I received a cold call on my answering machine saying they were calling "on behalf of your gas supplier" but did not name the supplier - that's suspicious. The call asked my to phone 08457 023461 and give some information.

It also mentioned a web site www.myreading.net

I checked with British Gas, my gas supplier. This IS a scam. It's probably a sales trick - they will then try to get you to switch to another supplier. It could be even worse - I advise not to visit the website as you might get your computer hacked.

Never trust cold calls unless they give very specific information indicating it is from who it says. Never call the numbers given on cold calls either - call the number on your bill.

This is a genuine meter reading company.They normally call to get your final readings before you switch to your new supplier.

Our answerphone took a call on Monday from these people, asking for our electricity and gas readings. I was puzzled by this because I sent the readings to the Utility Warehouse, via their website, on 31st December, and it was acknowledged.

However, I sent the readings again yesterday, and at 16:59 this afternoon there came another call from 08457023461, asking me for the readings! I told the person on the other end that I found this all highly suspicious, and that I was going to contact the Utility Warehouse, to find out what was going on.

The lady on the Utility Warehouse helpline said she had no knowledge of these calls, but confirmed that she could see my readings for 31st December, and yesterday. She advised me to hang up if I receive any calls of this nature in future. However, having since found this website, I've come to the conclusion that the Utility Warehouse must be aware of the activities of this company. I am now seeking urgent clarification from them as to the status of our electricity and gas supplier.

call came out of the blue with very bad communication skills. had to play recording 3 times to make any sense of call. did not recognize the calling company,or the reason why the call in the first place

These people really annoy me calling my mobile then merely leaving me with a recorded announcement. If they're supposeed to be reading my meter on behalf of the Gas/Elec co, they should do just that and send someone to read it. At the prices we're charged now I've no intention of doing their work for them.

Had a message left on my phone from this compnay asking for a meter reading. I have a prepay key system!!! WTF

It is LowryBeck. They left a card. If they can only be bothered to call at my house once when I'm at work then I'm not ringing them. Have submitted reading direct to utility company on utility company website.

Not a call but I received a letter regarding changing the meter 'on behalf of your energy supplier'. I have never seen such an unprofessional de-personalised missive. Looks like it came straight from Nigeria looking for $2 million dollars! No company address or phone number etc etc. If my supplier IS using them (and sadly, they probably are) then they should demand a better approach. I will certainly not be opening the door to anyone from Lowri Beck until or unless I get written instruction from my supplier.

This call IS a scam.  I haven't been named on a gas or electricity bill for over 5 years now.  DO NOT trust them!

I too had a call yesterday.  But the account numbers were totally wrong, and they said Southern Electric who don't, and never have, supply me.  I phoned them back today, and they seem confused and will put 'a note on the system'.  I don't know whether they have been forwarded the wrong info or what....

rang twice requesting a gas meter reading and asking for my personal details.Sounded suspicious so as I had already give my meter reading to my supplier four days before so declined.

I've had two cards through my door from my gas and electricity supplier who had tried to visit to read the meter.  Now I've had this call, so I would assume from the above comments that it is genuine.  Either that or a HUGE coincidence!

This company just phoned me too. But BOTH meters were read by a guy with ID two weeks ago. So, I am not calling them back. This has happened several times.

A call was left by Lowri Beck on my answer machine yesterday. I looked up their website and was perturbed by comments left by other callers.
I telephoned npower direct to ask who Lowri Beck were? I was informed that they were a company that npower use to collect metre readings for them.
Whilst I was on the telephone to npower they took both my Gas and Electric metre readings for me and confirmed that a new bill relating to both of my readings would be forwarded to me within a week to 10 days.

I didnt answer the call and if it is to do with my gas supplier, my company dont have my mobile number so its a fake, has nothing to do with my actual company at all

lowri beck isnt a scam.
Fact number one they dont even work for british gas (so probably that phone call was a scam)
they work for. npower, edf,opus, scotish and southern energy (formally Atlantic) and utilitiy warehouse.
they dont take the readings for billing purposes and have no account numbers or anything like that on the systems.
They just have a record of previous reads, meter serial numbers, addresses and phone numbers ALL SUPPLIED BY YOUR COMPANYS.

Lowri Beck are a genuine meter reading company. I also work for them. We are an Independent and work for several suppliers Npower, Scottish Power, Southern Electric, Utility Warehouse, OPUS, EDF, National Grid etc. 08457023461 is our data centre based in Wigan, it is not a scam it's just an annual/bi-annual meter reading; you will have been visited by a Lowri Beck meter reader probably twice unsuccessfully, they will leave a card; if you do not contact them they will try to contact you for a reading; leaving an answering machine message. If call charges concern you online submissions can be left on http://myreading.net/ I have worked for this company for 10 years now. Sorry to disappoint and sorry if we aren't as well know as other meter reading companies, but it's NOT a scam.

What amuses me about these numpties is claiming they were calling on behalf of "gas supplier".  I don't have gas!

I received a call from these people on my answer machine.  Loweribeck was the company and the website was myreading.net.  I tend to not trust what I see as a cold call!  So...all I did was go to my gas & elec supplier and left the meter reading on their website!
