Allegedly from the Halifax - Asked for my son.

I said we are on TPS - then was asked for Birth Date & Post Code to verify ID.

    Refused and hung up.

This number has been calling my mobile and home line for the last three weeks at least 6 times a day until at least 9pm. I have never answered any of the calls and let them go to my answerphones but I am sick and tired of them. My mother in law was recencly seriously ill and  i had been leaving my mobile on 24 hours a day, calls like this at stressfull times can be very distressing. I would love to get hold of their home and mobile numbers and let them have a taste of what its like.

Just missed their call, dialed 1471 and then googled it. Lucky I checked it out before before I spoke to anyone. Sounds like they are persistant.
I wonder if ofcom is investigating them?

Just had a missed call from this number, I didn't asnwer it as I don't answer any number I don't recognise.  However, after reading a few of these posts I remembered I answered a call from Halifax a few weeks ago and when i've checked mobile it was same number.  It was a scottish woman I spoke to and she said that she was ringing regarding a late payment for my credit card.  However I pay all my debts thru a debt management company now which I told her so I didn't give her the details she wanted to take a payment as I know the money had already come from my account.  I did later receive a letter from Halifax about an overdue payment, so I assume it was kosher but always best to be wary.  I'm glad I didn't answer today tho as I have spoke to my personal finance manager and I know I'm up to date with payments.

    Duped!
I got one of these automated phone calls this morning asking to speak to my son..so, they did have his name..but then it said type in a number he can be contacted on if he wasn't at home.  And me ..being not very bright!...typed in his mobi number as I thought he'd like to know if his bank needed to speak to him urgently !! I've just had another call and this time it was silent so I checked 1471 and as I was sitting by my computer this time, I typed in 08445 811013 and was shocked to see all these comments.  I've since rung my son and asked him if they called him and he said he had an 08445 number come up on his mobi but he didn't answer it and I've told him NOT to give out any info as it turns out HE hasn't got an account with them . Now I'm worried that he'll get loads of these calls....I'm not going to be very popular !!

    Not pleased
Just had this number call twice today. I ignored the first call, Googled the number and came up with all this.

The second time they called I told the guy it was a scam. He pretended that he couldn't hear as 'the line was cracking up'. I put the phone down.

A woman called later fom this number 020 3103 4000 saying that she was from the Halifax and was phoning as I refused to do the security check.

She asked me for my postcode and I told her that I don't have an account with the Halifax. She said 'Yes but you have dealings with them'. I told her my Google findings and she gave me another number to phone - 0870 850 1291.

Told her I needed her request in writing, which she said she would do but didn't sound very professional about it.

    C****.

Have been ringing 3-4 times a day, even on sunday at 9 am!  and saturday night at 2100!  I just don't answer and have told everyone i know about it.  Hopefully they'll eventually take the hint.  I do have Halifax accounts but I have confirmed that they do not have my mobile number, so I'm fairly certain its not them ringing

Just found this which you may find useful on http://reader.feedshow.com/show_items-feed=73 ... 7a36fc52?page=1

If you receive any phone calls from anyone claiming to be Halifax First Direct they are under investigation at the moment for either being a scam to gain personal details or a ’scrape data and sell’ outfit for a disreputable nuisance-calling insurance company. It’s not really clear which.

The numbers that they may be calling on include:

    02031035180
    02031035179
    08445811014
    08445811015
    08701287341
But they can change numbers all the time.
    Their business model

Get a database of numbers from somewhere.
Set up an autodialling service so that random numbers are dialled every few seconds.
When one of these numbers is answered, patch them through to Random Bangladeshi (cheap labour).
Get them to confirm that the name on their database is correct and then put the phone down abruptly.
Wait a couple of days then add that number to a ‘data clean list’ for numbers that ‘are who they say they are’.
    Start the autodialling process again.
When the number is answered patch them through to Sweet Northern Lass (more expensive but can do the convincing job).
Hard-sell the person on the end of the line some useless service or product using a ‘verbal contract’ that is binding even though not in print (’recording for training purposes’ - rubbish, that’s for legal purposes).
Put the phone down and repeat.
What can you do to stop it?

Register with the Telephone Preferential Service but it wouldn’t help you much in this case.

When you receive a call and don’t recognise a number, try to google them before answering. That’s a bit paranoid, but I’ve found it useful. Particularly a service called Who Calls Me that lists nuisance and scam calls.

When you get a call listen for the ’slightly too long bit of silence’ at the beginning and for a very ‘thin sounding’ phone line. These are telltale signs that you’ve been put through to someone at random via an auto dialler. The silence is the time it takes the system to realise it’s ‘got one! w00t!’ and to connect them to a human. If you hear that, just put the phone down.

In response to the question “Is that Mr. Your Name Here?” respond with “Who is calling please?” If they give you some crap about ‘I’m calling to update our records’ just tell them you’re not interested.

If in doubt pull the ‘deceased’ card. If you tell them convincingly enough that the person they are trying to reach has died they will remove you from the list.

Do you get those ‘totally silent’ calls? That’s because there aren’t enough humans to go round at that point, so it can’t connect you and just leaves you hanging. These are illegal and these Halifax First Assist guys have also been doing that. Report these numbers on Who Calls Me.

Don’t give out any information that they don’t already have. These people want your data for whatever reason and that has a price tag. Don’t give your info to anyone unless you know what company they represent.

Don’t give out your personal information before they give you something that you can confirm with them. This is called ‘challenge and response‘ (Like in spy films where they say “The red camel flies at midnight” and in response, “so the goose must take to the east”). If they really _are_ your bank they’ll be able to offer you some information back. Something like, my birthday was in 1972 - what day of the month was it? If they can’t answer then they are not your bank or don’t have an adequate data protection system in place.

The ideal system would be for all of our banks to have some kind of public password that you give _them_ so that if they phone up and say the word “chicken suit” in response to your question “what am I wearing” (or in fact a number of questions) then you can be a little surer they aren’t data thieves.

Ask to be removed from their database. This won’t help against the criminals but any commerical organisation would be unwise to keep ringing uninterested people.

Leave Halifax. I am going to. It’s just not done giving away my details to a company like this.

Give them grief. Don’t take this lying down. Get angry but not ferocious. Don’t swear or threaten but make them feel your wrath. Tell them that their client has now lost you as a customer and you will be moving banks. Tell them that they should quit their useless and pointless jobs and go and do something worthwhile with their time in this world.

If you add up the number of wasted hours of people’s lives that companies like these generate I would not be surprised to find that it adds up to more hours than more than a handful of people spend on this earth. That’s an ugly business to be in.

There are enough rubbish jobs in the world to do, but I can’t think of many so utterly futile, pointless, soul-destroying and ultimately meaningless than what these people do day in day out.

I know. I’ve been on the other end of the line selling photocopier refills to uninterested office workers at sixteen. And what made me quit was someone telling me exactly that.

have had about 30 calls to the landline and mobile - all from the above number. Automated dialling system creates a delay in the caller picking up. I now have great fun with these people which starts with me sounding as though I am about to divulge confidential account details over the phone to a complete stranger (yeah right you team of sad ne'r do wells) then ask them where they are based - last caller claimed they were in Shannon Ireland and did indeed work for Halifax! When asked why the High Street branch denied all knowledge and believed it was a scam / attempted fraud he could not explain the lack of corporate knowledge. Always ends with me telling them to join the world of honest workers, get a real job and a real life and look themselves in the mirror in the morning, for the first time! They usualy hang up by then but one guy wanted to have a row when I asked why he wanted a date of birth etc: he gave this classic reply "listen Bruv, just gimme your date of birth right, stop asking questions". Tee hee, how the call centres have let the training slip.I put him straight in that I was never going to be his 'bruv' and asked him why fraud, albeit a poor attempt at that, was the best he could do with his life. Sorry bunch of losers.
