Spoke to Bank of Scoltand customer services. This is a FirstDirect number and the reason you get calls is you failed 9like me) to opt out of their Marketing programme (I didn't tick the box). They will have you removed from the database if you phone them (08457 253519).

    ticked what box
Calls only started a week ago.  Have not filled out any forms for Halifax or anyone else for several years (direct debit takes care of renewal) so am intrigued that I have agreed for them to contact me by phone.  Strange how quickly they hang up when you ask them how they can confirm they are who they say they are.  Identity theft springs to mind.  If it's genuine they need to sort it out and allow us to contact them through our local branch or post us the info through the post.  One assumes they have my address!

Done my research - IT IS HALIFAX.
I missed a minimum payment due to forgetting to set up a DD.
They will chase you down as best they can to get their money back - they are a bank after all.

Shame they have to go about it in such a seemingly underhand/rude manner - but then again, it is "rude"/illegal not to have made your repayments when you have already happily signed their terms and conditions.

There's a few too many folk on here spouting on about scam/con-artist sh*te, which is of no help whatsoever, when people want to know EXACTLY what the phonecall is.

Gents called claiming to be from Halifax asking for security details before proceeding. When I refused he said that my refusal would be recorded and calls would be received again later.

This is the Halifax. The woman who phoned me gave me the number 08708501291 since I wouldn't divulge my details over the phone.

I logged onto the Halifax site and found my credit card account in arrears with the above number displayed.

This number has been calling me about three times a day for the past five days. Today I answered and told them I would not give any info over the phone and that they were being investigated for a phone scam. Woman on the phone got shirty and hung up. Have just received the call again, patched through to India, chap asked me to verify my date of birth and postcode for security, I told him no way and he hung up.

A man called on 08445 811014 today and introduced himself as Festus from the Halifax Bank. He told me that my credit card this month had not been met, and would I like to pay now by credit card. I refused as something seemed odd. It was a very bad line and his English was strongly accented - possibly African? When I asked for his number, he gave me 0870 850 1291, but when I checked him out on 1471, the number that came up was 08445 811014.

Keep getting calls from this number but they never leave a message.  Calls come through all times of the day.  Who are they?

Always get calls from these approaching my pay-day, they must be able to sniff money lol. Anyway, a word of advice and warning from experience.

I am in a lot of debt, and am paying nominal payments to clear it as agreed with all my creditors. I happen to have a Halifax Credit Card which is £300 over limit at the moment, and owe around £3000 on a Halifax Loan.

As I also bank with them, this gives them the right to take money from my Current Account to pay these credits off as and when they see fit. The other morning I logged in to the online banking section and saw that there was an ominous entry in my debits section - "Cash - £16.77". Well you can't withdraw loose change from an ATM so when you see something like this and you're in my situation with them, this is why.

In the run-up to this, they will call you incessantly on this number. If you ignore it for a few days, they will see that as their right to take the money from your account to pay it (assuming you are banking under the Halifax umbrella of companies). Otherwise, you will just get loads of calls.

They do act on behalf of HBOS, but their sole mission is to get you to pay up (you must have gone overdraws, paid late, paid less than the minimum amount etc).

Oh and one last thing, as with most banks the due by date shifts forwards a few days every month, for me the last pay-by date was the 28th April, then the 24th May etc. It's a real pain because I keep telling them I only get paid monthly and can't pay any quicker.

Hope this was of some help to you.

My wife has been receiving calls from this number on her mobile and I received a call this evening at home asking for my wife.  When I said she wasn't here the caller, with a very brash African accent, immediately hung up.  A quick Google brought me here and I called Halifax a few minutes ago and the assistant could neither confirm or deny that the number had anything to do with them.  Both my wife and I are Halifax customers and the assistant did say however that the call *may* be genuine and that my wife mustn't have checked a box on a form that said "No Marketing", hence the calls.  So, he gave me a number at Halifax to call to get my wife's details removed from their database and he said this should stop the calls.  The number is: 08457 27 37 47.

As usual I answered the phone... Can I speak to Mr Colin Nicol, speaking sez I, can you confirm your D.O.B. and your postcode... No, You phoned me. Sound familiar? These cretins are calling me on a daily basis, 5 to 6 times on my home and mobile number. This has been going on for a couple of weeks and I have had enough.
After a bit of research I found First Assists' telephone number via the Halifax website and gave them a call. I explained to the nice lady that I was receiving these type of calls... I must say that, she couldn't have been more apologetic and helpful. She took my name and both numbers (I also gave her the numbers that the calls originate from 0844 581 1014/5)and said that she will contact the department and have my information removed from their dialers.

The number I called was 0800 107 4377 which connects to some nice people in Plymouth.

I will update this in about 7 days to give you the good news or the bad, the bad being that my details have been passed to another company who want to sell me more unwanted 5h!t  :o)

Good Luck Folks and keep ignoring the calls

This is NOT the Halifax, these are scammers! Please, please, do NOT give them your details! If you are with the Halifax and owe money, it's a coincidence. I don't bank with them and have been receiving phone calls from them for the past two weeks. Once, when I directly challenged them and said, "You're fraudsters, aren't you?" there was a long silence. Then they hung up. They say they'll "send a letter" - but of course they never do. It's such an obvious scam - people with foreign accents asking for your personal details, who get rude and shirty and hang up when you dare to suggest they're scammers - hardly the behaviour of professional banking call centres. Just hang up on them, it's all you can do unless you get your phone company to block the number. (I quite enjoy arguing with them though :) )

I have been receiving calls from this number for a few weeks now, always starting with the "please confirm your d.o.b, post code etc" line. I actually got a call at about 9.15pm the other night which seems a bit over zealous for Halifax.
The only reason that I can think of is that I applied for a loan online about a month ago. I guess that means that I have also inadvertently signed myself up for loads of marketing BS.
    Lesson learned.

Well it worked. I have been call free for 4 days now!!!!.

We all know that they aren't the Halifax, regardless of what they say. The employees in the call centre lack that basics of customer service training and seem to be a bunch of badly educated plebs... ignorant and belligerent too!

So as it has worked for me, Please have a word with first assists' office in plymouth on 0800 107 4377, explain (nicely) about the calls, both the automated dialers (the ones that are silent and then hang up) and the call centre calls. Tell them that they start from early morning and carry on throughout the day up until about 8:00pm and that it has been going on for weeks.

It may take a few days for the calls to stop but I found that it was worth the call. We have been able to turn the off the fax machine on the landline, our friends are able to phone once instead of doing the secret 2 ring hang up and redial! bliss.

I understand that these companies are phoning to generate business but enough is enough. from now on I will triple check any forms that I fill in either on the net or in person and make damn sure that I tick or leave blank (whichever is required)the box asking me about marketing / third parties wanting to sell me something. For me the answer is NO! I DO NOT WISH TO BE CONTACTED :o)

The best of luck to you all.

    Kind regards

    Colin (starcomms@aol.com)

Never fall for that line about "there's a problem with your account". It's not Halifax, it's First Assist and Halifax have given them some of your personal data. It's probably illegal.  By coincidence I have just received a substantial bonus and was thinking about investing it with the Halifax.  Now I have seen how they pass personal data around I shan't touch them!
