- Dan 2012(also including 0845 3512288) My suspicions were raised too with this number - 0845 3512291.. It rang both my mobile, landline and as well as texting my mobile saying there was a Barclays Fraud alert. I rang Barclays directly and they cancelled my card, since we managed to establish it was being used fraudulently.
Like me, if you trust don't the phone number(s), just ring Barclays Fraud line directly. Here are various fraud numbers to on the Barclays site:
http://www.barclays.co.uk/Helpsupport/Contactusaboutfraud/P1242560037908
I rang the 0845 755 5555 number was sorted within 10 mins.- Caller: Barclays
- andekWHO CALLS ME FROM?
- DanI get about 10 calls a day from this number. As i have never been a Barclays customer i find it a bit difficult to believe that i am a victim of fraud. Not to mention the fact that i have never had a credit card. Total scam. Hang up and dial back on a trusted number. Trust no one
- shazzyits genuine
- Caller: barclays
- Benjamin replies to Martyx| 1 replyI had this today and can confirm the 0845 351 2288 number IS GENUINE.
I, too, found it suspicious and Googled it. What I found where several comment threads like this one with half the people saying it was a scam, half the people saying it wasn't. Which got me literally nowhere. People don't fact check and are unhelpful.
Turns out that Barclays had picked up on a purchase I tried to make yesterday that resulted in an error on the retailers website.
The call actually says that they never ask for your PIN or any info that could be used to phish.
They listed several DOBs, one of which was mine (which a scammer couldn't have known), they used my middle name which I never list anywhere and they gave me the actual reason for the flag, which there is completely no way a scammer could have known at all.
Guys, a scammer's job is to RETRIEVE your info, they don't already know it.
I realise that like people before me, I'll get the usual sensationalist comments of "Benjamin, you are a scammer trying to get people to fall for the scam" but I can assure you, I'm just a regular dude sat at his laptop typing this.
If you don't believe me then my advice to you is thus:
IF YOU GET A CALL / TEXT MESSAGE LIKE THIS, RING YOUR BANK DIRECTLY. That way you know you're safe and don't have to ring the number.
I'm glad you're all safe and suspicious, there is a lot of scam going around these days but please don't automatically call other people out as scammer's when they say their number was genuine.
Why on Earth would a scammer be telling you to ring your bank directly instead, so as to avoid using the number if you're paranoid? They wouldn't, don't be silly.
Like has been said before, you may get it because you have a relatively new number that has been recycled from someone else. In which case, that poor person is not getting their warning because they haven't updated their number, but you are.
I hope that helps because I've found it flipping woeful to trudge through a load of unhelpful sentences of "THIS IS A SCAM" and "THIS IS GENUINE" without any explanation or thought.
Thanks,
Someone who just confirmed a transaction he made with his bank - DMcHad a missed call from 0845 351 2291 that then left a voicemail & text from Barclays Fraud. Had a quick Google and came across this site which seemed pretty 50/50 on whether it was genuine or not. Called the number which gave my name in it's funky computer voice (which is exactly as it appears on my Barclays card with the initials etc, and nowhere else) and asked me to confirm my date of birth from the 3 options. It then read out 5 genuine transactions - the most recent one being a cash withdrawal transaction in Ecuador! Definitely not me.
I went through the options to confirm I didn't recognise a payment, and then spoke to someone to clarify the details and confirm that I've not been withdrawing cash in Ecuador anytime recently. They suggested that they would stop my card immediately and send out a new one - although he did ask me to confirm my address, which I did. Also, he had a very strong foreign accent that made it quite hard to understand what he was telling me (with regards to claiming for any other transactions that I might not recognise that come out during the day before the card was stopped).
With suspicion slightly aroused by this last act, I called Barclays Debit Card Fraud (08700 010 4503) - available on the Barclays website - to clarify that it was a genuine call. After a 25 minute hold (!) I got through to the Fraud team again and they confirmed the same transactions and that my card had been cancelled as per the previous conversation.
So, my opinion (and take that as you will) is that it's genuine. If any doubt, just call the normal number as above instead of the original 0845 number.- Caller: Barclays Fraud
- beebeei got a mobile phone call from this number it said it was from barclays fraud department did not answer it as i thought it was a scam trying to get my bank account details.
- Caller: barclays fraud
- Polly replies to BenjaminWhat Benjamin said -- definitely genuine! In addition to this I had recently set up the two Barclays apps and so have had two SMS to my phone giving me authorization codes etc. When I didn't answer the call from 0845 351 2288 (and went off to google it like you all did) I received a text from the same number as the ones to set up the Barclays apps, asking me to call their Fraud Prevention team. This would be pretty tricky for scammers to do.
Not everything is a scam, people!
I should say that it was 3 genuine payments that seem to have triggered it - an Amazon purchase, an ebay purchase and a ticket website purchase, they were all done within 10 minutes of each other (well, it is payday after all!). - Royston VaseyJust received a call from this number asking to speak to my son, he was out so I listened to the recorded message asking to quote his age. I then rang Barclays security on a freephone 0800 389 1652 to confirm the 0845 number was genuine, it was. I asked my son to contact Barclays on the number shown on the back of his Debit card and low and behold he had unfortunately been the victim of card cloning. His card has been cancelled.
Looks like he might have had his card cloned by a ATM card reader so a big thank you to Barclays Security.- Caller: Barclays Security
- MelGENUINE CALL. I work for Barclays myself in the branch, so was naturally cautious. Having read some posts I decided to call but with 141 in front of number so they couldnt identify my home number. The following happens:
1. They ask you to input the phone number you recieved the call from.
2. Confirm you are account holder by pressing 1
3. They will never ask for details about account but have to verify you some way. They read out a series of months and years you were born. For example June 1987 press 1 april 1987 press 2 and so on. I pressed a wrong option that was not my month and year to see what would happen. It transfers you to a operator. So I hung up went through steps 1 and 2 then step 3 chose my actual month and year option. Then it asks for the day you were born. So I went ahead thinking that's all I'll give them. Then it went through to next step.
4. And to my happiness it went on to read the last 5 transactions of my account and wanted to confirm
It was genuine. The automated voice I couldnt hear well so option 1 is to confirm its genuine and option 2 is no or unsure. So I pressed 2 got through to an advisor. He verified me by asking my age next birthday and name of insurance I pay via direct debit. Went through fine and he read out transactions again in greater detail. There's no way a fraudster would know this detail.
I confirmed it was genuine. It was because of my 0.99p ITunes , 0.99p Paypal transactions and £1 airport angels test transaction. And some other inconsistent spending that Barclays spot as fraudulent like spending. Really happy to know they are looking out for me, as claiming back any fraud is one mean fight and all the stress that comes along with it.
Obviously there will be some cautious to call all I'd say is either call Barclays main number on your statement and ask
For fraud dept or call this number but if you feel uneasy being asked questions hang up. Date of birth is where I'd stop and asking direct debit name was comfortable for me. Especially as they already knew my month and year.
Now my card will work and is not blocked.- Caller: Barclays
- A.T.This is Barclay's fraud department they called me as I had made a large purchase from a shop I wouldn't usually go to... the stopped my card from working until I called this number to verify it was me who made the purchase.
If I was you I would answer or call them back - just to protect your money- Caller: Barclays Fraud Dept
- KroesisNot the best way to reassure customers (probably cost effective) but genuine call from Adeptra on behalf of Barclays' fraud dept to confirm recent purchases. All items read out on mine were genuine, they asked for no info other than for me to choose my birth year and month from a selection of 4 and to confirm the day. If they'd have asked for more info I would have been suspicious.
If in doubt call Barclays back yourself. If it's for another person/new phone/don't have an acct with Barclays doesn't mean it's a scam, just means the person they were calling hasn't updated their phone no.- Caller: Adeptra - On behalf of Barclays

- kenRECEIVED A CALL 04-10-12 FROM A OERSON CLAIMING TO BE A FRAUD INVESTIGATION TEAM ASKING FOR A NAME THAT DOES NOT RESIDE HERE.If I was the person press 1 if not the named press 5

- Kena MehtaI received call from this no. i want to identify who and why is calling me.
- TomJust had a call from this number. It is Barclays (or the service that provides their Fraud Prevention). Same pattern as others... verify your DOB, then check the last 5 transactions and verify if they're genuine.
A tip to others – you can check Barclays' genuine numbers here: http://www.barclays.co.uk/ContactUs/FraudPreventionService/P1242604053440
Enter the number you got the call from and it will tell you if it's legitimate. It also tells you a bit more about the fraud prevention service.- Caller: Barclays Fraud Prevention Service
- RoflcoptersYou do get some tools commenting on here trying to claim this is a scam. This is a genuine number. It is not great because the number does not appear on the Barclaycard website. However, I called the fraud line on the Barclaycard website who confirmed it is the correct number to call.
If in doubt simply call the generic barclaycard number who will confirm for you that this number is correct.
It is a good thing I called it because they stopped my account being used for 1k of purchases I had not made.
Why people would want to convince others this is a scam is beyond me, they must lead rather sad lives.- Caller: Barclays
- DaveI would not answer there questions and when I called Barclays they said it was not from them???
