- General Maximus Decimus Meridius| 2 repliesYou may be surprised to know that these calls are criminal offences !! They are breaches of the Telecommunication Act 1984 (as amended) & the Harassment Act 2000 (as amended) Here is the relevant section ot the TA 1984 (AA)
(cf. Sec. 43. Improper use of public telecommunications system. (1) A person who – (b) sends by those means, for the purpose of causing …needless anxiety to another… persistently makes use for that purpose of a public telecommunication system, shall be guilty of an offence…)
The general public is ignorant of this law,
REPORT THEM TO THE POLICE ! This is quite easy : you will need their adress ( you will probably have had letters from them with their address) -go into a police station. Be POLITE to the police !! -but firm ! You will need a list of times and tel.nos -with mobiles this is easy : IMPORTANT tell them it's traumatising you! Sadly the police will tell you this is a civil matter -it's not - stand your ground and insist a crime report is initiated under breaches of the Telecommunication Act 1984 (as amended) & the Harassment Act 2000 (as amended) & collect the crime report number - take this print out with you
Call the police station you reported it to every few days and ask what progress has been made
&/or Send them a recorded letter stating you do not want them to call and they are legally obliged to remove your telephone number . Invite them to write but but not call
Until someone escalates these criminal offences with the police -- they will continue to flout the law and traumatise people
Here is the basis of a letter you can plagiarise –
Telecommunication act 1984 (as amended)
Any person(s) calling or trying to contact xxxxxxxxxxxxx via the telephone either into his private residence, office or mobile telephone for the purposes of “collecting” monies or investigating his private finances or for any purposes will and have been in de facto breach of the Telecommunication act 1984 (as amended) Section 43. 1 (b), and are committing a prima facie criminal offence attracting a £5000 fine or 6 months imprisonment, on the grounds that it is unnecessary, causes anxiety and is a pointless waste of time.
After this notification any further calls (including his place of work) WILL be reported to the police with an insistence via the duty inspector of the reporting police station that a crime report is initiated against that company and subsequently the individual making the call.( you will need a list of times and tel.nos -with mobiles this is easy ) Sadly the police will tell you this is a civil matter -its not - stand your ground and insist a crime report is initiated - take this print out with you
The purpose of this notification is not only to stop further calls to xxxxxxxxxxxx but also to draw the attention to the institutions who persistently use this method to “bully” people into making payments and hence cause unnecessary anxiety, that they are committing a prima facie criminal offence.
This offence is both de facto and prima facie by the Acts wording (cf. Sec. 43. Improper use of public telecommunications system. (1) A person who – (b) sends by those means, for the purpose of causing …needless anxiety to another… persistently makes use for that purpose of a public telecommunication system, shall be guilty of an offence…)
The general public is ignorant of this law, and how to pursue it.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, his family and commercial colleagues are not!

After saying "Hello" twice, they hung up.
Sounded like it came from a call centre with the background noise.- Caller: Unknown
- Paul NewellI keep getting calls on my mobile & as I live in France I get charged for it. Now when I see a 0844 no on my phone I ignor it
- JennyThis load of S@@t has been calling all day using differnt numbers the last one a man said he was calling from halifax and then a woman came on leaving the opening hours. I'm going to answe next time and say Cheshire police hq that got rid of th e last lot a few months ago
- Caller: Halifax??
- BeckersI had a call from this number, and asked them to write me, as I didn't want to give them my details (DOB and Post Code) on a call I did not originate. I have a S'bury's credit card, so then tried calling customer service to find out if there was a problem on my account. I went around and around in the telephone automated system, so finally gave up and phoned the number they left. I found I had gone over my limit on my credit card, so resolved that. Unfortunate that we have to be so suspicious, and I'm grateful for this website so I can check these numbers! Just glad to have it resolved.
- NashJust had this call as well, he said my name twice, I could hear lots of voices in the background, then he put the phone down. Phoned it back ( number with held ) and it was either Halifax or Bank of Scotland or any other members that could have called, they will ring back at a later time, and I will hang up on them lol
- Maggie Smithcalled my husband and said they where from the haklifax....
- Caller: Halifaz?
- Laura W replies to polly, manchesterThere should be a setting on your phone to add that number to a reject or ignore list. On a samsung just tap the number then the menu button and press add to reject list.
- LynnI've received 5 this morning and when I picked up on last one just went dead - so not even a message saying I've got a text waiting. I rarely use landline to phone mobiles as it's too dear. Don't get any sense if I call on my mobile which has inclusive phone calls. Time this nonsense was stopped. If I've got a message tell me what it is!! How many years does this have to go on?
