I've had calls from this number - it's a scam!

Easy enough to verify - if they ask for your NI # / Address etc, give them incorrect details and see if they realise.

Find out the nature of the call and then get them so send a confirmation letter - no letter no HMRC. HMRC do everything in writing - you will never get an overpayment refunded over the phone!

I got a call from this number claiming to be from HMRC.  I verified some personal details (nothing that they couldn't get from the electroral roll) before I realised that it could be a scam, however they were ringing about an overdue tax amount of £83.00  Checking my self assessment statement that's almost exactly how much i owe them.  Hard to see how a scammer could have known this so it must be legitimate.

I called my local Corporation Tax office and they confirmed this is a legit contact number for HMRC, in this case from Debt Management. They also left a reference number matching my CT customer reference and when I called back they had access to details of my account that only HMRC should have.

I was called this morning at 8.10am and claimed to be from HMRC. They asked all the relevant questions and answered all my questions and even verified that I made a payment earlier in the yr and what the split was. I was convinced by their information and when they claimed that I owed them money and my details would be passed to recovery agents, I had no reason to doubt them, even though I received a letter 2 wks ago for overpayment.
Anyway, I gave them my bank details over the phone to make the necessary payment. Having made the payment, I felt abit uneasy so phoned back the number and it was a phone msg from HMRC, then entered the number into google n most of the ppl here claim its a SCAM. Called up HMRC and they claim that I dont owe any money and have not tried to call me and besides they dont collect money over the phone.

BE WARNED GUYS - THE NUMBER IS A SCAM

    Hi,

I have worked for HMRC and I can confirm that these numbers are not a scam. If anyone has major concerns ask for a number to call back and check it with the website. Additionally, HMRC is opened 7 days a week. When you receive a call on a Sunday don't be surprised.

HMRC don't do everything in writing. Correspondence is the first point of contact. After this you will receive a telephone call. If you haven't received the letter it could be that it was sent to your previous address or lost in the post. Don't be surprised if HMRC are calling you.

Don't worry about it; it's a genuine number. The reason the number is not witheld is that in accordance with Ofcom regulations they have to present a number. The 0845 300 3900 number is just a message to advise you that HMRC have attempted to contact you and will contact you again soon.

It is part of Debt Management & banking and means that you have an outstanding balance which needs to be paid, be appealed if incorrect or set up a time to pay arrangement.

It is completely safe. If your ever in any doubt give Ofcom or your network provider a call for peace of mind. To be honest I have seen a lot of HMRC numbers as well as other companies being banded about online as being scams. A lot of the time it is paranoia stirred up by irresponsible members of the public.

In this case it is a very serious call and I would strongly recommend you or whoever the call relates to gets in touch and settles whatever is outstanding.

Processes in the Revenue have been tightened and the time between due dates and getting the phone call have been cut dramatically. Especially when the last government and the banking industry have put the Country into so much debt!!

Your quite right to be cautious though; I totally understand. There are a lot of scams out there and in recent years they have been well publicised by HMRC; check www.hmrc.gov.uk for any known fraudulent activity.

To Nata Tshi Luganga - why state something is a scam when you have no evidence whatseover. Don't believe everything you read online.

They need to ask you security questions in order to protect customer data.

If you have tax debt then cough up; it's your obligation for staying in this Country. I pay my tax; not that I like doing it!!!

The 0845 300 3900 is displayed when you are Contacted by HMRC Debt Management Telephone Centre; their predictive dialler has to display a number so that you know who called. This number points to a message informing you that you will be called back.

There are around 30 numbers which belong to DMTC; all of them genuine:

    0845 302 1427
    0845 302 1428
    0845 366 1204
    0845 366 7806
    0845 366 7808
    0845 366 7809
    0845 915 6925
    0845 300 3904
    0845 302 1420
    0845 302 1422
    0845 366 1203
    0845 366 1205
    0845 366 1206
    0845 366 1209
    0845 302 1421
    0845 366 1208
    0845 302 0140
    0845 302 1424
    0845 366 1201
    0845 366 1200
    0845 302 1426
    0845 308 8757
    0845 300 0157
    0845 366 1207
    0845 302 1435
    0845 302 0131
    0845 366 1202
    0845 302 0136
    0845 308 8759
    0845 308 8758

Now if you believe they are a scam please post facts and evidence to prove that they are a scam. Stop misleading people by saying 'it's a scam' when it is purely based on a paranoid hunch. Some of you people have far too much time on your hands!!!

Another point; the Tax Credits Helpline wouldn't recognise 0845 300 3950 as it is not an actual helpline; it is just a recorded message for the recovery office.

I'm sorry but you are wrong; I dialled this number and it said 'Thank you for calling HM Revenue & Customs; unfortuantely you missed our call, we will attempt to contact you again in the future. Goodbye'.

So no, you didn't receive a pre-recorded message asking you to call back. The wording has been the same on this recording for years so nothing has changed recently.

I have to say this site is full of absolute nonsense and lies. This site is here to help people; you don't make up things about this. It doesn't help those who are concerned.

Get a grip the lot of you.

    Pathetic

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Are you mental!!!! Are you sad!!

0845 300 3950 is a Cable & Wireless number provided to HMRC as part of the ASPIRE/BT/Fujitsu contract. It is used as the CLI presentation on their outbound predicitive diallers

Funnily enough; 0845 302 1424 is the PAYE recovery number which has been in existance from 1999; which means you owe them money. Pay your dues you Imbecile!!!

The Debt Management office has 12 call centres; 3 of which have predicitive diallers and make 1000's of calls per day. So for you to say scam scam scam is a total joke. Almost all

Can I ask why haven't you approached HMRC for clarification of this? All you have done is made an assumption that it is related to some other scam.

Posting this doesn't help anyone. Because of you people will have demand letters and potentially Summary Warrants/County Court Judgements posted to them because they ignored their calls. Also are also issuing demand letters with these numbers posted on them if outbound contact has been unsuccessful; I wonder how many people out there have seen the 0845 302 1424 number on a letter? I imagine 100'000s employers have seen this number.

Anyone care to speak up and admit that in fact this is a genuine number?

Anyone care to argue this and actually provide me with hard facts and evidence? Even this fella claiming to be a policeman and that he knows for a fact these numbers are scams? Anyone at all out there who will win the arguement outright and prove this is a scam?

I won't give up; you people really annoy me but at the same time give me a right good laugh at how sad, paranoid and pathetic you really are. I am going to be getting in touch with the admins/owners of this website and ask them what they think.

Why don't you write to Watchdog? I'm 100% sure they will be in the position to confirm this is not a scam. Let's here it then; let's here the; oh...he must be a scammer too.

I need to correct something here; Halifax/BOS dial out to recover late payments on credit cards; when they dial out they ask you to confirm date of birth etc. in order to protect customer data i.e. ensure they are speaking with the right person. This is a practise used by all outbound call centres. To be honest there isn't a lot you can do with a data of birth, address etc. If you do try and use this info fraudulently the likelyhood is you will get caught.

There's not much to gain out of this info; if there was call centres wouldn't use it as a security check; instead they would provide their customers with unique Id's for security. There's too much at stake for them; they wish to protect their customer base but also protect themselves from legal action.

And by the way; data protection dictates that centres must confirm a minimum amount of data before divulging any information relating to that record.

Again, in this instance it is not a 100% fradulent call like Frec Chan claims. the claim that UK Banks never telephone customers like this is way off the mark as I stated earlier and I have to hold my hand up; when I used to be late with my credit card payment I got the calls; I got the security checks. You know what, I gave them the info. And guess what else....I didn't have any money stolen from me.

There is nothing wrong with being cautious but it seems a lot of the folk on here are concerned about the wrong things. You spend so much time worrying about calls from these places that you are probably being robbed in some other way because you are letting your guard down. Scams are a little more sophisticated; anyone with half a brain should realise when they are being duped.

Got a voice mail claiming to be HM Revenue and Customs

Obviously reading from a screen - Asked for my Corporation Tax Number and insisted I call back before 8.30am tomorrow and this matter needed immediate attention. The caller had my mobile number, company name and address.

Googled the number he called from and found this!
