Report a phone call from 08453003950 and help to identify who and why is calling from this number.
- SuspiciousMindI had a call from a Scottish woman saying it was HM Revenue and wanting to do some security checks? My response was that she could be making it up. She then said I should call 08453021427, and quote a reference number.
I called, this time got a Scottish man. I agreed to answer his security questions as they were not too intrusive- date of birth and address, no NI asked. He then said I had tax due, which is true. He broke it down into items, which corresponded to the statement I'd already received from HM Revenue. He also knew the date the tax was due.
So, despite the dodgy nature, it appears to be genuine debt collection from some HM revenue call centre in Scotland. As I said, I already received a statement in the mail and I guess they do a telephone reminder. They said they were open until 8 pm- not government hours but could be because they are a call centre.
After all this happened, I googled the telephone number I called back, and got to this webpage. The call is genuine, has anyone received one who did not owe any taxes?- Caller: HM Revenue & Customs
- Me :-)I also had this call from a women with a scottish accent she told me it was regarding tax payments, I told her I dont pay tax ( as student ) she then said it was a security issue, and said to call back on this no. which is surprisingly similar to the genuine tax credits no. which ends 3900 not 3950.
Either way I've ignored it and heard nothing since. - Stacey| 3 repliesThe above comments are ridiculous, i work for the HMRC and in actual fact in the office which deals with the 08453003950 tele no. This is the number that is shown on 1471 as the last caller however as we deal with the collection of many different heads of tax i.e Tax Credits, PAYE and SA, without a ref no are unable to identify which head of tax the call was with regards to. I personally wish we could withold the tele no when calling out as we are unable to deal with the 1471 calls without a ref no. It is a dialling system that calls out and not everyone in the office deals with all heads of tax which is why we leave specific tele nos for calling back for each head of tax so that the taxpayer or claimant can speak to somebody who deals with their head of tax.
This telephone number that seems to have you all up in arms about would not be regarded by the HMRC as a direct telephone number as it is only the 1471 number left by the dialling system. Anyone with outstanding debts on Tax Credits, Self Assessment and PAYE(employers only) should expect a call from this number as we ARE a debt recovery unit within the HMRC and have been for approx 8 yrs, i myself have been in the department for the past 6 yrs and have called out thousands of people regarding their debt. As for people answering the call and it being silent, well that is due to it being a dialling system calling out and waiting for the next available advisor to take the call.
If anyone believes that ignoring this telephone call is the answer then believe me it is not, anyone not responding will have their details passed on to local recovery offices where further action, such as legal action can and will be taken against non compliant taxpayers.- Caller: HMRC
- anonThis is so frustrating reading all your comments as I have worked for the HMRC debt management dept for over 5 years and made calls to PAYE and SA.HMRC ARE NOT TRYING TO SCAM YOU. Give them a chance and find out why they have called rather than assume its a scam. However I can believe that advisors making or answering the calls are not always helpfull, therefore the public are not willing to deal with the call which is understandable as there is constant issue with this throughout the department. Further more I cannot understand how nobody cannot understand a SCOTTISH accent. For years I was subjected to verbal abuse by folk asking me to SPEAK ENGLISH!!!! and making racist remarks (oh yes racist) that is so horrible. Its not all Scottish people who make or receive the calls! Messagae to all IF IN DOUBT ASK FOR CALL BACK DETAILS as the telephone number provided will be a direct number which is passed through to the relevant dept, just because you cannot speak to the original person who called doesnt mean the call is not genuine. Give it a chance folks. Once you deal with the call it will be over, no more call outs!
- EiThink these guys are legit. I got a letter from IR about outstanding money on my self assesment and also got this call. The reference number they quoted matched the reference on the letter which was genuine. Had to phone back on 08453021427.
- Caller: Inland Revenue
- joI've missed a couple of calls from that number over the last few days. just answered this one, at 6pm! a man speaking very slowly with difficulty and with asian accent claimed he's from HMRC and wanted me to give him my dob and address etc. I said I wasn't going to and if this is about Tax I'm going to ring my tax office tomorrow. he wanted to give me the number, so I said I can find it on the correspondence from HMRC or on their webside. he insisted that I won;t find this number anywhere, so I just disconnected.
I'm ringing my Tax office tomorrow. - DAVIDhad a call on my company mobile (where did they get number) saying urgent tax matter wanted my dob (refused) they read out my NI number they must have a database, they claimed had written to me, (I ENDED CALL) I have an accountant who does all my tax affairs called him he called my tax office who stated no calls have been made to me and no tax affairs outstanding. ALTHOUGH in the past i have had numerous debt collection agencies chasing me incorrectly (IRONICALLY THERE IS ANOTHER PERSON WITH THE SAME NAME AND DOB AS ME WHO HAS GONE BANKRUPT !!!). Is this the HMRC dept who make calls trying to track people who owe them tax ?
- Caller: claimed HMRC
- SusanJudging by these comments this is obviously a scam. If the number was a Revenue and Customs one it would come up in a search engine. They called me today and a woman with a strong scottish accent left a message asking me to call back. Please ignore anybody who says this is not a scam, they are very probably the scammers themselves! How they live with themselves I do not know...
- SusanPS, don't allow yourself to be threatened by these people above who are telling you that you will face legal action if you don't respond, that is an outrageous lie. If the HMRC hasn't formally written to you, you owe them nothing. If you're still not convinced, get the HMRC's real phone number from Google or directory enquiries and call them to check it out yourself. Don't fall for this nasty con trick.
- WossacrackI've received several phone calls and a Voicemail from 0845300950 asking me to call 08453021420 and supply information. Their automated mock-up is a joke IF you REALLY pay attention to it...
Although I would add in fairness they have thought it through to the degree where someone without a suspicious mind would feel they are in touch with the real HMRC - However...., I've just spoken with the real HMRC and asked them to verify both numbers, and guess what they said..........................?
THESE NUMBERS CANNOT BE FOUND ANYWHERE ON THE HMRC DATABASE....!!!
They also advised me not to give out any information to anyone via these numbers.
Just ask yourself one simple question:
Have you received anything from the HMRC is the post recently relating to the phone calls you've received?
If the HMRC want to bring your attention to something, they'll write to you first. - welshbaymy son took a call today stating to be revenue and customs for myself, they told him to tell me to call them before 8pm on 08453021420 but i thought it was strange and typed the number in google and found this website ??? sounds dodgy to me
- IntegrityAs a parent I am concerned iven the that I have had a number of left messages on my home phone from Custotms and Excise asking one of my sons to ring back on an 0845 number with instruction to respond with his National Insurance Number?? Surely if an official government agency were looking to contact an individual they would do so formally by means of a letter giving people the opportunity to validate the number and time to consider the reason for the enquiry ?My advise to anyone is do not give anyone calling by phone any personal details rather politely tell them that you will call back so that you can deal with a concern through secure means this is not unreasonable given the fact that there is so much Identity crime going on!
- john dI had a message left at my office to call back customs & excise on 08453021427.
the guy explained some tax was due and after gleaning some of my personal info by way of security checks asked if I could pay by debit card, very scary!!! - steve0845 3003950
Is the hmrc, they do make outward bound calls and so does the csa, I would not reveal any info for security reasons to any one calling but the number is avalid number. - G.Contrary to what the majority of you have commented on here - with absolutely no kind of evidence to back it up no less, this is a revenue number.
I know because I work in the office. 0845 300 3950 and 0845 302 1420 are two of the outbound numbers we use with regards to tax credits, paye and self assessment.
The tax credit office, who deal with general queries, are on 0845 300 3900, but the debt management side of things are to be found on the two above numbers.
The reason we ask for the NI numbers is in order to access that perticular persons file. we have no other way of doing so due to extensive data security measures.
We have to complete a security check with everybody we speak to, which includes name, address, d.o.b and phone number conversation, again, for data security.
So, no, its not a scam, no its not scary and no we are not trying to obtain any details. We are generally looking for claimants to pay back debts, and that is why we are looking for possible bank details or debit card numbers.
The numbers are clearly stated on www.hmrc.gov also.
Sometimes people need to actually look into things before jumping on a soapbox and calling foul play, you know? - Mandy CI got called by this number today and I called it back as i missed it and did 1471 and spoke to a Mr Welsh, he didn't know why anyone would be calling me either as i am not on Tax Credit nor self assessment and said if it was from them and important they would send me a letter but they have no record of them wanting me for anything. I voiced my concerns about the number but he really did not have any record of it calling me today.

- SteveI had a call this evening from 0845 300 3950 at 7:50 from a scottish guy, who asked me to confirm my name and NI number.
I was told that I need to call back on 0845 302 1427 before 8pm tomorrow.
This certainly sounds like a scam to me, it's hard enough getting hold of HMRC during the day, they certainly don't work at night. And why call my mobile number? - bud0845 302 1427 is a legitimate revenue number. I have spoken to a very friendly gentleman tonight who has sorted out a minor problem on my tax that was not dealt with(as we believed it had been) earlier. This number is on the assessment statement form. Definitely nothing to do with scammers.
- DaveOh you poor uneducated fools.
You keep telling yourself it's a scam as they're taking your TV out of the front door for non payment of taxes.- Caller: HMRC
- Kevwhy would they phone me up on my mobile which they have never had record of and also i do not recieve Tax Credits, never needed to fill in a Self Assessment form and i am not an employer! i have never been in debt in my life!
anyone else had this issue? i have not had the calls in a few days and no letters.
