What some of you are doing is wrong. You are making statements based on your own paranoid experience, statements which are not substantiated. You have to be factual on such websites, otherwise you are not helping those concerned and instead misleading them and spreading your paranoia. Questions to those claiming that this is some sort of scam - Have you reported this number to Ofcom? Do you know that this 0845 serves the purpose of informing the customer that HMRC has attempted to contact them in line with Ofcom regulations? Do you know what you are actually talking about? Do you honestly believe that your actions are assisting the public or are you capable of being honest with yourself and admitting that you are misleading this websites readers?

I challenge each one of you to provide proof that this is a scam. You won't be able to.

There are a LOT of HMRC scams going on at the moment...and many many people who have NO tax issues are being harassed

I see no one has been able to produce the evidence that this is a scam. And yes I am an employee for HMRC. On a serious note though, if you genuinly have concerns about this number go to the Ofcom website to submit a report or give them a call. If you look at the bottom of this page it states:- Thank you for your contribution! Oh, and please watch your language and post only 'truthful information'. It is irresponsible to say something is a scam without the facts. People have been stung for shunning HMRC calls on the back of some dangerous statements made by individuals, even some individuals who claim to be in the Police!!! I have to say if the person I'm referring to was in the Police why would that necessarily make them knowledgable on affairs such as this. Every time I come on this website I find myself frustrated but always leave it having a right good chuckle at how ridiculous people can be.

I received a letter today saying that I owe over £1000 to tax credits, they say that they have told me about this (crap) this is the first I have heard of this so called debt, I rung 08453003900 and went through to the over payment section, I told them everything that was written on the letter, they asked for a period date of when it was for, wasnt on there, after being on the phone to them for nearly an hour and a few people looking into my file they came back and said that they could not see an overpayment of any sort, I also read the phone number out 08453661203 and they confirmed that it wasnt one of the tax credits numbers, they are sending me out a leaflet to explain against scams and fraud as well as complaining about this other number and also contacting the overpayment office for an explanation of how this has happened, they went as far back as 6 years when I first made a claim and couldnt find anything, do yes it us a scam and I AM REPORTING IT

I received a letter saying I owe them money on Saturday and was phoning a different number just now to renew my tax credits so while I knew I was on the phone to a safe number and not a scam I asked the lady who done my renewal to check out this letter and right enough it's real (deffo not a scam) and is an over payment from 08-09 so now I know it's real I need to find the cash.

Best returning their call and making a payment or it's prosecution

Ok if it really is the HMRC, why is it that they got the name of the person they wanted to speak to wrong?

They called our company today at 12:30 and the person they asked for doesnt even exist. I wonder why? The number that called was: 03002003810

0300 200 3810 is the number for the PAYE payment line, its legit. We call out as well as take incomming calls. The names we have on record can be really out of date, or sometimes be the name of an accountant but listed under the company. Anyway, I was trained not to ask for specific name, but rather ask for 'the person who deals with' and see if it matches what we have. Its not surprising there are differences in approach considering how many folks on those telephone centre lines are teenagers fresh out of school, and how many individual managers run their own teams differently.

Its really NOT a scam. I know exactly this number is for HMRC (Probably Tax Credits either under or overpayments.

I have a HMRC letter in front of me chasing money that I owe tax credits and the number to call is 0845 366 1208.

Its not a debt collection agency it is the Tax people !
