too well about the people who call from this number. They called me claiming to be the "Collections team" and that they wanted to talk to me about my student account. I agreed, Went through the checks (which I shouldn't have done, but I wanted the calls to stop) then the Indian woman told me I am 800 pounds overdrawn, which I am well aware. I am a student studying at a welsh university, so an overdraft on a student account is nothing new. They asked when the next time funds are going to be paid, so I told them the 24th of September. They agreed to wait for this payment. So on the 12th of September they closed my account and on the 24th took all of my student loan without so much as a letter or a phone call. The Indian woman had put some phantom payment plan I never agreed to on the notes of my file. HSBC took this as me breaching a payment plan and referred me to their collections team, Metropolitan collections. If you think the Indian call centre for collections is bad, wait till you deal with these guys.

Overall, HSBC managed to bully me out of university all because of their incompetence :(

The worlds local bank are taking out the financial crisis on the small people. Thanks HSBC.

Lady called me on this no. 06/01/2011 saying she was from HSBC and was I able to talk. I said no but I would ring her. She told me to ring the normal HSBC no. and ask for her. She would not tell me which dept. she worked for - a bit strange. After looking at the messages on this website I rang the no. on the back of my credit card and was told a call to myself had been logged. The chap I was speaking to, put me on hold and said he would speak to the lady concerned to find out what it was about. He said it was just a courtesy call to find out if I was happy with my bank set up - accounts etc. I said I was and to please inform the lady concerned. He said he would do that and ensure I did not get any more calls of this nature.

this is the HSBC fraid protection people, they have rang me as someone was trying to use my card and they blocked it.  was actually me trying to use it but was declined due to the amount and hsbc thought it was suspicious.  in a way it's nice to know they picked up on it, but yes they ask you to confirm details without telling you what it is about.

    seriously annoyed
This number 08007838422 is indeed a HSBC number and not a scam, as i had stupidly been caught off guard and gave out my information to which they where only calling to clarify a few details regarding a transaction i had made, however it has been 1 week since and i am sitting with 47 voice mails left on my mobile from them, not only are they calling me at all hours of the day and night but now the weekends too, it has become so bad that i had turned my mobile off completely. I have been with HSBC for a fair few years now and to think of the amount of fees in total they have received from me makes me feel ill. This type of calling is beyond your normal pest calls it feels like harassment and as soon as i am able ill be changing to another bank.

If you don't like receiving calls from HSBC you are well within your rights to contact HSBC and ask for your preferences to be changed around to stop phone calls.

However, if you are overdrawn, the bank are well within their rights to call you. As for giving out information on the phone, as far as I'm aware HSBC will provide part of the answer and ask you to provide the rest. For example, they will provide the first part of your postcode and ask you to provide the rest and then the date of your birth and ask for you to confirm the latter.

Some people on here need to stop being so precious about that information, all of it is freely available in your local library to absolutely anyone who wants to walk up and pick up the electoral roll.

    Confused
This number called me this afternoon, was going to phone it back but thought I would do some research and find out who it was. It is quite clear the number belongs to HSBC, but I found this strange as I have never had an account with them in my life...

This is a dialer that calls and I guess the information then pops up on a screen in a call centre somewhere in the universe. Its hard to get them to stop calling, though I managed it a year or so ago, but recently I call the bank with a mortgage query, as I'm selling the house, and it has all kicked off again. I quite enjoy being abusively rude and awkward when they call, though I agree it can be annoying with them calling all hours.I'd probably agree with the view on this site that if it really bothers you, it is best to change the contact numbers to non existent phone numbers or perhaps one of their own. There is nothing personal about this - it is HSBC fishing on an industrial scale - spamming really. Banks - run by thieves, operated by idiots straight out of the lower castes in Brave New World.
