Yeah I got the voicemail same as everyone else - but I'm not named on the gas and electric bills for our property so I don't trust it - also it sounded as if the person was calling from the side of a busy road! Very odd... shan't be responding or visiting their website!

We recieved a telephone call at 3.33pm on Thursday 13 August 2009 from telephone number 0845 7023461 claiming to represent our electricity supplier and requesting we give details. As call opened a name of calling company was given, but it was so quick as not to be able to hear. Call sounded as though it was taped, but done very poorly.

Got a call from these zeebs around 6pm yesterday - apparently they were "unable to take a reading".

The meter is at the front of the house.
    A brighter-than-average 10-year-old could open
the door with pliers (it's got a triangular lock).

So: either Derren Brown made my street vanish while I was at work one day, or these meter readers are such utter numpties as to be unable to open a door
conveniently situated outside the house and take a reading. And, having been flummoxed by the technical wizardry of a lock they should have a key for anyway, they must've been too tired to write out a card.

Well, either that or they're cost-cutting by not bothering to send anyone round the houses and are just calling instead.

I shall be having words with my supplier about subcontracting to fools...

Called me this evening to ask me for a meter reading, however they did not know my proper name or my currnet supllier. I refused to give them any imformation. Be aware that there is a company who want to change your meter for you free of charge, but there is a sting in the tail. You will end up paying a very high rate for Electricity or Gas.

    What Scam??
Lowri beck IS a genuine Meter reading company!
They do ring customers of energy companies up asking for meter readings if they are unable to get to their property or there has been a problem in getting the meter reading.
Atlantic (Scottish and Southern Electric), NPower, EDF,Utility Warehouse, all the major energy companies hire Lowri Beck to do the meter readings for the customers
Hence the phone call saying "We are calling on BEHALF of (X) for your meter reading"
Lowri Beck has been in contact with all the major energy companies too many times with complain about the employees telling customers that Lowri Beck is a scam. If it's a scam then the large amount of money that's involved in this and the large, successful company that Lowri Beck has become would not exist.

I WORK FOR THE COMPANY - NOT A SCAM.  DOWNLOAD MCAFEE SITE ADVISOR TOOLBAR AND IT WILL SHOW THAT THE WEBSITE CAN BE TRUSTED,  NOT MANY SUPPLIERS ACTUALLY HAVE THEIR OWN METER READERS SO THEY SUB CONTRACT COMPANIES LIKE LOWRI BECK / ACCUREAD / METER SERVICES TO DO IT FOR THEM,

THEY READ FOR N,POWER / UTILITIES WAREHOUSE, OPUS ENERGY, ECT...

This number called me and asked for a meter reading. I was suspicious as my gas and electric readings had been sent in over the internet only 11 days earlier. I told them I would call back. In the meantime I called n-power who confirmed the call was genuine and made by a company on their behalf and that is was being asked for as a new bill was due in a few days time. I would have thought n-power could estimate that from the recent figure sent to them.

Just received a call from them but I'll never answer it.   If it is for a meter reading then I'll just go online to my provider and leave it.  Haven't they heard of email.....

This company might be a bona fide meter reading company but don't appear to want to actually read meters leaving it for the user to do it for them.

they are in fact a GENUINE company! they call on behalf of your utility supplier when a meter reading operative for one reason or another hasnt been able to obtain the meter reading themselves. i have used their webisite and have NOT been hacked! i have also recieved calls and given my reading over the phone! the firts time they contacted me i was suspicious and spoke to a supervisor at from my utility suplier and they confirmed that it was a legitimate company they had used for over 9 years!
So before you start slagging off a company that is doing you a favour and giving their staff abuse i suggest you get your facts right before posting nonsense on websites you ignorant morons!
Lowri Beck is a Genuine and Trustworthy Company

I work for lowri beck services we are not a scam we dont leave specific information as to which company you are with as we work on behalf of many companies and we leave a universal message.

For prepaid meters we still need to make sure you meter is not using up your credit unfairly.

We are a ligitimate company. half the time customers dont know who their with and think were lying or dont realise their company is called different names such as telecom plus is also utility wearhouse and just put the phone down.

If you give us a chance to explain to you what we do and who we are you will see that your companies actually supply us with your meter serial numbers as clarification of who we are and that we do work for your company.

    The End

I can confirm for all those people that think lowri beck is not a legitimate company it IS!
how do i know i work for them!!
and do you know how annoying it is when we get people being abusive or putting the phone down!?
if you would just let us explain why we are calling on "behalf" of your gas/elec suppplier maybe you would realise we are the one's doing you the favour.
we work on behalf of a lot of companies such as N Power and utility warehouse and are not just 'after your money' as some customers claim...
after all what can we do with a meter reading, rob you of your bank account, didnt think sooo!
so next time you get a call of us just answer the phone let us explain and go and get your readings,
life will be much simpler for all of us

I'm sure they're perfectly genuine (I'm with Npower so the comments above confirmed it) but I have just had a card through the door from them despite being in... might be an idea to *knock* on the door (it's a small house, I would have heard it), then they can come in and read the meter (which is just inside the door) rather than get me to do it.

    Jason again
Incidentally, I can confirm it is NOT a scam as the card has my meter serial number - who else would know that? I know you've got to be careful these days but there's a fine line between caution and paranoia.

I’ve had two landline calls from 0845 7023461 in the past three days who claim to be calling on behalf of Npower. Asking for my gas & electricity readings, when I queried why they were calling a second time there was a pause followed by “Oh it’s ok the last person didn’t log in the details correctly” I refused to give them information advising them of my visual impairment and nobody was around to read them for me. He was quite persistent but didn’t get what he wanted. They may call again and ask me to confirm my address. D.O.B, e-mail, etc, who knows?
I contacted Npower who said they would never call and ask for the readings and had an instant record of my call to them ten days ago with the readings and my vision problem. Never give out your personal details to any caller on the phone or in person at your doorstep and don’t let them in. Call your supplier and ask if they had requested this information first. False I.D. cards with a photo are simple to make. Don’t be fooled by a piece of plastic on a lapel. I didn’t give the first caller any information either!!!

I had a message on my answering maching from these. The message was a woman talking to someone else (possibly on her mobile phone). I assume she didn't realise her call to me had connected. So I had about 4 minutes of her personal conversation to her friend.

Lowri Beck who take meter readings on behalf of NPower are a legitimate company. Many of the submissions I've read clearly aren't aware of the options available to leave readings either over the phone, or using the messagwe left on the answerphone, via the WEB.... particularly those who work during the day and are rarely at home!
Anybody who has any doubts about this, or any unidentified calls or emails can simply type the number or web address into Google (or other search engine) leave a space then type SCAM and get a plethora of information from public spirited people who have the technology and experience to allay the fears of the technophobic.

Got a card through my letter box stating that someone had called to read my electricity meter but that I was out. Well, I wasn't out, I was in all day but never heard the doorbell ring. The card said to ring 08457 023461 or submit my own reading at www.myreading.net.

I just tore up the card and burnt it. It was an obvious scam as nobody rang my doorbell. And the card had the NPOWER logo on it and they are renowned nationwide for being total [***].
