    HMRC Collector of Taxes
If I could perhaps set the record straight, 0845 300 3950 is an outbound only telephone number for Revenue and Customs Debt Management, you either have unpaid PAYE, Income Tax, Tax Credit Overpayment, Corporation Tax to name but a few, the reason a different telephone number is left to call back on is because the calls are routed to advisors trained in that type of tax depending on the number left. We also have different numbers depending on the issue with your account. You will always receive calls on 0845 300 3950 though which is an automatic dialler. The reason this number cannot be found by any other office or department is because it is not listed in our directories as it is not a number to call back on you will always be given a telephone number relating to the issue with your account. Some of these numbers are:
    0845 302 1420,...1424,...1427,...1428,...1429

This is definately NOT the Inland Revenue..
I suspect that it's a debt recovery firm called The Lowell Group.
I wonder if they've heard of the 'Customs and Excise Management Act 1979
    section 16'?
    - Impersonating an Officer of Revenue and Customs is an imprisonable offence.
And the flunkys who are calling are probably on 6 quid an hour.
DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANY INFO - In fact, as a rule, don't give personal details to anyone over the phone unless you have called them.

Your all a bunch of paranoid idiots.  No wonder the economy is in the state it is when you people claim this is a scam.  Your all just avoiding paying your tax bills and claim its a scam so you dont need to face the reality and pay your way in society.  If you dont want calls from this number there is a simple solution - PAY YOUR TAX ON TIME.  As for Tax Credits, its not always HMRCs fault as to why people have been overpaid.  It could be due to the fact people change partners more often than they change socks or they do not inform HMRC of changes in cicumstances.  The people on this line are highly trained and are au fait with all aspects of tax they are employed to deal with. Face reality people and deal with it, stop making excuses to avoid YOUR MISTAKES.  Numbers are legitimate.

I have just received a call from this number, caller asked me my name? and two security questions: what street and town I live in and what is my phone number.

If they was from Tax Credits, Inland Revenue or any other government office that you may owe money to they would send a letter or stop the payment! Oh and surely he would have asked for my National Insurance Number? I have never been phoned about an overpayment EVER!

How do you know the people from here are from HMRC, after all I am the King of Siam arn't I?

Bob you are clearly part of the SCAM or why else would you be on this site writting about a genuine number... you are so stupid!!!!

These people are FAKE SCAMMERS. Ring HM Revenue and Customs, they don't recognise the numbers nor do they leave messages on answer phones.

NEVER give these people your details & DO NOT ring them back!!!

The numbers are genuine. I also work in the debt management department and would urge you all to answer these calls.
HMRC uses an automated dialler for the many worklists we have to work as it is the quickest and most efficient way to contact the public. That is why some calls end up being 'silent' calls, this is common with that type of system.
The worklsits, however, and the details on them are put together AFTER written confirmation has been issued to the taxpayer. It is a follow-up call when it looks as if issues are being ignored. Quite often, the outbound call is the last port of call before the case is automatically referred to a local recovery office who will decide the next action. (It should also be said that in Self Assessment cases HMRC has no obligation to send out written corres regarding an outstanding debt, let alone make a telephone call as well, as the taxpayer should already know the state of their affairs)
The numbers are not listed on HMRC directories or the website as it is not a number callers should use when returning the call. Each type of call has a specific call back number so that they can be filtered to different sites dealing with different types of tax. Much of the work goes to an office in Cumerbnauld, Glasgow, hence the strong scottish accent.
As already mentioned, data security is a hot topic within HMRC following the disc loss and it IS for taxpayer's own protection that security questions are asked. Anyone not comfortable answering them are provided with a telephone number and their tax reference to call back with.
These types of calls are made for Self Assessment outstanding payments AND RETURNS (so if you know you don't owe anything, it may relate to the actual document being late), PAYE payments, Corporation tax returns and payments and overpayments of tax credits which need to be collected through direct methods and are now being treat separately from current year awards - which is why you may not believe there is a tax credit query if your payments are continuing.

It is frustrating to read the many posts on here and I totally understand why people may be cautious, but if you know you owe something you should expect HMRC to chase it up, and they do have a specific tracing unit to obtain telephone numbers or addresses where they have not been provided by a third party.

These sites should be shut down, We have to ask security questions. We are all employed by HMRC - if you people didnt owe money which is used to fund public services then we wouldnt have to call & be rude on the phone. The reason UK banks do not ask these questions over the phone is because they give u a chance by letter to pay them money you owe then & then plunder your acct or send baillifs. PAY YOUR GOD DAMN TAX ON TIME & YOU WONT GET HARASSED

Just had these calls myself claiming I owed money and refused to hand over my details. I am late on one years return but I am also £1300 in credit. I then called the self assessment line who didn't know the incoming phone No. or the No. I was given to contact the caller on.
I then called my local tax office who stated that no one had called me and that I shouldn't give my details to anyone who phones me asking for them.

A simple answer to this would be for the HMRC to publish the No. on the website so it could be verified if it was real. As it is I don't know if it is a scam or not but the people I contacted at HMRC thought it could be.

Just had a call from this number - a very stern scottish woman left me a message.

I have been having so many dodgy phone calls a lately I am thinking that this just may be another one to add to the list.

This has to be a scam - if you owe the tax man money you will get a letter first.

I just had one of these calls and when I picked up the message started, so no trace on our answering machine. Also caller said they were from the Inland Revenue - I thought it was Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs these days????  Gave a number to call back on but since I had no warning it would be an automated message I had no pad to take it down on.

Neither I nor my husband take tax credits, do self assessment, have a business etc. All our tax and NI is payed through PAYE, so how can we possibly owe the tax man anything, as some of these writers say. And how did they get our number? We certainly have never given it out to anyone except our parents.

The reason I think that it is definitely a scam is that all these people on here claiming to be from HMRC and asserting it is their number must be googling 0845 300 3950. Why would you do that? Otherwise, how and why did you come accross this site.

Any answers to lthis last question gratefully received. Oh and never give your details over the phone, ask them to put it in writing.

And people are giving their card details over the phone too hmm?  Probably is Lowell Group Debt Collectors as another writer has stated. They would be in serious pickles for doing that so i'm going to continue to investigate.

This number IS a scam - Just received two calls this morning from a very convincing Debt Recovery Unit in Shipley about two companies I know nothing about. As someone who does pay Corporation Tax I know how they normally operate and my gut instinct forced me to question this with their London office (0208 370 7557 - LEGIT!) who after passing me to a few different depts confirmed it is a pile of poo! (not a direct quote!)Be warned!!

I really wish the site would be closed down. What a waste of time! Too many paranoid idiots who talk total rubbish and no moderation whatsoever! This is a Genuine number for HMRC which would be confirmed if people had half a braincell to contact HMRC, ask for the recovery office and confirm with them.

And for information. Look at the first comment on this number! Jan 2008! Do you honestly think if this was a scam the number would still be in operation? Seriously people use some common sense! If your too paranoid to believe it, phone any HMRC number you like and ask for the number of your local recovery office. Then ask them about the phone call!

Had a call on my works mobile, i answered it giving the company name greeting & they hung up without speaking. Looked the number up on internet & discovered i'm not the only one getting these calls. I used to receive tax credits so I called HMRC using an offical phone number, they said, there is nothing on my system of any calls made to me and no requirement to contact me, nor do they have my company mobile number, only the home phone number. They do not recognise 08453003950 as one of theirs so it is a possible scam.

Had the same call as many of the people on here. So after reading all your comments. I called the real number 0845 300 3900 spoke to someone there who told me NOT disclose my details to anyone other than themselves. And "DO NOT GIVE ANY MONEY TO THEM". They are aware of the situation. From there they gave me a number to call 0845 302 1429 to find out if I owed any money. They were very, very helpful. Again they said they weren't aware of anyone calling me, and aware of the number 08453003950 so do NOT to give information or money to these people. IF YOU NEED TO PAY MONEY PLEASE CALL 0845 302 1429.

I find it funny reading through these comments. You have real people worried about this scam/debt collectors. Then you have the scum bags/debt collectors claiming they work for HMRC calling us idiots and fools. Ask yourself the question, would someone from the gov call us fools and idiots. Even if they are real debt collectors, why give them the money just call 0845 300 3900 or 0845 302 1429.
