If it wasn't an 0845 number I'd call them back to give my readings.

But I'm on a tariff that gives free landline calls and I get a recorded message about the call being routed through a call-charging service & I'll have to pay for the call.

the message asking me to call them was left on my answering phone.

It seems really dodgy, "on behalf of your supplier", there's no way i'm ringing this number back, or using there website, it just feels really dodgy and like a scam.

they've called me twice in the past week or so on my mobile, saying they're calling on behalf of npower (my supplier), wanting my elec/gas readings. i've told them i gave npower my readings a couple of weeks ago, but they say they need the readings anyway. haven't given them as they call when i'm at work. seems odd to me.

Called and left a voicemail today saying they were calling on behalf of my electricity supplier, asking me to call 08467 023461 or go to myreading.net and enter my details.  Spoke to my electricity supplier, they say they don't use this company and they don't ring asking for meter readings.  looks like a scam.

I got a call from this number from NPower for my meter reading.  Someone had dropped a card at my home to call the same number, so I guess it is genuine.

Left a message saying they were calling on behalf of "my electricity supplier" and asked to call them back or leave the reading at http://myreading.net/.
I'll be contacting npower (my provider) for explanations.

I have had two of these computer-generated messages left for me over the past week. Since there's no way I'm handing over my name, postcode, house number and utility readings to any scammer who happens to get my number, I haven't called back.  Instead I rang my supplier [Utility Warehouse] who helpfully explained that they and some other utilities use Lowribeck to read meters in particular localities.
I have suggested that Utility Warehouse give all their customers this info with their next bill to avoid this unnecessary concern.

So if in doubt call your utility to check. Whilst you are talking to your utility, you can also give them your readings at the same time, thus avoiding Lowribeck altogether..

If npower say they "use Lowribeck to read meters" I suggest that Lowribeck should do just that rather than just ringing us all up so that we have to do the work on their behalf or pay for unnecessary phone calls.  Having said that, the last time they read the electricity after we hadn't responded to phone calls, they left the door on the meter cupboard unlocked, swinging in the wind and open to the weather.  Good thing we hadn't gone away...  It would be nice if people could do their jobs properly.

I had a call on my mobile from this number and they left a message saying they were calling on behalf of my electricity supplier but they said the wrong supplier name so I hung up before it finished. Sounds like a scam to me but who knows?

Even if this was a legitimate enquiry I don't appreciate being called on my mobile by a third party company. It has happened to me before where people have taken my details and then used them to switch my supplier without my consent.

The card was left when I was on holiday. The electricity meter is behind closed doors, and therefore only visible when we're at home- as compared to the gas meter- previously B Gas and EDF (Who never did a reading, and presented estimates for about 3 years) which is openable with the special key, a pair of pliers and even a pocket knife and is situated on the outside wall. I have dealt with Lowri Beck before and was willing to do it again. But the doubt spread by these columns have made me change my mind- especially the "cheating" 08457 number discussion.
Do I wait for a revisit?
Do I wait for an estimate, that might be wildly disparate, thus making it essential to ring the number with the meter reading in order to save cash (Old style contrick).
Do I do nothing and posibly suffer more?
The main Lowri Beck website seems utterly genuine, but then----------!!!

Automated message left on my phone this morning asking me to submit a reading via the phone number or on the myreading.net website. I too was suspicious as they didn't tell me which supplier wanted the info. Having looked at these comments I probably won't contact Lowri Beck either but rather my supplier direct.

Message left on my answer machine yesterday (07/11/08) asking for meter readings.  Odd because I provided readings (online) just a few weeks ago.  I shan't return the call but will use Southern's online facility to provide updated readings.

Lowri Beck is a genuine meter reading company. How do I know? I work for them. We do readings not only for Npow but also for Southern Electric, Utility Warehouse, OPUS, E4B and now some jobs for EDF. You don't have to ring the number to submit your readings but submit it yourself online via your suppliers website. Hopes that eases some of your concerns.
