- Ross replies to MarkIt isn't a BarclayCARD number, but it is a Barclays number.
How else can you explain the following?
I ring the number back.
An automated system tells me the name of the account holder.
It then asks me to pick my date of birth from 4 possibilities. (1 of which is mine).
There are some declined fraudulent transactions so I am put through to an operator.
The operator arranges for my card to be blocked and a new card issued.
The operator tells me my address (to check they are sending it to the correct place).
My card stops working instantly.
A couple of days later, a new card arrives.
The new card works.
I keep checking my account and see no fraudulent transactions.
I'm confident it is genuine, but you don't have to trust me. If you want peace of mind then do as Mark suggests - find a number on barclays website and ring that.
If you don't have an account with Barclays it is because they have the wrong number. - Lucy| 1 replyThis IS a genuine number from barclays. Someone has tried to make purchases from John lewis using my card details so I think whilst it does pay to be paranoid sometimes, it is also worth givng the benefit of the doubt!
- Caller: Barclays fraud dept
- Jules replies to LucyYeah this is definitely genuine. I was doubtful so rang Barclays who put me through to their fraud dept. Was informed that iTunes had taken £10 from my account but I had not bought anything. Bank stopped my card immediately. Looked at iTunes account only to find 7 of these transactions totally £70! Trying to find a number to ring iTunes now and hoping that the other £60 does not come out of my bank account!
- RimanteIt's Barclays Fraud Prevention Department - must say, a good service and quite happy that it was set up. worth picking up the phone.
- Caller: Barclays
- anotherwastedhour| 2 repliesIt is Barclays. It is suspicious though, calling from an automated system asking you to enter personal details about yourself. And it's a pain in the backside too, because if you don't answer the calls, they go ahead and put a block on your card!
Thanks Barclays. That really helped me at the till in Tesco when my card wouldn't work and I knew I had more than enough in my account to cover the transaction. And in front of the people queuing behind me. Not an embarrassment at all was it!?
The main telephone banking numbers should have options for the fraud dept - that way when you get an automated call like this and you're not confident it is Barclays, you can then ring the number you know is them, and select the fraud option. If only they'd think of that when thinking of how to 'protect' themselves, I mean, it's customers :-) - OmniCognate replies to anotherwastedhour| 1 replyIts very simple. Go to Barclays ACTUAL web site and they have an option where you can enter the number to check it. Barclays themselves confirm this is a scam. Just to up the anti a bit please consider this:
1)They called on a mobile number that I have only had for 1 week (so Barclays could not have it)
2) The name they said the account was for was not mine
3) This may be the best one. I don't have a Barclays account and haven't had for about 25 years.
Interestingly they e-mailed me at the same time. The worrying thing is that the only people that have my new mobile number AND e-mail address are Vodafone. I am concerned that someone in the local Vodaphone shop is selling these details on. ITS A SCAM !!! - edjon2000I had the same call today but let my ansafone pick it up after checking here I rang Barclays Bank and it is a genuine number, I explained to them that I generally don't respond to recorded messages that say "press any key to continue" and such like but they did confirm that it was a routine security check to identify unusual patterns of spending, they asked me a few questions related to past transactions on my account and then said to wait 10 minutes and go ahead with the purchase that was picked up by their system, I suppose it is nice to know that they do watch out for these things but I would have been better prepared had the mentioned that this service exists when I applied for my account initially.
- Caller: Barclays
- Rob ThompsonI cam here from Google after recieving call from this number on my mobile 'which i ignored' then my home phone number ass i was reading all of the above.
because of the untrust and the fact you wont find this number on barclays own site - i refused to give any more details to an advisor who tried to reassure me by giving me a freephone number to call back. This to didn't show up on Barclays - so began my search for a number to call on Barclays site.
BARCLAYS confirmed that the fraud team had flagged my account and couldn't put me thrugh as Fraud team had now locked my account!!!
i argued that number isn't listed sso why would i trust it, apparently it's a number for ADEPTRA a Fraud - Debt Collection and Marketting company - website here http://www.adeptra.com/ - if you click the UK flag and Fraud demo it'll hear just like the automated phone call you've had.
So 1) This is genuine
2) I wouldn't trust it and would still say ring the number on barclays website http://www.barclays.co.uk/Helpsupport/Contactusaboutfraud/P1242560037908
0845 755 5555
3) I'm raging at barclays for not having this number on the site & they will hear my wrath on Monday
As i now have to take my Driving License Passport and debit card down to my Bank to get it all sorted!!!!
NOT A HAPPY BUNNY!!!- Caller: Adeptra - for Barclays Fraud
- Call type: Debt collector
- Rob thompson replies to OmniCognateI would agree - apart from if you call them they will confirm this number is a company called Adeptra - acting on behalf of barclays for Fraud and Debt collection purposses
- Big AlI had a call and a text message from the above number. I did not trust either so I called Barclays direct who confirmed that it was there Fraud Prevention Team so all I can suggest is if your unsure dont answer the call but phone them direct yourselfs to find out if there was a problem. Im my case a problem existed so I am glad I called Barclays direct.
- RubaJust spent 15 minutes on the phone to Barclays who also confirmed that this number is genuine but they sorted out my query. Had be using paypal a lot over the last 2 days and this flagged up. I did point out that although Adeptra may be an agent for Barclays, I bank with Barclays and only wish to deal with them.
- Caller: Adeptra on behalf of Barclays
- Call type: Debt collector
- mikeThis number has been ringing my wife all day, the thing is we have a joint account with me as the main acc holder and they only have my mobile number! So why on earth would they ring my wife??????????
SCAM if you ask me!- Caller: barclays fraud ndept
- MattI did this just a moment ago.
How would fraudsters have my date of birth? Shouldn't they have a need to actually ask for it?
And details of very very recent transactions. Surely impossible to know?
Whatever anywhere the is f*** all in my account anyway....good luck (maybe) fraudsters :)- Caller: Barclays Fraud
- arthur replies to MarkThe best bit of info since i began reading this thread and thank you ! , i used the link to verify that this IS NOT a genuine barclays number !!! be carefull.
- NathanThis is not a scam!
I tried to purchase something online and my card was rejected even though I had the money in my account. Within 20mins I had a call from this number.
Automated caller had my full name, including middle (which I never use).
Asked for my month/year from date of birth, out of a possible 4.
Asked for day of birth. I got this wrong first time and it asked again.
Listed the last 5 transaction on my bank account including the one which was rejected a few mins ago.
Asked me to confirm if these were correct.
After I comfirmed I tried to make the payment on the website again and it went through.
If this was a scammer how on earth would the they have the last 5 transactions including one I tried 20 mins ago. Also how would they be able to unblock my account?
Also for people claiming its a new mobile number, call wasn't for you etc. Phone companies recycle phone numbers, you never get a "new" number.
When you call any bank's call centre, they never have up to date info, they are often the last people to know about any new service, especially one from another department.
As with any calls of this nature, if in doubt phone them direct.- Caller: Barclays
- Barclays phishing warningNathan really is getting desperate for people to give their details over the phone.
DON'T GIVE PERSONAL/FININCIAL DETAILS TO COLD CALLERS....NEVER...NEVER
go phish in another pond 'nathan'- Caller: phisher
- Richard Ti have the same call evan when I just purchase a dvd from amazon it is very annoying specially since I know what goes in and out of my account with online banking
- Caller: Barclays
- AceSo... just got off the phone with Barlcays, they can't tell me one way or another whether this is one of their numbers!
However, they were able to look at my account and confirm I had been contacted about the transactions the automated call from this number walked me through at the same time I received their call.
My analysis - not a scam, just a poorly implemented / advertised solution. But as everyone else here has said, if in doubt call the number on the back of your card!- Caller: Barclays
- FuryLike those above who are satisfied the call is Barclays Fraud Dept, I'm happy to confirm the caller is who it purports to be. Two calls from them today (the answering machine fields everything), but decided to look it up anyway and found this site. What mystifies me though is the uniqueness of the query. They wanted me to confirm I had made a long-haul airline reservation yesterday. I had. But I make several of these in a year, as well as coughing up hefty sums for hotels and whatnot, so wondered what was so special about this transaction. I've spent considerable more with plastic on computers, for example, and no inquisition. Maybe they've just ramped up the service. OK with me. In these days of internet fraud I suppose it's comforting to know Barclays are showing signs of activity on behalf of customers.
- Caller: Barclays Fraud Dept
- Martyx| 3 repliesThis is a genuine Barclays Fraud Dept number.
I received the call on my mobile and the automated service read out my full name (including my oft used third name). I hung up and dialled the number back on my works phone and it repeated exactly the same name. I also received a text message from 'Barclays Fraud Prevention' asking to call 0845 351 2288.
However, I called the usual 0845 755 5555 and checked and it turns out my recent fuel purchase where their chip&pin machine had failed was flagged up. I confirmed the transaction was genuine and all it well in the world :)
A point to note I think this is a bad idea from Barclays as even though I know the number is genuine I would still never randomly bash buttons on automated services.- Caller: Barclays Fraud Dept
