I get about 1 call every 2 weeks from these people (Lowri Beck). They're "calling on behalf" of my electricity supplier. Except I don't have an electricity supplier - I live on a yacht.

I've added their number to my mobile phone's block list, so they can't bother me any more.

    Hello,

I've read through a lot of these message. I've had a callfrom Lowri Beck whilst I was out.

Apparently I need to call them them to leave a reading or update their website. Only npower directly asked me within the last couple of weeks via email to do this, which I did through the npower website.

So why is my time being wasted? I don't like to be contacted for no reason. I would sort of understand if an appointment was required or I hadn't recently given a reading, but I have given a reading and no mention of an appointment.

If I get hassled for no reason at all, I might decide to move my business elsewhere. Plus their message sounded automated. In these tough times, people should be looking to keep customers, no push them away.

    Shame.

Having read quite a few of the posts regarding Lowri Beck (LB) with a smirk on my face, I cannot believe  so many, who take the time and effort to moan online about a genuine support service, can't be bothered to use their search engines and do a little research to be better informed!  A few things I'd like to comment about................

    1.  Scam company!!  LB provides employment for approximately 1000 people, is solely UK based with it's main offices located in Wigan, has a uniformed field workforce (condition of Operators Licence) which have all undergone a CRB check and carry ID that can be verified.  Ok, it may not be something to shout about (considering their recent form and table position) but the company also provides sponsorship for Wigan Athletic Football Club - look on the advertising boards to the right of one of the goal positions the next time you watch MOTD.  The number of suppliers they read meters for is constantly changing, but does include NPower.

    2.  The telephone calls!!  Firstly, the number you get called on is normally the number YOU have provided to your supplier, so it should come as no surprise that this will be the number they will try to contact you on.  Why do they call you when you have submitted your reads (online, carrier pigeon, telepathy etc)?  Simple, your read has gone to the supplier and not to LB, who will have been contracted to obtain the reads on their behalf.  Why do they call in the evenings?  Like many of you, they are at work when you are.  However, in an effort to cope with the ever-changing way in which we lead our lives, they also have staff that start and work later.  Finally, just because a number starts with 0845 does not automatically make it a premium rate number.

    3.  The Meter Reader......  These dedicated individuals go out in all weather to do exactly what most of the working population of this country do - earn a living to pay bills and put food on the table.  In general the customer they come across is pleasant and respectful of what they are trying to achieve.  However, some do see them as an 'easy' target and they (the meter reader) often subjected to verbal and physical abuse, including having dogs (which are naturally protective of their own environment) set upon them - none of the previous practices are acceptable but some think it's ok to have a go!!  For those of you that think it's just a case of them reading a few numbers, think again - in today's society, where there are many elderly, infirm and vulnerable living in the community, they may potentially be the only social contact for that person.

    4.  The 'No' Knock!!  Many comments have been made about the meter reader not knocking on the door and just posting a card.  I doubt very much that this is the case as they do not receive any payment for just posting a no access card - they may do in other companies but not in LB.

I'm sure there are many other posts that can be commented on, but these appear to be the main threads.

The more astute amongst you will have noted that I appear to know a fair amount about the subject, that's because I am one of those individuals who goes out in all weather, knocks / rings on your door and obtain reads in an effort to provide you with more accurate billing.  I've taken your abuse and stood there whilst you have complained about the service your suppler is providing, have attended A&E with dog bites and have waited in the pouring rain, after you've opened the door, whilst you finish watching CBBC / ordering every item the Argos catalogue!!!!!!  Additionally, I've taken the rubbish out for the disabled, reported crimes and called for an ambulance after an elderly customer had sustained a head injury following a fall down the stairs.

Why do I do it, why do I work for LB? Well, the money is definitely not the reason...... I do it because I enjoy the job & work for a company that, despite the negative trait of these forums from the ill-informed, does provide excellent service,

PS:  A Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from all at Lowri Beck

We're all perfectly happy to see a meter reader at the door - It's the phone calls I object to!

If they have people knocking on doors then why phone?

0845 numbers are indeed always premium rate numbers- that's why it is 0845!

This company rang me up this morning and left me an answer phone message that I couldnt even hear half of. I am a student and I can't even give them the meter readings right now, as I don't go back to university for another week. If they want the reading, they can come round to the house and take it- I think 0845 numbers in themselves are a scam and I don't have the money on my mobile to be calling them up.

They may well be genuine, but it seems as though if they want to be more trustworthy then they are seriously going to have to rethink their communication skills.

Someone ought to pull the plug on these threads..... whinge, whinge, sodding whinge!!!  Moan when the meter reader calls, moan when they don't, moan when the company's working on behalf of your suppliers call and moan even more when your bill is estimated because you don't answer the door to the meter readers!!!!!!!!

The simple fact of the matter is that it is the suppliers that contract meter reading companies and they are fulfilling that contract obligation, whether it be by calling at your door or calling you on the phone.

I have spoken with this company, the call centre staff were polite and friendly, even calling me back at my request when I asked if it was a premium rate number (which I was assured it isn't).  I explained that I would prefer to have my meters read by a meter reader and, after confirming my details, have removed me from their calling list.

Can't believe this company... just received a call asking me to provide an electricity meter reading by phone.  The very same company replaced the meter yesterday (new one starting at 0).  Adding to the frustration, I provide meter readings online the day I'm requested to by my provider.

Hopefully some people can join me in raising a formal complaint to npower over using a company who make repeated calls at unsocial hours and are apparently incapable of any coodination between departments.

I missed a call off this number today and they left a message saying they was calling on behalf of npower and I am on Eon and I have also only just changed to a new phone number and they don't know my new number I have only had it 1 day so I personally think this is a scam so try not give these people any information.

So I just got a call from this number and so glad I read this thread. I have just been called by them and they left a voicemail saying it's Lowri Beck on behalf of NPower asking me to call them back or submit the reading on THEIR website! I will only submit it on the NPower one now after reading this thread.

Mr D - You can lodge a complaint via the OfGem website I believe and they will take it very seriously and also pass it on to NPower. If enough people complain one of the guilty companies will receive a fine no doubt

hi john, the company is actually genuine, npower have asked them to phone, email, and send readers, but they do it in the order, they should send the reader first, as the job has a completion date on it, so it continues to circulate through the system, even if you have given a read over the phone, the meter reader will usually be at your property within a week, i always say to people to say it's not a good time, and also people are employed to take the reads, but the company are genuine. Npower do supply all the contact details to lowri beck ltd, so for npower to say they know nothing is just passing the buck, hope this has shed some light, but the calling is a pain in the axxx, they called me at 8pm, after settleing my 6 yr old autistic son, and promptly woke him, and yes i do read the meters for them, so they do have people.
    cheers john
